PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last Friday, a number of our talented students proudly represented our school at the Regional Athletics Championships, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and achievements. A huge congratulations to the 11-year-old boys’ relay team — Drewin, Boyd, Jack, and Thomas — who ran an outstanding race to take home the gold medal! Special congratulations also go to Drewin, who claimed gold in both the 100m and 200m, and to Kosta, who also secured gold in the 200m. These incredible athletes will now progress to the State Championships — what a fantastic achievement! Congratulations as well to the 10-year-old and 12-year-old boys’ relay teams, who both finished in a very impressive fourth place. We also acknowledge Arnav and Taylani, who competed brilliantly in their individual events. We wish all our competitors the very best of luck at the State Finals next Thursday, 6 October.

Today’s Colour Run was an absolute blast! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces, bright colours, and enthusiastic participants enjoying this special event. A huge thank you to our Parent Group for their amazing organisation and effort in making the day such a success.

A reminder that Monday is a Curriculum Day (student-free day) and Tuesday is the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Wednesday.

Enjoy the long weekend, stay safe, and we’ll see you all next week.

Warm regards,
Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal

SCHOOL MATTERS

SCHOOLTV – FRIENDSHIP & BELONGING

Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a young person’s wellbeing. It gives them a sense of security helping them feel valued which in turn builds their confidence.

Positive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood. Adult carers can support their child or teenager by providing guidance in the many social and emotional skills required for a healthy relationship. This will help them to obtain, retain and maintain friendships. However, not all friendship are regarded as positive. Sometimes young people develop negative or toxic friendships. Therefore, it is also important for them to learn how to identify, avoid or deal with such a friendship.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to support their young person’s friendship so that they experience a sense of belonging.

SUN SMART AT OSPS

From mid-August to April, Oakleigh South Primary School follows SunSmart and DET guidelines to keep students safe.

  • Hats are compulsory. Students must wear a bottle-green broad-brimmed, legionnaire, or bucket hat outdoors during high UV periods (mid-August to April). No Hat, No Play applies.
  • Hats are available from the second-hand uniform shop or PSW Cheltenham.
  • Sunscreen is recommended by SunSmart and DET when UV is 3+. Students may bring their own labelled sunscreen if suitable.

  • Students should wear their OSPS uniform (which is SunSmart-compliant) and manageable layers they can put on or take off independently, to avoid overheating.

  • A water bottle is recommended every day.

Daily UV levels are displayed on the TV screens in the Admin Building and via the SunSmart app.

Hats can be purchased from PSW Cheltenham or the OSPS second-hand uniform shop, open Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:45–9:15am, run by our wonmderful parent volunteers.

You can view our OSPS Sun Protection Policy for full details.

NEW JUNIOR BIKE STORAGE AREA COMMENCED

We’re excited to share that work has started on the first of two new bike storage areas for our students who ride or scoot to school. The concrete for the junior bike storage area has now been poured and levelled, ready for the next stage — adding the roof, fencing, and bike and scooter stands.

This project has been in the planning for many years, and now that the main building’s external renovations are complete, it’s wonderful to see it finally coming to life. The senior bike storage area will follow in due course.

A big thank you to our Parent Group, who have run fundraising events to make this project possible, and to our School Council for their continued support! 🙌

ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS

Dear Oakleigh South Primary School Community,

The Department of Transport & Planning has introduced a permanent 40km/h school speed zone along Centre Road, from Melaleuca Drive (Clarinda Primary School) to Cameron Avenue (South Oakleigh College).

This lower speed limit applies every school day during 8:00–9:30am and 2:30–4:00pm, returning to 60km/h at all other times.

This important safety change follows years of advocacy by OSPS families and the local community to make the area safer for students, families, and staff travelling to and from school.

For more information, visit the Transport Victoria project page.

Please obey all road rules and signage, take extra care during drop-off and pick-up times, and model safe driving behaviours around our school.

The road safety infographics below outline key traffic rules, safe parking guidance, and associated penalties:

STUDENT SHOWCASE

FARMING AND FITNESS FUN IN THE VILLAGE!

It’s been all action in the Village this term! Each class has been rolling up their sleeves for full farming sessions with Mr Hooley, Mr Wilde, and Mrs Dwyer. Students have been planting in our outdoor garden beds, caring for the chickens, refreshing our hydroponics and aquaponics setups, and creating their own sustainable pots to take home. There’s been plenty of laughter, muddy hands, and even the chance to feed the fish!

While some grades are busy getting their hands dirty on the farm, others are jumping into fitness fun with energetic skipping and ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ activities. It’s been a brilliant mix of learning, teamwork, and outdoor excitement!

In addition to their gardening duties, our farmers have also been sorting 10c containers from the purple recycling bins. These are taken to the recycling centre to help raise funds for our school. Please continue to support our efforts by placing eligible bottles and cans into the purple bins in the Year 3 area.

MATHEMATICS

In Maths this term, our Grade 3 students have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes and learning to describe their features, such as sides, corners, edges, and faces. They have also been discovering different types of angles, including right, acute, and obtuse angles, and have enjoyed spotting them in real-life objects around the classroom and school. The students have been developing great confidence using mathematical language and are becoming more aware of how shapes and angles are part of the world all around them!

LITERACY CORNER

This term, we have been exploring the art of persuasive writing. We have been learning how to convince and engage an audience by using powerful language features. We’ve focused on key persuasive devices such as repetition, emotive language, rhetorical questions, and exaggeration to make their writing more interesting and convincing. Students have been practising how to express their opinions clearly and support them with strong reasons. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learn to use persuasive techniques to influence and inspire their readers!

YEAR 3 GEM

GRATITUDE

We would like to say a big thank you to Adam Wallace for visiting our school and inspiring us with his creativity! The students loved learning from him and had so much fun drawing their own Hat Man characters. It was a wonderful opportunity for our Grade 3s to express their imagination and see how stories and illustrations can come to life.

EMPATHY

This term, our Grade 3 students have been learning about empathy by putting themselves in the place of the animals and plants in our school village. They have been thinking about how the chickens, plants, ducks, and fish might be feeling as the weather gets warmer, and what problems they might face. Students have been using their creativity and problem-solving skills to come up with ideas to help care for and protect them during the hotter months.

MINDFULNESS & EMOTIONAL LITERACY

We practise mindfulness by enjoying the longer evenings and taking a walk after dinner during daylight savings.

This week in mindfulness, our Grade 3 students have been learning about emotions and the importance of developing accurate emotional literacy—understanding and naming how we feel. We discussed how recognising our emotions helps us manage them in healthy ways. Students explored different coping strategies they can use to help calm and ground themselves, such as deep breathing, taking a short break, or using positive self-talk. These skills are helping students build greater self-awareness and resilience in their everyday lives.
