PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The week started with the Year 3’s participating in a free incursion run by Monash Council, called Closing the Loop. Classes explored the world’s waste problem, learnt about natural resource used and the impacts of landfill. Students investigated how to be more sustainable by following the 5Rs.
The Year 5 students commenced their leadership speeches to their peers in each house. The speeches are a part of the process for selection of the captains and leadership positions in Year 6 2025. Students have worked very hard on writing and reviewing their own speeches in class and have practiced their delivery to a group. All the best to our Year 5s.
Half of the 2025 new Prep students attended OSPS for their second trasition session. Children participated in activities and had a taste of the Prep environment, while parents engaged in a presentation on what literacy and numeracy will look like when their child starts Prep next year.
I want to thank you all for your support and sensitivity as our wider community comes to terms with what can only be described as a complete tragedy. The devastating death of Year 5 student Jack Davey is being felt deeply, not just by the Auburn South Primary School community, but by our own school community. Our heartfelt sympathy remains with everyone at Auburn South and with Jack’s family and friends at this very sad time. Our focus is always the welfare of our students, staff and broader school community, so I just want to remind you that support is available at school for anyone who needs it.
Auburn South Primary School Principal Marcus Wicher has extended his heartfelt thanks to everyone in our local community for their generous offers of support and their sensitivity, as their school navigates the ongoing impacts of this tragedy. If you have any questions, particularly about the supports available to you and your family, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Have a restful and safe weekend and don’t forget Monday 4th November is a Curriculum Day and Melbourne Cup Public Holiday is Tuesday, 5th November.

SCHOOL MATTERS
SAFER SCHOOL SPEEDS ON CENTRE ROAD
We’re excited to announce that safety improvements are coming to Centre Road in Oakleigh South and Clarinda! To enhance the safety of our students, pedestrians, and cyclists, a new 40km/h school speed zone will be introduced during busy school times. This initiative includes the installation of nine electronic speed limit signs that will replace the current static signs.
The reduced speed limit will be in effect during peak hours—8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM—to help ensure safer travel near South Oakleigh Secondary College, Oakleigh South Primary School, and Clarinda Primary School.
Installation is set to begin in November 2024, with completion expected in early 2025. During this time, you may notice temporary lane closures and traffic controllers on site to assist with pedestrian safety.
For more details, you can contact Sharon Barnes at the Department of Transport and Planning at 0473 810 786, or visit the Transport Victoria website.
Let’s work together to keep our school community safe!

SCHOOLTV EDITION FOR FAMILIES ON: RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS
Fostering a nurturing environment of respectful relationships within your family holds the key to not only harmonious living, but also improved academic outcomes for your children. As parents and caregivers, embracing the art of teaching children about respect at a young age sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy interactions and empathetic understanding. It will help cultivate a positive environment where communication flourishes, conflicts are resolved constructively, and bonds are fortified.
Teaching children to respect themselves and others will open up avenues for both personal growth and academic achievement. Fostering an environment where respect is not just a word, but a practiced behaviour, will empower young people with essential life skills. Effective communication, active listening, and the art of compromise will provide your child with a solid foundation that will transcend family interactions and help them collaborate effectively with peers, teachers and the broader community.
Equipping children with an understanding of healthy versus unhealthy relationships is an important aspect of their development. It will guide them to make informed choices, foster positive connections, and set boundaries that contribute to their emotional wellbeing. Understanding the nuances between healthy and unhealthy relationships provides children with the essential tools to navigate their social world, build self-esteem, and cultivate meaningful relationships.
In this edition of SchoolTV, learn how to empower young people in healthy interactions to embrace differences and make connections that honour their self-worth.

