PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Yesterday we celebrated Harmony Day in style with the students coming to school dressed in their traditional outfits of their country or dressed in the colour orange. The whole school assembly was alive with colour and spectacular traditional outfits. A big thank you to the children who performed on the stage, you were wonderful!! Thank you also to Miss Paroukas for coordinating the performances. It was a very special day to show pride for your culture and to show support for cultural diversity and inclusiveness in our school.
Last Tuesday the year one children welcomed their grandparents and special friends into their classrooms to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. Everyone joined in activities before heading to the hall where they sang some songs, led by Mrs Barnard. Then it was time to join their grandparents for a bite to eat, which was kindly put on by the parent group. Thank you to the staff and parent group for organising this very special day on the school calendar.
NAPLAN testing is continuing this week. The students have done a wonderful job. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, the children completed their Numeracy tests. For any students who have missed any of the tests, there will be catch up tests offered on Friday and Monday.
The OSPS Running Club is in full swing with a large group of enthusiastic children going through their training drills preparing for House Cross Country on Thursday 18th April. Training is held on Tuesday mornings and Friday lunchtimes. Thank you to the staff who are training these children twice a week.
Have a great week everyone.

RESILIENCE PROJECT
YEAR 4 GEM
The Year 4s began the year focussing on the school values and creating classroom contracts together. Our students have been wonderful at displaying the OSPS values of Excellence, Working Together, Resilience, Integrity and Respect in the classroom. During our wellbeing lessons, we have been using our Resilience Project books with a particular emphasis on EMPATHY to help us with our writing project for our Prep buddies.
I can define what empathy means.
I can provide examples of ways people show empathy.
I can explain how showing empathy is important in everyday life.
I can provide an example of when I showed empathy.
Maybe take some time out as a family to watch this VIDEO on Empathy, and discuss why it is important to understand what empathy is and practise it in our daily lives.
STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 4 SHOWCASE
This term, the Year 4s have been very excited to meet their Prep Buddies. We have had the chance to have lunch with them, read and even play some games.
Every year, the Year 4s create picture story books that are personalised and meaningful for their buddies. To begin with, we reflect on our own experiences of starting school and use the Design Thinking Process to make these special books. These are the steps the Year 4s followed to create our picture story books.
Empathise – We try to remember and reflect on what it was like to be a prep starting school.
Define – We interviewed our prep buddies. What problems may a prep have around the school or with starting school? What would we have liked to know about the school? Did we need help finding our way around the school?
Ideate – Brainstorm lots of different ideas of what our picture story books may be about. What school value/moral could we choose to write about? Crazy ideas are welcome!
Prototype – We wrote out our plans and drafted our picture story books.
Test – We will read our picture story books to our buddies. We hope they enjoy them!
YEAR 4 LITERACY CORNER
The Year 4s have been working on recounts and narratives this term.
We have been exploring the differences between the two genres. We have been making sure our recounts include retelling events in the order in which they happened (chronological order) and are written to retell events with the purpose of either informing or entertaining their audience (or both).
We chose our favourite nursery rhymes and turned them into creative newspaper reports (a type of recount).
A Boy’s Luck of Survival
Yesterday, at 3:30pm, a boy named Jack (aged 8) and his twin sister (aged 8) fell down a big hill and had a terrible landing.
A witness reported that the children were fighting about who was carrying the bucket full of water back down to the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately, Jack tripped over a rock and tumbled down the hill. He landed roughly on the grass with the bucket falling onto his head making him soaking wet. He is expected to make a full recovery.
For further information, please scan the QR code and make a donation to help Jack and his twin sister.

ART SHOWCASE
The Art Room has been a buzz so far this term with the Year Six students starting with giant Frozen Junior posters and ink-blowing work, which will feature in the foyer for their production. “Frozen” inspired designs coincide with much of this year’s artwork to match the Year 6 production and the school’s Art Exhibition at the end of Term 3. The ink has been blown with straws to create unique designs. The students are working independently and revisiting their understandings of tone and blending, using colour pencils and cross-hatching techniques to create their artwork. The Year 6s are also allowed into the Art Room on a Monday at lunchtime if they wish to work on their artwork outside of class time.
The Year Fives have carefully rendered ‘Still Life Jelly Beans’, using cross-hatching and blending techniques. The children have learnt how to create a 3D effect by colouring things tonally. The Year 5s are invited to come and draw during lunchtime on Tuesdays. They are now working on a colour wheel activity.
Year Four children have been busy with gel pens to create their bookmarks, and are currently having a great time making busy-bee pom poms. It’s taken weeks of wrapping wool so far and they are looking forward to bringing them home next term. This is a school tradition started by Mrs. Orchard many years ago and the children look forward to it each year. Weaving a semi-circle to make a blue rainbow forms the basis of the Year Three textile unit this semester.
The Year Threes and Fours have made good use of the Art Room during our Friday lunchtime ‘Wool Club’, with sessions starting up again this term. It is usually a full house, with many busy hands creating pom-poms and weaving from our donated wool supply.
Chinese lanterns and their important role in Chinese New Year celebrations have been the focus for our Year Twos earlier this year. They have also drawn snowmen, and have now moved onto scratch art or ‘Sgrattito’, as the children like to call it by its proper name. These drawings will be displayed in the Hall Foyer during production later this year.
The Year One children have looked at their understanding of colour after reading ‘The Day the Crayons Quit.’ They have each chosen a colour, and drawn various objects typically associated with that colour. The children created an imaginative work based on the sequel, ‘The Day the Crayons Came Home’. It’s a great activity for students to get to know each other better and communicate their ideas visually. They are currently working on a Tickle Monster activity.
The Prep children have drawn ‘Self-Portraits’, honing their skills to create a special, framed artwork that will be on display at our upcoming Fete. It’s all a big surprise at the moment, but each family will have the opportunity to purchase their children’s little masterpieces from the BR building on the day of the Fete!
Congratulations to our Art Captains this year, Mia, Morgon, Sage, Gayun, Rani and Olive. They have been selected for their interest in The Arts and the proactive way they have assisted in the art room thus far.
A huge congratulations to Justin Charlestio, a former student who has had another success and made it to the finals of the Australian Lester Portraiture Prize, Youth Division, with his portrait of his younger brother Ryan. Good Luck Justin, we are so unbelievably proud of you!
As a side note, can you please ensure your child has a named art smock ready to go for next term. We are sourcing wool donations, particularly blues and white, buttons, ribbons and empty tissue boxes of either size. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
From Miss Hunt and The Art Team
