PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we are nearing the end of the term, there is growing excitement amongst the year 6 level. Soon they will begin to move into their new classrooms. The classrooms are spectacular, and we can’t wait to have our year 6 students enjoying their new space.

This means there will be lots of movement in the administration area. This area is going to be relocated to the car park end of the year 5 building. More information regarding this will be sent out soon.

Once again, the OSPS parent group are organising the annual Easter raffle. We are asking all families to donate easter eggs, characters, big and small and drop them off at the office. The parent group will be collecting eggs up until next Monday. All prizes will be announced at the final assembly on Thursday 6th April.

Preparations are well underway for the upcoming Autumn Fete. There is great excitement amongst the children as for many of them, they have not experience an OSPS fete! The wristbands for the carnival rides are a great way to save money on the day and will keep the children occupied as well as having heaps of fun. SCHOOL MATTERS

OSPS EASTER RAFFLE

Tickets for our Easter Raffle are now on sale, at a cost of $3 for 5 ticket. Please check your Compass for ticket sale details.

For this raffle to be successful, we are asking families to donate eggs or chocolates (please donate eggs or chocolates that are nut free. Eggs or chocolate where the packaging says ‘may contain traces of nuts’ is fine to donate.) These donations will make up our prizes.

Please bring any donations to the office on or before 3 April 2023. Winners will be announced on 6 April 2023, at our final assembly.

There were 130 winners drawn at our last raffle, it would be amazing if this year’s raffle was even bigger!!

ROTARY COMMUNITY RAFFLE

We are so excited to be bringing back the Rotary Community Raffle 2022—2023 to the OSPS community along side our Autumn Family Fete fundraising where the first prize is a HONDA CR-V VI SUV valued at $35,000 and second prize a $1000 Bunnings Voucher.

Families have received raffle books of 10 tickets to sell at $2 each!

Tickets will be on sale and are due back at the office until Wednesday 5th April, before the Easter school holidays.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

The Victorian Government offer a Sports, Camps and Excursions Fund for families who hold a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A special consideration category also exists.

A payment of $125 for eligible primary school students and $225 for eligible secondary school students will be paid directly to the school to be used toward camps, sports and excursion costs for the student’s benefit.

CSEF payments to schools will commence from 1 March onwards. Schools are able to continue processing applications until the end of Term 2.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT IN YEAR 6

Students at Oakleigh South Primary School have been enrolled in The Resilience Project for 2023, and Term 1 has seen them learning about the key foundations of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness in weekly classroom lessons.

Our senior students have been challenged weekly to notice moments of gratitude – or ‘Dis moments; understand the idea of ‘walking in someone else’s shoes’, and learning how to manage their emotional responses to challenging situations.

We encourage parents to ask their children what they have learned from The Resilience Project each week, and ask questions such as: ‘what is a ‘Dis moment?

Can you tell me about a ‘Dis moment you’ve had this week? What kind of emotions did you feel today? How did you know? Why do you think you felt this way? Have you done something helpful or kind today for someone?

YEAR 6 GEM

G – In Year 6, we are grateful for the beautiful new classrooms we are about to move into.

E –  We have empathy for our friends who miss their families living overseas.

M – Focusing on our breathing and being aware of our senses can help calm our minds and bodies before tackling scary moments like auditioning for the Year 6 production.

LITERACY CORNER

YEAR 6 LITERACY CORNER

Literacy Corner

As part of their literacy program, the Year 6 students have been learning how to write an in-depth, engaging character description. Earlier this term, this learning was linked with the students’ immersion in the Year 6 Production: The Wizard of Oz. The students were asked to write a character description for one of their favourite characters, and the results were captivating:

Dorothy

Her autumn pigtails flowed over her shoulders, as the divine blue ribbons finished her hair. Glistening blue eyes matched her soft baby pink lips. The checkered blue dress she wore matched her shimmering ruby red heels.

The way she talked indicated she was gentle, mature and humble. She was courageous enough to continue the unique journey to find Oz after getting blown in from Kansas in a tumultuous storm. She was very social, as she made many friends along the way. Her only goal was to go back home, to her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.

YEAR 6 INTER SCHOOL SPORT

Unfortunately our final round of Year 6 sport was cancelled due to the extreme weather.

Therefore there are no results. Tomorrow most of our Year 6 interschool sport teams will participate in Summer Finals. we wish them all the best.

CAMP AUSTRALIA

Camp Australia use the OSPS facilities to deliver before and after school care to families. They also offer care on curriculum days and school holidays.

The building is situated adjacent to the staff car park and they have access to our junior school playground and junior oval for outside play.

PARENT CORNER

You can help your child to improve their sleep by:

· establishing a regular sleep pattern and consistent bedtime routine

· supporting them to avoid using electronic devices such as smartphones before going to bed and in bed

· encouraging your child to exercise and spend time outside in daylight, steering clear of vigorous activity in the hour before sleep

· encouraging them to wind down and relax before going to bed.

If your child is still having trouble sleeping, has persistent problems with low mood, excessive daytime sleepiness, restlessness in bed, severe snoring or wakening unrefreshed, despite getting adequate length sleep, they should see a doctor.
