Yesterday was RU OK? Day. This day highlights the impact of not only asking someone if they are okay and being a good listener, but also feeling safe to admit if we aren’t feeling okay ourselves. This builds the social and emotional skills of children by helping them develop the skills they need to support each other and be good friends. Staying connected, checking in with friends/ family and opening up to others when we need a helping hand are super important not only on this day, but every day. The students were involved in class discussions and activities to recognise this day.

Have a great weekend!

OSPS FOOTY DAY

Get ready for OSPS Footy Day on the last day of term! We can’t wait to see everyone dressed in their favorite team’s colors. It doesn’t have to be AFL—any sport is welcome!

We’re raising funds for the Children’s Tumour Foundation and invite donations. This year, we’re also hosting our second annual Longest Coin Line competition. Each class will aim to create the longest coin line, with exciting prizes up for grabs. So, start bringing your coins in during the last week! Last year’s winning class reached an incredible 21 meters—can anyone beat that?

Parents are welcome to join us for the Footy Day Parade on the junior oval:

  • Prep–Year 2: Session 1
  • Years 3–6: Session 2

Plus, our Longest Kick competition might have a twist this year, so stay tuned!

A big thanks to the Parent Group for providing hot dogs at lunchtime. Hot dogs will be $5 each, with a plant-based option also available. Juice boxes will be on sale for $2—great value for a fun day!

We’re looking forward to an awesome Footy Day—see you there!

SCHOOL SAVING BONUS

In Term 4 2024, families with a child enrolled in a government school from Prep to Year 12 in 2025 will receive the one-off $400 School Saving Bonus.

The $400 School Saving Bonus provides families with support for education-related costs, such as school activities and/or school uniforms and textbooks. The School Saving Bonus is not available for full-fee international students, home schooled students, TAFE students and students attending kindergarten in 2025.

ACTIONS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

  • To ensure that all families are eligible for the School Savings Bonus of $400, it is essential that we have current details on file. Without this information, you may not receive important notifications and verifications from the Department of Education.
This week all students Prep – Year 5 have brought home home a DET Data Collection Form. Please complete this form using clear, legible print.
Year 6 students will receive information from their secondary school.

All forms must be returned to your child’s class teacher by the morning of Friday, 20th September.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.

We need to ensure your contact information is up to date as the Department of Education will email you twice:

  • in October, to verify your email address
  • in November, with your $400 School Saving Bonus.

Please check your junk mail regularly to make sure you do not miss an important email.

REMINDER: SUN PROTECTION MEASURES

With the warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remind everyone about our sun protection rules. Starting from Monday, 2nd September, all students are required to wear their sun-protective hats during outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat back to school this week, as the NO HAT, NO PLAY rule will be strictly enforced. Students without a hat will need to stay in shaded areas or be supervised indoors during recess and lunch breaks.

Students are also welcome to bring sunscreen to apply before going outside. It’s a good habit to start using sunscreen, especially as UV levels rise. We encourage families to support these sun safety measures to protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays.

For more details, you can review our SunSmart Policy on the school website, which outlines our approach to keeping students sun safe during school hours and at events.

Let’s all work together to stay sun smart and enjoy the sunshine safely!

STUDENT SHOWCASE

PREP SHOWCASE

The Prep students have had an exciting few weeks, celebrating two special occasions with memorable events. First, we reached the milestone of 100 days of school! To mark this achievement, the students took part in activities all about the number 100—from counting 100 objects to creating necklaces with 100 beads. They even dressed up as 100-year-olds, complete with canes, glasses, and grey hair! The day was filled with fun, including a class party and plenty of laughs as students and teachers admired each other’s creative costumes.

Following that, we hosted a heartwarming Father’s Day Afternoon, where dads or special people in the children’s lives joined us for an afternoon of fun and bonding. Activities included temporary tattoos, hair gel styling, mini golf, bowling, and paper airplane making. There was even some messy fun with shaving cream! It was a delightful afternoon, filled with smiles and laughter, as we honoured the important people in our students’ lives and made lasting memories together.

LITERACY CORNER

In Literacy, the Preps are working hard on learning to write a narrative (story). We have been looking at characters, settings, problems, and solutions for our writing ideas. During Literacy Groups, we extend our reading skills and practice new strategies, such as reading ahead to work out a word, self-correcting, rereading if something does not make sense, and predicting what will happen. We are exploring digraphs and discovering many new sounds in our world that are made from two letters, such as sh, th, ch, etc. We also spend time practicing our handwriting, using the correct starting points and learning to control tall letters and letters with tails.

PREP GEM

GRATITUDE: We are grateful for all the fun celebrations and dress up days we have had this term.

EMPATHY: We have been learning about how to be a good friend by considering others and their feelings.

MINDFULNESS: We are mindful of keeping our school environment safe, clean and happy.

WILDLIFE WONDERS: KOOKABURRAS AT OSPS

This week at Oakleigh South Primary School (OSPS), we were treated to a special visit from some of Australia’s most iconic birds – the kookaburras! Ms O’Connor captured some fantastic photos of these cheerful visitors perched on trees and fences around the school, delighting students and staff alike. Known for their distinctive laugh, the kookaburras added a touch of nature’s charm to our grounds, reminding us of the beauty of the wildlife we are lucky to share our space with!
