On Tuesday the 30th of October, Oakleigh South travelled to Duncan McKinnon Reserve, for what turned out to be a fiercely competitive day of Rugby League. We had three teams compete on the day: the Year 5 boys, Year 6 boys and a Year 5/6 girls’ team. The day started with an informative training session by the ever so helpful Melbourne Storm staff, who trained and umpired the students on the day. Following, was four pool games and a final if we were successful.

Year 6 Boys

The Year 6 boys had a day full of competitive and tense matches. Throughout the day, we won two games, drew one and lost one by one try. These results saw Oakleigh South stumble into the final by a solitary one try difference ahead of St. Peter’s. The final saw OSPS come up against a dominant and undefeated St. Paul’s.

The final was played with fantastic spirit and with four minutes left it looked like it would be one for the ages. Unfortunately, injuries to our Captain, Dylan, and our wall in defence, Ben, saw St. Paul’s run in what turned out to be the winning try. As time expired, Ollie threw an amazing 20-metre ball to Ricky, who was held up right on the line, in a play which could easily have drawn the game and taken it into overtime.

Congratulations to all the Year 6 boys who competed on the day, they put in an incredible team effort in all matches.

Year 5 Boys

The Year 5 boys were absolutely brilliant on the day. Not many had played before and they only had one week training together. In the first two matches OSPS looked absolutely unstoppable with Ethan, Daniel and Aadam (Year 4) running rings around the opposition. Unfortunately, as the day went on we started to tire and lost our last two games to just miss out on the finals.

It was a fantastic display by the boys and a great experience to have for when they play in Year 5.

Year 5/6 Girls

The girls performed magnificently on the field. It was our first girls tackle rugby team in a number of years and they had only trained twice before the Gala Day.

It was wonderful to see them all trying something new and giving their all for our school. It was a tough day for the girls, but they were ecstatic to come away from the day with one victory. Well done girls.
