SCHOOL MATTERS
SUSTAINABILITY NEWS: BABY BIRDS, AUSSIE BIRD COUNT & WASTE FREE WEDNESDAY
Did you know that it is fledgling season? Right now baby birds are beginning to leave their nests and learning how to fly. If you see a fledgling on the ground, please remember to leave the baby bird alone. Parent birds are always nearby watching their babies.
This week the Aussie Bird Count is happening up until Sunday 20th October! You can help Australian scientists by going outside and recording all the birds you can see in your backyard or at your local park, and it only takes 10 minutes! Check out the Bird Life Aussie Bird Count website for more information https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/
This term the Sustainability Team would like to start a new challenge to help reduce litter at our school. Each Wednesday students, families and teachers will be encouraged to pack their lunchboxes without wrappers. Students who participate in the Lunch-Free Waste Challenge will earn house points for their team.
Thank you to all students at OSPS who have been helping us to care for the environment by putting rubbish in the bins and recycling their 10 cent bottles into our purple bins in the Year 3 Village. Keep up the terrific effort for a Sustainable future!

In the coming months, the Department of Education will send you 2 email communications for each of your children enrolled in Victorian government schools.
By Friday 18 October 2024, please ensure that your child’s 2025 enrolment is completed and that your contact information is up to date.
The 2 emails from the Department of Education will:
-
- Confirm your email address between mid-October and late-November.
- Provide you with your unique $400 School Saving Bonus code by the end of November.
If you do not receive a confirmation email from the department by late-November, please check your spam or junk folders and contact the Office if needed.
You can read more about the School Saving Bonus on the Department of Education website, with key information now available in 14 different languages.
REMINDER: SUN PROTECTION MEASURES
With the warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remind everyone about our sun protection rules. Starting from Monday 2nd September, all students are required to wear their sun-protective hats during outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat back to school this week, as the NO HAT, NO PLAY rule will be strictly enforced. Students without a hat will need to stay in shaded areas or be supervised indoors during recess and lunch breaks.
Students are also welcome to bring sunscreen to apply before going outside. It’s a good habit to start using sunscreen, especially as UV levels rise. We encourage families to support these sun safety measures to protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays.
For more details, you can review our SunSmart Policy on the school website, which outlines our approach to keeping students sun safe during school hours and at events.
Let’s all work together to stay sun smart and enjoy the sunshine safely!

STUDENT SHOWCASE
PE & SPORT
Term 4 is in full swing at OSPS, and it’s go, go, go for all students in PE and Sport!
Over the next month, all students will be tested on their fitness and ball skills, with the older students also being assessed on their ball skills in game situations.
Excitingly, 39 students will represent OSPS at the Beachside Division Athletics Carnival on 15 October – we wish them the best of luck!
Our Grade 5 students are busy selecting the sports they wish to play in both Summer and Winter for 2025 as part of the Bentleigh District Interschool Sports Competition.
Grade 6 students have recently participated in a four-week competition organised by the House Captains during their Thursday Sports Session. Now, they will move on to a Dodgeball Tournament, where they can create their own teams and names. This round-robin tournament will lead to an exciting Grand Final, which many students came out to watch last year. The winning team will then face off against the Teachers’ team on the last day of the school year – always a fun event!
To finish off the year, we will have our annual House Swimming competition for all Grade 3-5 students who can competently swim 25 metres, along with selected Grade 2 students who were identified as strong swimmers during earlier swimming lessons. Results from this event will help select the 2025 Swimming team.
