PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s been a busy week for our Year 2 students as they are in the final stages of preparation for their production of ‘Porridge’ next Tuesday the 26th and Wednesday the 27th of November. The dress rehearsals were fantastic and the whole year level is very excited to perform in front of full houses. Please book your tickets via TryBooking and note the performance is starting at the kid friendly time of 6.30pm and will conclude by 7.30pm.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Year 4 students took part in the Craft Power incursion, where they explored forces and simple machines. The students were guided through hands-on activities centred on forces such as friction, push, and pull. They then had the opportunity to use wood and other materials to build a simple machine. All students had fun during this engaging incursion.

On Monday the Prep swimming program begins for the whole week. This is always a wonderful opportunity for the children to begin to learn to swim or for some, continue to build on their swimming skills. It is also a time where the preps can learn some independence by managing their swim bags, clothing, dressing and travelling on a bus as a group. Thank you in advance to the parent helpers who will be assisting this program.

Also, on Monday our Year 6 students leave for their five-day camp to Hall’s Gap. Looking at the weather forecast, they are definitely going to need their hats and sunscreen as the predicted temperatures are in the high 20’s for the whole week. We wish them a fantastic week full of adventure and friendship, celebrating their primary school years coming to an end. Thank you to all the staff for their organisation of this experience for the students and to everyone who will be assisting at camp for the week.

Have a great weekend,

Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal

UNDERSTANDING ADOLESCENCE

Adolescence is the transitional stage of development that is usually associated with the teenage years. In 2018, the Australian Curriculum Assessment Authority, redefined adolescence as affecting young people aged between 10-24 years. During this time, they experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth which affects how teenagers feel, think, make decisions and interact with the world around them.

During adolescence, a child’s brain can be considered as being “under-construction”. The rate at which this progresses will vary depending on the individual and also their gender. As a result, some parents may view adolescence as stressful or difficult. However, it does not need to be. Setting boundaries, implementing consistent monitoring and maintaining a strong and loving connection will help families adjust during this time.

It is also an important time to keep the communication lines open through clear and age appropriate conversations. Speak openly about changes that they are experiencing and be conscious of their mental health as many of the conditions people confront in adulthood, can begin to manifest in adolescence.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to guide and best support their young person as they transition through adolescence.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 5 SHOWCASE – PENINSULA OUTDOOR CAMP REVIEW

In late October, the Year 5s visited the Mornington Peninsula for an exhilarating three-day camp. The students participated in numerous activities, including surfing, radio rogaine, glider possum, aqua challenge, and many more!

On Wednesday evening, after a scrumptious dinner, we gathered in the hall for a compelling trivia night. The Monkey Squad team claimed victory with an impressive 19 points, while Team Boba secured runner-up with just a one-point difference.

Overall, the Year 5s had a spectacular time at Peninsula Outdoors. We would like to thank our amazing teachers, the camp staff, and our parents for making this year’s camp a truly memorable experience.

LITERACY CORNER

As part of their unit of work on ‘Australia in the 1800s’, The Year 5 Students have spent several weeks studying Ned Kelly and the story of The Kelly Gang. Throughout their notetaking, each student needed to make a decision as to whether they believed Ned Kelly to be a villain or a hero.

Once their point of view was decided, they planned and wrote a persuasive essay, outlining their views, and trying to convince others of their beliefs. Here are some introductions written by some of our students.

Ned Kelly: the man who robbed two banks and killed three police officers. That’s all some people might ever think about – the dangerous criminal who put many lives in danger. Do we ever think about the person behind that mask? A person who only killed in self-defence, wanted his family to thrive and was a good-natured person? Ned’s wonderful but crazy life was an adventure. If only you look underneath the mask of his actions, you’ll see that he was definitely a hero.

- Aashvi 5KP

The iron outlaw and head of the Gretta Mob; this infamous bushranger fought for the poor and stole from the greedy rich. Yes, I’m talking about Ned Kelly. You may see him as a dark character that stole and killed relentlessly, but if you take off Ned Kelly’s helmet, you’ll see the face of a hero that was a victim of unfair judgment.

- Joseph 5LG

Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly. A vile, heartless murderer who killed innocents, stole resources, robbed banks and attempted to derail a train. Why did he do this, you ask? Well, Kelly was fuelled with anger from the police, however, all they had done was treat him a little unfairly. In my opinion, Kelly’s despicable acts were worse than anything the police had done – by a long shot. So sit tight, as I unravel the story behind why Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly was wrongly crowned ‘Legend of Australia’.

- Nikki 5KP

YEAR 5 GEM

GRATITUDE: We are grateful for the groups of students thinking of tactics to win the Trivia night.

EMPATHY: We are empathetic towards the energetic students emitting happy vibes and having a chance to engage with everyone.

MINDFULNESS: We are mindful of the mission to decipher complex trivia questions and quests.

LESSON 24 GRATITUDE WRITING

The Year 5 students had the opportunity to reflect on the people who play an important role in their lives. They brainstormed moments, ideas, and memories that highlighted why they feel grateful for these individuals. This activity encouraged students to think deeply about the positive impact others have had on their personal growth and happiness. Through sharing their reflections, the Year 5s demonstrated their appreciation and the value of meaningful relationships in their lives.

PARENT GROUP

LOST PROPERTY

We currently have a significant number of uniforms in our lost property. Between now and the end of term, we will be processing all items. Our goal is to clear the lost property by the end of the year. Any unclaimed items without names will be donated to charity or added to the second-hand uniform shop.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of lost clothing, we are unable to return named items directly to students.

We encourage both students and parents to check the lost property for any missing named items. All named items will be displayed on the racks for easy identification.

Thank you for your cooperation!
