PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The short week has brought lots of happenings in the OSPS community!

Monday was a Curriculum Day for all staff and students. Staff engaged in a Professional Practice Day working on planning and assessment. We hope our families enjoyed the extra-long weekend together with the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday.

On Wednesday, 5 children from OSPS competed at the SSV State Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium. To make the State Championships is a fantastic achievement, all of OSPS is so proud of them. We had 1 relay team qualify for finals, alongside Drewin who qualified for finals in both his 100m and 200m race in the 9/10-year-old boy age group. Drewin competed in the 100 metres coming first overall in a terrific race, winning a gold medal in the 9/10-year-old age group. He also competed in the 200 metres, also coming 1st winning his second gold medal for the day! The 12/13 boys put on a terrific performance in their heats and placed 6th overall in the finals. We are so proud of Masaki, Finn, Theodore and Alex who competed well and showed great determination, skill and sportsmanship in the lead up to, and at State Athletics. They set a great example of our school values. Thank you to all the staff that coached and supported the students throughout the athletics season.

Tonight is the school disco, organised by Parent Group! The junior disco (Prep to Year 2) is 5pm – 6pm, the senior disco (Year 3 to Year 6) is 6.30pm – 8pm. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door (cash only).

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind parents of student online behaviour and social media use (any form of chatting online) outside of school hours. As parents, at some stage your child will begin to engage with increased online activity, and it presents a variety of challenges for parents. Your child may already be exploring the use of social media, watching online content and have an online presence. At school we regularly reinforce and conduct explicit lessons about the appropriate use of social media and online behaviours, in particular in the senior school.

First and foremost, it is YOUR responsibility as their parents and guardians to ensure that your child is engaging in safe and appropriate behaviours online.

The OSPS School TV has a variety of resources for parents about how to ensure your child is safe and appropriate online. https://oakleighsouthps.vic.schooltv.me/newsletter/cyber-bullying

Have a great weekend.

SAFER SCHOOL SPEEDS ON CENTRE ROAD

We’re excited to announce that safety improvements are coming to Centre Road in Oakleigh South and Clarinda! To enhance the safety of our students, pedestrians, and cyclists, a new 40km/h school speed zone will be introduced during busy school times. This initiative includes the installation of nine electronic speed limit signs that will replace the current static signs.

The reduced speed limit will be in effect during peak hours — 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM — to help ensure safer travel near South Oakleigh Secondary College, Oakleigh South Primary School, and Clarinda Primary School.

Installation is set to begin in November 2024, with completion expected in early 2025. During this time, you may notice temporary lane closures and traffic controllers on site to assist with pedestrian safety.

For more details, you can contact Sharon Barnes at the Department of Transport and Planning at 0473 810 786, or visit the Transport Victoria website.

Let’s work together to keep our school community safe!

SCHOOLTV EDITION FOR FAMILIES ON: THE STATE OF YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

Parents and carers can play a crucial role in their children’s mental health. As a result, staying informed on the current state of youth mental health is vital, as it not only affects individuals, but also families and communities. According to recent research, the frequency of mental health disorders among young people is increasing, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm being among the most common challenges.

One of the reasons being attributed to this rise is the heightened stress and anxiety that many young people face today. Academic success, social media, and family issues are all influencing factors. Many young people are still suffering the long-term consequences of the pandemic, such as social isolation, uncertainty, and loss.

Parents can play an important role in their children’s mental health. Creating a safe and open environment for your children to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and feelings is vital. Encouraging healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep can help reduce their stress levels and boost your child’s overall mental health. There are also many resources and services available to children, adolescents, and their families, such as school counsellors, various mental health organisations, support lines, and of course, mental health professionals. It is important to remember that seeking help is a show of strength, not weakness, and that early intervention is critical in addressing young people’s mental health difficulties.

This edition of SchoolTV, discusses some of the major mental health issues affecting young people and how to support a child experiencing them.

As this is a parent/carer free event, we are looking for volunteers to assist on the night. If you don’t have a WWCC you can apply for free as a volunteer through: https://service.vic.gov.au/services/working-with-children.

REMEMBRANCE DAY MERCHANDISE

Each year, on November 11th, we take a moment to remember the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. It’s a time for us to reflect on their sacrifices and show our gratitude for the freedom we enjoy today.

To help support our armed forces community, our Student Voice will be coming around in the next couple of weeks to sell poppies, wristbands, and badges. You can purchase a poppy for just $2 or $5, a wristband for $3, and a badge for $10. All the money raised will go to the Poppy Appeal, which helps provide vital support to the armed forces.

By buying these items, you’re not just wearing a poppy or a badge—you’re making a difference in the lives of those who have given so much for our country. Let’s come together as a school community to show our support and remember those who have served.

Thank you, and let’s honour Remembrance Day with our hearts and actions!

LITERACY CORNER

We have been working hard to develop our narrative writing, including lots of detail, senses and onomatopoeia to make our writing POP!
Here’s some descriptive writing from Max in 2TM from his narrative, Stuck:

“Mayday! Mayday! We’re gonna crash!” Leon yelled as the shuttle was descending into the planet. “Brace for impact!” Zac yelled.
Today, me and my two trusty friends Zac and Leon were on a mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan, but we got sucked into a wormhole and blasted into another planet.
Zac and Leon even brought their sister, Violet, but there was no time to dwell on that. “We need to eject our seats,” I explained. At the same time, we pressed a button and ejected out of the shuttle. Our jet packs blasted off and we made a safe landing. In the distance, the shuttle crashed into the far side of the mountain on the planet.

“BOOM!”

YEAR 2 GEM

GRATITUDE: We are grateful for the opportunity to perform on stage in Productions!

EMPATHY: We are empathetic for those suffering from hayfever.

MINDFULNESS: We are mindful by enjoying the afternoon sunshine and going for a walk.

YEAR 2 RESILIENCE PROJECT

Students have been enhancing their emotional literacy through a variety of engaging activities, including journaling and role-playing. These activities allow them to delve into their own emotions, fostering a better understanding of their feelings and developing positive strategies for responding to a wide range of situations.

In our discussions, we have been focusing on the differences between the emotions that students experience themselves and those that others might feel. This has helped students not only to recognise their own emotional responses but also to empathise with others and respond appropriately to different emotional scenarios.

Additionally, this term we have introduced the concept of emotional thermometers. These tools are designed to help students articulate and rate their feelings in various emotional contexts, providing them with a tangible way to express and manage their emotions. By using these thermometers, students can better communicate how they feel and develop more effective coping strategies.

LOST PROPERTY

We currently have a significant number of uniforms in our lost property. Between now and the end of term, we will be processing all items. Our goal is to clear the lost property by the end of the year. Any unclaimed items without names will be donated to charity or added to the second-hand uniform shop.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of lost clothing, we are unable to return named items directly to students.

We encourage both students and parents to check the lost property for any missing named items. All named items will be displayed on the racks for easy identification.
