PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Planning for our 2023 Autumn Fete is officially underway!! There is already a buzz around the school with lots of talk about the fete and how great it is. At yesterday’s senior assembly the students presented a video where they were asking other students who they would like to see on the Dunk Machine. Let’s just say there will be lots of teachers getting ‘dunked’ on fete day! You will have already received fete newsletter number one, with a fete pack of notices coming home today. We are urging all parents to put their name down to help on the class fete board, it really is a great community day so get involved!

Last Thursday night we welcomed the new Prep families to our school with a wonderful evening of food, entertainment, fun and friendship. The Parent Group put on a fantastic spread of salads and a scrumptious barbecue. The children were entertained by Charlie Silly Pants, whilst the parents chatted and got to know each other. Thank you to the Parent Group for another great event to bring our school community together.

Our wonderful parent group also organised Friday night’s ‘Cinema under the Stars’. It was a beautiful evening enjoyed by lots of families. The children had fun with their ‘glo’ products while watching ‘Puss in Boots’. Another huge thank you to our parent group for a fun event.

Have a great week.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 5 SHOWCASE

Within our unit of study the Year 5 students have been learning all about Natural Disasters and the impact they have to people all around Australia and Asia.

Within this unit of study on ‘Natural Disasters’, the Year 5 students took part in a fun day out of the classroom and went on an excursion to both IMAX and the Melbourne Museum.

Throughout the day, the students visited Australia’s largest cinema screen to see both ‘Volcanoes 3D’ and ‘Extreme Weather’. ‘Volcanoes 3D’ allowed them to discover molten worlds and exploding craters, whilst they journeyed from Pompeii to the recent Kilauea eruption in Hawaii.

In ‘Extreme Weather’, they learnt about the ways in which weather shapes our planet and our way of life.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

GEM AT OSPS

GEM stands for Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.

These are the three of the fours, the fourth being Emotional Literacy, of  the Resilience Project who we are very fortunate to be working with this year to support the Mental Health and Wellbeing of our school community.

The students are able to draw, create, read, design and take time out of their busy day to pay attention when solving puzzles, living in the present moment when partaking in GEM Club activities.

LITERACY CORNER

LITERACY CORNER – YEAR 5

Our Year 5 excursion was the best we’ve ever been to! We went to IMAX to watch two wondrous movies, one about extreme weather and another about volcanoes. We also visited the splendid Melbourne museum, which was very informative and intriguing.

As we piled on the bus and drove to the famous, colossal-screened cinema in the heart of Melbourne City, everyone was buzzing with excitement! When we reached IMAX, we had a very quick snack break before heading into the spectacular theatre. We watched the first movie (that was non-3D) with interest glowing in our eyes. It was all about the mighty natural disasters, such as the melting of glaciers, tornadoes and bushfires. All very dangerous and destructive!

The Year 5 students, all ravenous for lunch, flooded out of the cinema and went to a nearby park to dig into our food. After that, the teachers gave us one hour to play on the close-by playground.

We then saw the second movie (which was 3D) and was all about volcanoes around the world. It was very realistic,as though the bubbling lava was in front of us. There were amazing examples of how destructive volcanoes can be, such as the massive Mount Vesuvius erupting in 79 AD, hiding a whole city in rubble for many centuries. Or Kilauea in Hawaii which last erupted on 5th January this year (2023).

Finally, we went to the Melbourne Museum, where we inspected many attractive gems and minerals. There were also humongous dinosaur fossils and insect bodies covered with gold! The walls and roof were vibrant and fascinating, and all the examples of early life were absolutely crazy!

Overall, the experience was tremendous and very engaging. We feel we can speak for everyone when we say that we will never forget this term’s excursion to IMAX!

The building is situated adjacent to the staff car park and they have access to our junior school playground and junior oval for outside play.

PARENT GROUP – MOVIE NIGHT

After having to cancel last year, it was nice for Parent Group to host a successful movie night last Friday.

We welcomed over 270 people to watch Puss in Boots under the moonlight on the OSPS oval.

Prior to the movie, the hall foyer had a constant stream of movie goers purchasing their snacks and glow products which lit up the oval once the sun had set.

We would like to thank to Mr. Cantlon for his help with the glow products and allowing this event to go ahead.

A huge thank you also needs to be given to our parent volunteers who gave up their time so the event could go ahead.

PARENT GROUP AGM

Parent Group will be holding their annual AGM tonight at 7.30pm.

We invite any interested parties to come, whether it’s to become a general member, nominate for an official position or just to observe what we do.

Next week, (March 15 & 17), all 2nd hand items in the uniform shop (excluding school bags, scarves & beanies) will be reduced to $2.

There will be no holds during the sale. We would also like to remind parents and carers that the uniform shop does not have EFTPOS facilities so you will need cash on the day.
