PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to all our OSPS students, families and friends to Term 4.
Our Year 2 and 4 students had a talk with Uncle Mark, an Indigenous leader this week about the land Oakleigh South Prinary School is on and all the local features. Our school is unique becuase the border of the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples runs straight through the middle! There are only a few schools in the whole state where the border runs through the property. He showed students pictures of what Oakeligh South Primary School lands looked like before settlement and he played the sounds of nature of what you’d have expected to hear. Uncle Mark told students what parts of the land he finds special to the Indigenous people.
Year 5’s participated in an incursion called ‘Monday Talk’ where the presenter discussed how money works in our society, how to save money and be wise spending money!
As mentioned on the school facebook page and website post, Indigenous Artist Alex Kerr, from Liwik Yiyah Consulting spent the holidays transforming OSPS’s podium and footpath outside the office into an amazing artwork to be enjoyed by the whole community. Alex incorporated the river, local bird footprints, gathering circles and designed an indigenous wattle bird as the feature which is our school emblem. Thank you, Alex, for your work and energy towards our project!
We have a curriculum day next Wednesday 16th October, which is a student free day.
Have a lovely weekend.

SCHOOL MATTERS

SCHOOL SAVING BONUS

Dear Parents and Carers,

As shared with you previously, parents and carers of every child enrolled in a Victorian government school in 2025 will receive the one-off School Saving Bonus $400 support.

In the coming months, the Department of Education will send you 2 email communications for each of your children enrolled in Victorian government schools.

By Friday 18 October 2024, please ensure that your child’s 2025 enrolment is completed and that your contact information is up to date.

The 2 emails from the Department of Education will:

    1. Confirm your email address between mid-October and late-November.
    2. Provide you with your unique $400 School Saving Bonus code by the end of November.

If you do not receive a confirmation email from the department by late-November, please check your spam or junk folders and contact the Office if needed.

You can read more about the School Saving Bonus on the Department of Education website, with key information now available in 14 different languages.

REMINDER: SUN PROTECTION MEASURES

With the warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remind everyone about our sun protection rules. Starting from Monday 2nd September, all students are required to wear their sun-protective hats during outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat back to school this week, as the NO HAT, NO PLAY rule will be strictly enforced. Students without a hat will need to stay in shaded areas or be supervised indoors during recess and lunch breaks.

Students are also welcome to bring sunscreen to apply before going outside. It’s a good habit to start using sunscreen, especially as UV levels rise. We encourage families to support these sun safety measures to protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays.

For more details, you can review our SunSmart Policy on the school website, which outlines our approach to keeping students sun safe during school hours and at events.

Let’s all work together to stay sun smart and enjoy the sunshine safely!
