PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Last Friday, the first group of 2025 preps visited OSPS and enjoyed the afternoon rotating through activities in the prep rooms. Their parents enjoyed a welcome afternoon tea followed by an information session in the hall. Today, we will have the second group of preps come to school, followed by their second visit in the coming weeks.
Congratulations to our 12 students who competed at the Southern Metropolitan Region Athletics Carnival on Monday. Our students performed exceptionally well in all of their events. We would like to congratulate the following relay teams that trained very hard over many weeks to reach Region:
- 10-year Boys: Koby, Boyd, Kosta & Drewin
- 11-year Boys: Alwyn, Oliver Mo, Oliver Mc & Sasha
- 12-year Boys: Theodore (Teddy), Alex, Masaki & Finn
Our 12-year Boys relay team won gold and will be progressing to the State Championships. We also had a few students compete in individual events:
- Drewin: 100m & 200m
- Alwyn: Long Jump & High Jump
- Alex: 100m (bronze medal)
Drewin won gold in the 100 and 200 metre events (2 PBs) and will also progress to the State Championships, which will be held on Wednesday, 6th November at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Congratulations to our students who competed for Oakleigh South PS. We are very proud of all your efforts and wish our 12-year Boys relay team and Drewin all the very best at the upcoming State Championships. We would also like to thank Mr Mooney and Ms Gunning for the hours they have spent training our students so that they could perform at their very best. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by our school community.
Lastly, a reminder that all children are to be picked up from school at 3.30pm. This week, we have had a few occurrences where children are still waiting for parents at 4.30pm on the school oval. This is not acceptable, as after school hours, the grounds become a thoroughfare for walkers on the oval and people on the streets. At the start of the day, please do not drop off your child before 8.35am. Camp Australia runs the before and after school care program for you, or please make alternative arrangements with friends and family. If there is a circumstance where you are running late, please call the office so we can tell your child to wait for you at the office. Please work together to keep our children safe.
Have a great weekend,
Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal
SCHOOL MATTERS
SAFER SCHOOL SPEEDS ON CENTRE ROAD
We’re excited to announce that safety improvements are coming to Centre Road in Oakleigh South and Clarinda! To enhance the safety of our students, pedestrians, and cyclists, a new 40km/h school speed zone will be introduced during busy school times. This initiative includes the installation of nine electronic speed limit signs that will replace the current static signs.
The reduced speed limit will be in effect during peak hours—8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM—to help ensure safer travel near South Oakleigh Secondary College, Oakleigh South Primary School, and Clarinda Primary School.
Installation is set to begin in November 2024, with completion expected in early 2025. During this time, you may notice temporary lane closures and traffic controllers on site to assist with pedestrian safety.
For more details, you can contact Sharon Barnes at the Department of Transport and Planning at 0473 810 786, or visit the Transport Victoria website.
Let’s work together to keep our school community safe!
SCHOOLTV EDITION FOR FAMILIES ON: RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS
Fostering a nurturing environment of respectful relationships within your family holds the key to not only harmonious living, but also improved academic outcomes for your children. As parents and caregivers, embracing the art of teaching children about respect at a young age sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy interactions and empathetic understanding. It will help cultivate a positive environment where communication flourishes, conflicts are resolved constructively, and bonds are fortified.
Teaching children to respect themselves and others will open up avenues for both personal growth and academic achievement. Fostering an environment where respect is not just a word, but a practiced behaviour, will empower young people with essential life skills. Effective communication, active listening, and the art of compromise will provide your child with a solid foundation that will transcend family interactions and help them collaborate effectively with peers, teachers and the broader community.
Equipping children with an understanding of healthy versus unhealthy relationships is an important aspect of their development. It will guide them to make informed choices, foster positive connections, and set boundaries that contribute to their emotional wellbeing. Understanding the nuances between healthy and unhealthy relationships provides children with the essential tools to navigate their social world, build self-esteem, and cultivate meaningful relationships.
In this edition of SchoolTV, learn how to empower young people in healthy interactions to embrace differences and make connections that honour their self-worth.

OSPS SCHOOL DISCO
Get your dancing shoes on because, the OSPS disco is back! The disco will be on Friday, 8 November in the school hall. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased via TryBooking or at the door (cash only). Please refer to the Compass sent with the Trybooking link.
There will be two discos on the night:
- Junior Disco (prep to year 2): 5pm – 6pm
- Senior Disco (year 3 to year 6): 6.30pm – 8pm
Glow products will be available for purchase shortly so keep an eye on your Compass notifications. For those purchasing tickets via TryBooking, wristbands will also be distributed on the day of the disco. We ask that students come to the disco wearing their wristbands for quick entry.
As this is a parent/carer free event, we are looking for volunteers to assist on the night. If you have a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) and are available to help, please contact Parent Group on osparentgroup67@gmail.com advising which session you’d like to help with. If you don’t have a WWCC you can apply for free as a volunteer through: https://service.vic.gov.au/services/working-with-children.
REMEMBRANCE DAY MERCHANDISE
Each year, on November 11th, we take a moment to remember the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. It’s a time for us to reflect on their sacrifices and show our gratitude for the freedom we enjoy today.
To help support our armed forces community, our Student Voice will be coming around in the next couple of weeks to sell poppies, wristbands, and badges. You can purchase a poppy for just $2 or $5, a wristband for $3, and a badge for $10. All the money raised will go to the Poppy Appeal, which helps provide vital support to the armed forces.
By buying these items, you’re not just wearing a poppy or a badge—you’re making a difference in the lives of those who have given so much for our country. Let’s come together as a school community to show our support and remember those who have served.
Thank you, and let’s honour Remembrance Day with our hearts and actions!
REMINDER: SUN PROTECTION MEASURES
With the warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remind everyone about our sun protection rules. Starting from Monday 2nd September, all students are required to wear their sun-protective hats during outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat back to school this week, as the NO HAT, NO PLAY rule will be strictly enforced. Students without a hat will need to stay in shaded areas or be supervised indoors during recess and lunch breaks.
Students are also welcome to bring sunscreen to apply before going outside. It’s a good habit to start using sunscreen, especially as UV levels rise. We encourage families to support these sun safety measures to protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays.
For more details, you can review our SunSmart Policy on the school website, which outlines our approach to keeping students sun safe during school hours and at events.
Let’s all work together to stay sun smart and enjoy the sunshine safely!

STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 3 SHOWCASE
This term, in the Year 3 Village, our farmers have been having fun collecting eggs from our chickens and ducks who have been laying fresh eggs every day. Our farmers have also been busy feeding the animals, planting seedlings in our garden beds and raising seeds in our very own hothouse. We have been planting a range of vegetables, including rhubarb, cucumber, snow peas, zucchini, parsnips, carrots, capsicums and tomatoes. We are also learning to be environmental warriors by collecting litter to ensure it doesn’t wash down our drains and into the ocean.
Thank you Mr Wilde and Mr Hooley for helping us!
LITERACY CORNER
In Literacy, the year 3 students have been learning how to write persuasive arguments to convince others of their opinions. Students have been working hard to produce exciting sizzling starts to hook their readers attention and by using the OREO technique to create paragraphs which explain their Opinion, Reason, with an Example backed up by Evidence, and then ending their paragraphs by stating their opinion again. I am certain you will enjoy reading a sample of our wonderful year 3 persuasive writing pieces.
HERO AWARD
I think that there is one person in the whole entire universe who deserves an award! I will definitely persuade you that my Mumma deserves this award because she deals with 2 kids, makes food for me and always helps me if necessary.
There is no doubt that Mumma deserves an award because she deals with two kids with monkey-like personalities. For example, after tucking me in at night, my brother keeps her awake for the whole, entire night! This is why Mumma must receive an appreciation award.
Of course Mumma needs that hero award because after staying awake for the whole entire night, she makes food for the whole family! For example, after getting an hour of rest, Mumma gets up and makes my lunch for school! Why else would Mumma deserve the hero award?
Mumma also needs the award because on top of all that, she always finds time to help me when I need help. For example, when I needed help to understand the Mathletics question, she came to help me. Even if she is busy with a hundred other things! It is obvious that Mumma needs an award.
Now that I have convinced you that my mum is the greatest hero of all time, go and make a dazzling certificate for her, or else…
MY BIG IDEA
I strongly believe that everyone in the world should get Wednesdays off from school or work, and I know that I will definitely persuade you with my three incredible reasons.
Firstly, I strongly believe that everyone should get Wednesdays off because then people can spend more time with their friends and family. As an example, if you haven’t seen some of your family members in a long time, then you can visit them on Wednesdays. Wouldn’t you agree?
Secondly, I think everyone should get a Wednesday off because then kids and parents can have more time to do the things they love. As an example, if a kid had a big basketball game coming up, then the kid could have a lot more time to practise on Wednesday and have a higher chance to win the game. Experts would say that this is a very good idea, right?
Finally, I think everyone should get Wednesdays off because then kids would have more free time to do homework and always finish it on time. For example, if a class was doing Dojo points for homework, so many kids would definitely like this idea, right?
In conclusion, that’s why I strongly believe that everyone should get Wednesdays off and I know that I have convinced you with my three outstanding reasons! So, if you’re ever late for school on Wednesday, just remember you don’t have school on Wednesdays anymore… so you’ll be okay!
HERO AWARD
“Rise and shine my sunshine!”, my mum called from downstairs.
I believe that my mum should get a hero award because she takes me to school, makes my dinner and works hard to get money for the family. With my three reasons, I am certain that I will convince you that my mum should get a hero award.
Firstly, I am sure that my mum should get an hero award, because she takes me to school. For instance, I would have to walk to school, but instead mum takes me to school. For that reason I have decided that my mum should get a hero award.
Secondly, my mum certainly should get a hero award because she makes me dinner every night, for example I would starve if I didn’t have my wonderful mum cooking dinner for me. For this reason my mum should definitely get a hero award.
Lastly, I believe that my mum should get a hero award because she works hard to earn money for our family. For instance if my mum didn’t work hard she wouldn’t have money for food. This is why my mum should get a hero award.
In conclusion I demand that my mum should get a hero award because she takes me to school, makes me dinner and works hard to earn money. For all these reasons I believe I have convinced you that my mum should get a hero award. Now, let’s get her one today!

I’m grateful that I have family and friends. My parents take care of me, feed me and buy things for me. They also love me very much. I am also grateful for my friends because they support me and play with me.
