PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Excitement is building across the school as our Year 6 students prepare for their upcoming production of Matilda! Both casts delivered a sneak peek at this week’s assembly, and they were absolutely fantastic – what a talented group of students we have! Dress rehearsals begin next week, with full performances the following week. Tickets are still available through TryBooking, so secure yours before they sell out!

In other exciting news, the 2025 Victorian State Schools Spectacular is fast approaching – scheduled for Saturday 13 September, with performances at 1:00pm and 6:30pm. Our students have been rehearsing diligently, and we’re immensely proud of their dedication and enthusiasm. It promises to be an unforgettable show!

This week, students enjoyed the “Being Brave” show presented by Brainstorm Productions. The performance conveyed a powerful message about courage and resilience in various settings – at school, home, and in the community. The show resonated deeply with our students and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated Parent Group for organising and running the Father’s Day/Special Person’s Stall. Our students cherished the opportunity to select something special, which will surely bring joy this Sunday. We wish all fathers and special people a wonderful day!

Our Prep students enjoyed a special afternoon yesterday, welcoming their dads and special people into their classrooms for activities and celebration. These precious moments strengthen family bonds, and it was delightful to witness the shared joy and connection.

Speaking of our wonderful Preps – they embark on their very first excursion next Wednesday! They’re heading to Melbourne Zoo, and anticipation is mounting. We hope they have a magnificent day filled with discovery and fun.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Warm regards,

Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal

CELEBRATING OUR AMAZING EDUCATION SUPPORT STAFF!

This week we proudly celebrate and recognise the incredible work of our Education Support (ES) staff at OSPS. Their dedication, care, and tireless support make a world of difference to our students, teachers, and school community every single day. Whether in classrooms, the office, the yard, or behind the scenes, our ES team go above and beyond to ensure our school is a safe, welcoming and thriving place for all.

We are so grateful for everything they do. Thank you to our wonderful ES staff!

SHARE THE DIGNITY

A HUGE thank you for supporting Share the Dignity 2025!

The OSPS Parent Group is so proud of the incredible generosity shown by our school community in supporting Share the Dignity. Thanks to your donations, countless women, girls, and those experiencing homelessness will have access to essential sanitary items that many of us take for granted.

Your kindness helps restore dignity during tough times and ensures that no one has to choose between basic necessities. Every contribution, big or small, has made a real difference — and together our school community has shown the power of compassion in action.

Thank you for getting behind such an important cause and helping us spread dignity where it’s needed most.

Thank you!

R U OK? DAY & SUPERHERO DRESS UP

Next Thursday 11th September, OSPS will acknowledge R U OK? Day, a National Day of Action reminding us all of the importance of checking in with friends, family, and those around us.

We encourage all students to come dressed as:

  • real-life superhero in their life (such as a parent, emergency services, or role model),
  • A favourite comic-book superhero, or
  • Simply wear the colour yellow to show support.

Throughout the day, students will take part in classroom activities that focus on kindness, inclusivity, and the power of being an Upstander. When we embrace who we are, respect differences we help create a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels they belong.

Let’s continue to encourage our students to speak up, connect with others, and help create a community where everyone feels respected and cared for.

So, remember: asking “R U OK?” is important every day – because a conversation could change a life.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 6…

BUSINESS EXPO

On the afternoon of Friday the 8th of August, the Year 6 Building was transformed into the Year 6 Business District. Our Business Expo afternoon was the result of months of hard work with students forming groups and using the design thinking approach to brainstorm unique business ideas. The target audience was Year 6 parents, so our students had to ensure they displayed empathy and developed ideas that would appeal to adults. Over the weeks our young entrepreneurs held business meetings and each business created a website, designed advertisements, produced merchandise and constructed games. They had to ensure they kept accurate records of their expenditure and communicated well.

On the day, students were overwhelmed with the support provided by their parents and O.S.P.S. staff. At times, they were forced to negotiate prices with stingy customers and spruiking was necessary to attract attention. The afternoon flew by with students busily recording every transaction to ensure they balanced the books. Overall, the Year 6 Business Expo was an enormous triumph and everyone learnt so much from this amazing experience. Teamwork played a huge part in the success of this project with the biggest lesson being: BUSINESS IS TOUGH!

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION

The Year 6 Production of Matilda Jr is not far away! Tickets are currently on sale to the whole school community for what promises to be four amazing nights of singing, dancing and little bit of mischief. The Year 6 students and production team have been hard at work and are ready to put on an amazing show! DO NOT MISS IT! Tickets can be booked via this link or the QR code.

DIVISION & REGIONAL SOCCER

Congratulations to the Oakleigh South boys soccer team, who claimed victory at the Division Soccer Tournament and progressed to the Regional Championships at Casey Fields on August 26th.

Led strongly by the leadership group of Sasha, Marco, Alwyn and Patrick, the team showed outstanding spirit, skill and commitment throughout the season.

A special thank you goes to Charli and Tilly for their support on the day, as well as all the families who helped with drop offs, pick ups, and cheering from the sidelines. It was an incredible season, with the boys going 13 games undefeated across all competition before falling just short in a thrilling match against Hampton Primary, the eventual Southern Metro Regional champions.

We are very proud of the team’s achievements and the way they represented Oakleigh South Primary School with pride.

LITERACY CORNER

Last week, Year 6 students completed a Cold Write narrative based on the topic ‘Stranger At The Door’. Our students took this prompt in many different and exciting directions, working on sizzling starts, characterisation, building tension and exciting endings. Here is a passage from John in 6NM:

The street was quiet. Most nights, his neighbour’s dog barked at him with aggression, but tonight the dog didn’t seem to notice him. Now, gasping for breath, he felt satisfied with the run and turned the corner to find himself face to face with a man.

The man blocking his door had a worn down stick, barely able to support his weight. He looked at Jack with desperation showing in his dark brown eyes. “Please help me,” he managed to croak. Jack loooked back, speechless. Then the man fell.
- John, 6NM

YEAR 6 GEM

Gratitude

We are eternally grateful  to our parent helpers who are busily sewing costumes and constructing sets for our Year 6 Production.

Empathy

We are empathetic towards those students who are feeling hesitant or apprehensive about moving on to secondary school.

Mindfulness

With the arrival of spring, we are practising being mindful and living in the moment by getting out and spending time in nature when possible.

SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT

TERM THREE IN THE STEM ROOM

Get ready for an exciting adventure in the night sky!

During 2025 Science Week, we explored “Stories in the Sky,” where we decoded animal prints in the stars and discovered the fascinating constellations that have inspired cultures for thousands of years.

Using insights from the Awesome Emu book and Indigenous astronomy science, we uncovered how ancient stories and patterns connect us to the universe.

Join us for cosmic discovery, storytelling, and learning about the rich traditions that illuminate our understanding of the night sky!

Our prep students explored animal print decoding during their Digi tech classes. This skill, useful for hunting and caring for Country, has been used by First Nations Peoples for thousands of years and continues today.

Students also discovered how Indigenous astronomical knowledge connects to land, seasons, and cultural identity.

Through these activities, we learned to respect and value different ways of understanding the natural world.