OSPS SCHOOL DISCO
Get your dancing shoes on because, the OSPS disco is back! The disco will be on Friday, 8 November in the school hall. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased via TryBooking or at the door (cash only). Please refer to the Compass sent with the Trybooking link.
There will be two discos on the night:
- Junior Disco (prep to year 2): 5pm – 6pm
- Senior Disco (year 3 to year 6): 6.30pm – 8pm
Glow products will be available for purchase shortly so keep an eye on your Compass notifications. For those purchasing tickets via TryBooking, wristbands will also be distributed on the day of the disco. We ask that students come to the disco wearing their wristbands for quick entry.
As this is a parent/carer free event, we are looking for volunteers to assist on the night. If you have a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) and are available to help, please contact Parent Group on osparentgroup67@gmail.com advising which session you’d like to help with. If you don’t have a WWCC you can apply for free as a volunteer through: https://service.vic.gov.au/services/working-with-children.
REMEMBRANCE DAY MERCHANDISE
Each year, on November 11th, we take a moment to remember the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. It’s a time for us to reflect on their sacrifices and show our gratitude for the freedom we enjoy today.
To help support our armed forces community, our Student Voice will be coming around in the next couple of weeks to sell poppies, wristbands, and badges. You can purchase a poppy for just $2 or $5, a wristband for $3, and a badge for $10. All the money raised will go to the Poppy Appeal, which helps provide vital support to the armed forces.
By buying these items, you’re not just wearing a poppy or a badge—you’re making a difference in the lives of those who have given so much for our country. Let’s come together as a school community to show our support and remember those who have served.
Thank you, and let’s honour Remembrance Day with our hearts and actions!
JAPANESE NEWSLETTER
Konnichiwa everyone!
Last term, we said goodbye to Asami Sensei and Mizuki Sensei, and we all miss them. However, we are lucky to welcome two new volunteer teachers from Japan, Nana and Misato, both from Fukuoka. Misato will be with us until November 1st, and Nana will stay until the end of the year. We are very excited to have them here!
Thank you to our wonderful OSPS community for supporting the Japanese program over the years. We have been able to bring volunteers to our school because of the strong support not just from the school but from the whole community. A big thank you to the families who host our volunteers while they are in Melbourne!
We would love to continue having volunteers, as they bring so much positive energy and provide extra help for our students. It is also a great chance for students to learn directly from Japanese volunteers. If you are interested in hosting a volunteer in the future, please contact our Japanese department.
We have been focusing on learning Hiragana characters throughout the year, alongside the other topics we teach in Japanese. Many students have asked how they can get better at reading and writing Hiragana. Since we only have one Japanese lesson a week, it is important for students to practice outside of school to improve.
Here are some suggestions for how students can learn Japanese at home:
- Find a Hiragana chart online and practice writing the characters. They can also make flashcards to help them study.
- Download apps such as Hiragana Quest, Kana Drill and Human Japanese Lite to practice Hiragana.
- Try Duolingo! It’s a great app for learning languages, including Japanese.
- There are many resources online, and one website we recommend for practicing Hiragana is https://kana-quiz.tofugu.com/
If you have any questions or need help, feel free to reach out to us. We are looking forward to teaching exciting new topics this term! Arigato!
MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF JAPANESE FETE
Join us for the MISJ Fete on Saturday 16th November, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Oakleigh South Primary School!
The Melbourne International School of Japanese (MISJ) is dedicated to fostering a rich understanding of Japanese language and culture among its students. Our vibrant community comprises passionate teachers, engaged families, and enthusiastic learners who celebrate the diversity and depth of Japanese traditions.
This year’s fete promises a fantastic afternoon filled with delicious food stalls, fun kids’ activities, a silent auction, and a flea market, all designed to bring our community together.
Come along to support MISJ and its wonderful students, families, staff, and the wider community! We can’t wait to see you there!
REMINDER: SUN PROTECTION MEASURES
With the warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remind everyone about our sun protection rules. Starting from Monday 2nd September, all students are required to wear their sun-protective hats during outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat back to school this week, as the NO HAT, NO PLAY rule will be strictly enforced. Students without a hat will need to stay in shaded areas or be supervised indoors during recess and lunch breaks.
Students are also welcome to bring sunscreen to apply before going outside. It’s a good habit to start using sunscreen, especially as UV levels rise. We encourage families to support these sun safety measures to protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays.
For more details, you can review our SunSmart Policy on the school website, which outlines our approach to keeping students sun safe during school hours and at events.
Let’s all work together to stay sun smart and enjoy the sunshine safely!

STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 1 SHOWCASE
This Term, the Year 1’s have been learning about all the different continents of the world. Today all the year 1’s went to the African Drumming Incursion, and we learnt about African dances, songs and how to make different sounds/tunes on the drums. Everyone enjoyed playing on the drums and moving their bodies to the African rhythms! It was a great energetic and creative musical incursion and we all had lots of fun!
Here are some photos:
Year 1 students have also been visiting BlueCross Aged Care and have enjoyed spending time with the residents, reading stories, singing songs, playing games, and chatting with them. It has been a very special experience for both the students and the residents.
LITERACY CORNER
In Literacy, Year 1 students have been writing narratives and focusing on sizzling starts, character and setting descriptions, story problems, and solutions.
Here are some Year 1 narratives:
YEAR 1 GEM
GRATITUDE: We are grateful for sharing our time with the Blue Cross residents!
EMPATHY: We are empathetic for the new Preps starting as it’s a big change for them!
MINDFULNESS: We are mindful of what our body clues are telling us about how we feel.
YEAR 1 RESILIENCE PROJECT
Year 1 students have been learning all about body clues and how we can use these to ensure we feel safe. They wrote in their resilience journals about the trusted people in their lives. Students have also been discussing what emotions they feel in everyday settings and then created a ‘feelings book’ to explore different emotions and feelings people may experience.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of lost clothing, we are unable to return named items directly to students.
