PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This week has been a hive of activity at OSPS given it has been a 4 day week so far, we’ve hosted 3 principal delegations and provided them with a presentation and tour of the school. Students were particularly delighted when our visitors ventured into their classrooms to tell them about what they were learning and show their work.
The Year 3 and 5 students commenced NAPLAN testing in the robotics room and their classrooms. Thank you to the staff and organisation with the administration of the national testing.
Tuesday and Wednesday, as part of our 4 year school review, the review panel observed lessons, met with staff, students, parents and school leaders for discussion groups. The purpose of the field days is to gather observations and information about how our school operates from the ground up. We have one more final day of the review where the goals will be set for the next 4 years.
Well done to the swimming team who competed in the district swimming carnival and thank you to Marcus M and Melissa L for escorting the students to the venue and supporting them on the day.
Enjoy your week.

Principal

RESILIENCE PROJECT
YEAR 2 GEM
The Year 2 students have jumped straight into the Resilience Project Lessons developing their emotional literacy skills and identifying things that they are grateful for. We have reflected after completing mindfulness activities, identifying how we feel before, during and after these activities.
With the school holidays coming up, we encourage everyone to plan a mindfulness activity with your family! Here’s an example from The Resilience Project:
TRY IT AT HOME FAMILY ACTIVITY: TRP OR PEACE OUT GUIDED RELAXATION
WHAT TO DO:
- Choose a calm, quiet space in your home.
- Open the TRP app and choose a meditation. Alternatively, search ‘Peace Out Guided Relaxation’ on your device.
- There are a range of engaging, guided relaxation and visualisation video clips available on YouTube to listen to and participate in.
- Together as a family, choose one to listen to.
- Afterwards, discuss how you’re all feeling.
Family Mindfulness habit builder:
Download a mindfulness app (The Resilience Project, Smiling Mind, Buddhify and Happy Waves are just a few). Pick a guided relaxation or meditation to complete before bed to relax and unwind or first thing in the morning to start your day mindfully.
STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 2 SHOWCASE
This term in Year 2 we are learning all about living and non-living things, adaptations, habitat and diets through our integrated studies unit ‘Hear Them Roar!’ We have been so excited to learn new facts about dinosaurs, prehistoric animals and paleontologists.
In the last week of term we will be celebrating our knowledge with a special Dinosaur Day. students will become paleontologists as they search for choc chips hidden in cookies and will crack open fossilised dinosaur toys too, to name a few of our activities. Be on the look out for our students dressed as amazing dinosaurs and paleontologists!
Last week, the Year 2 students enjoyed using the special tongs and gloves when joining in The Clean Up Australia Day activity.
What does a dinosaur say when he says awesome? ROARSOME!
– Izzy 2GL
Did you know that T-Rex dinosaurs could be as long as a school bus? T-Rex teeth could also be as big as bananas too!
– Luther 2AP
Introducing our 2024 Year 2 Team
We are so excited to work together to make Year 2 an amazing year for our students!
Amy Philipsen (Team Leader), Tayla McArtney, Mairead Judge, Sarah Rayment, Vanessa O’Connor, Gabriella Lema & Cynthia Dunkley. We also have Austyn Nugent working in 2SR & 2VO throughout the week.
YEAR 2 Literacy Corner
The Year 2 students have been working hard to develop their recount and narrative writing skills.
We have been using a variety of strategies to make our sizzling starts more interesting and exciting and to include more detail in our writing. We have also worked hard to include adjectives, our senses and who, what, where, when and why.
Here is part of Lana from 2CD’s weekend recount…
“Wow! This place is amazing!” On Sunday I went to my Auntie and Uncle’s house I went there with my family because it was my Uncle’s birthday and we were having a BBQ.
First, my Mum drove us to the ginormous, cutest and lovely house. It took about ten minutes to get there.
Next, we sang happy birthday to him and we played.
Last, I helped Nvane water the plants and it took about 30 minutes .
My favourite part was that we sang happy birthday and it made me feel happy.
