PE & Sport

PE (Physical Education) & Sport

The Physical Education and Sport program at Oakleigh South Primary School encompasses fitness, skills, movement, dance, games, aquatics, recreation and sport. It aims to develop resilience, relationships and respect in all children.

Swimming Intensive Program

Preps – Year 5 are involved in a 2 week intensive learn to swim program once during the school year.

Clinics

A variety of clinics are arranged throughout the year for many year levels as offered by sporting organisations such as the AusKick, Milo Cricket, Hookin2Hockey etc

Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)

In addition to PE, we run a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) which is experienced during the prep year. The program aims to develop children’s balance, fitness, hand-eye co-ordination, motor skills and understanding of concepts (e.g. on, in, through, under etc.) It involves activities such as rolling, crawling, bouncing, throwing, balancing, climbing, eye-tracking and obstacle courses.  PMP enhances brain development by stimulating the senses through movement and young students who possess adequate perceptual-motor skills enjoy better coordination, greater body awareness, stronger intellectual skills and a more positive self-image.

Prep, Year 1 & Year 2 PE

The focus of physical education in prep, year 1 and year 2 is to develop the children’s fundamental motor skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, kicking, ball bouncing, etc. The skills are taught by way of direct modelling as well as through minor games.

Year 3 & Year 4 PE

The focus of physical education in years 3 and 4 is to continue developing these motor skills through major games and the rules of the games. These games are netball, basketball, football, soccer, flag rugby, softball, rounders, volleyball, sofcrosse and cricket.

Year 5 & Year 6 Sport

The focus in year 5 and 6 is summer and winter inter school sports. All children in years 5 & 6 participate in sport on a Thursday morning for Summer (Term 1) and Winter afternoon (Term 2). OSPS offer Inter School Sport (competing against other schools in a home and away fixture) and Intra Club Sport (competing against other OSPS teams). Inter School teams are selected via a trial process which is held during lunch times. Teachers coach each team. Intra school teams are selected to ensure an enjoyable and even competition, so that all children can develop their fitness and skill. Please note that all children will have had exposure to these sports via the PE program in years 3 and 4.
