PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

On Monday, we had our curriculum day, whereby staff spent the day dissecting and unpacking the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0, a revised Mathematics curriculum that is coming into effect in 2025.

The annual Book Fair was a huge hit with all students visiting the library to view the books and literacy stock on sale. Thank you to the parents for your support with purchases and to the library team including our wonderful library captains.

The OSPS athletics team competed at the District Athletics at Duncan McKinnon Reserve. Our team was selected from the House Athletics day and we had representatives in all events and age groups. OSPS won the District Athletics shield and approximately 30 students will progress to region. Two OSPS students broke District Athletics records in three events, Elwyn in the long jump and Drewin in the 100 and 200 metres. Congratulations to all our athletes!

OAKLEIGH EDUCATION PLAN UPDATE

The work to deliver on the goals and objectives of the Oakleigh Education Plan (OEP) continues. The connections and collaboration between the leaders and teachers at our three schools, Oakleigh South Primary School, Huntingdale Primary School and South Oakleigh Secondary College are the hallmark of our shared mission to embed and sustain a connected learning precinct to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our students through their primary and secondary schooling and beyond.

As has been the case since its inception, the three key pillars of the OEP are STEM learning through Design Thinking, Japanese learning and pathways and Transition.

Teachers at all three schools are continuing to build their understanding and capabilities in design thinking which in is turn leading to more innovative, student centred and engaging classroom practice, not only in STEM but more broadly across the curriculum.

This includes key capabilities and competencies such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration, innovation and problem solving and student voice and agency. This also helps students to develop key dispositions such as belief in their abilities as learners, self-confidence, trying new ideas and being comfortable giving and receiving feedback to name a few.

Our Japanese teachers Community of Practice, which includes teachers from each of our three schools, have invested a lot of time and effort in refining the Y7 Japanese placement test, which helps identify the learning needs of students in Japanese as they transition from primary to secondary school. With SOSC offering a number of Japanese learning pathways as students enter year 7, the placement test provides key information to ensure students have the most appropriate supports and learning opportunities in their Japanese learning. Once again, very close and structured collaboration between our teachers is the key to the success of this initiative.

Learning walks, providing teachers an opportunity to visit one another’s classrooms and learn more about the different strategies, resources and approaches teachers are using is one approach to help ensure that as a learning precinct, we provide the best opportunities for our students. The next series of learning walks is being planned for Term 4.

Similarly, our Transition working group meets regularly and is currently focussed on the 2024-2025 years 6-7 transition program. Like all other groups within the OEP, the Transition working group brings together leaders and teachers from all three schools working together on transition as a shared priority and initiative. Whilst all schools will connect on some level as part of their normal transition activities, as members of the Oakleigh Education Plan, our school collaborates closely with our partner schools to ensure not only are the individual needs of students identified but the appropriate supports, strategies and resources are in place for students as they transition to secondary schooling. Intentional collaboration among teachers is essential in realising this aim.

Through our close collaborative practices and our connected learning precinct, our focus remains on sustaining and strengthening our connections as a learning precinct to benefit our students, teachers and community.

While the Oakleigh Education Plan officially concludes at the end of this year, all three schools are committed to sustaining our collaborative practices as a connected learning precinct into the future with a continued focus on Transition, STEM learning and design thinking and Japanese learning pathways. The OEP will continue be a priority into the future so that the work continues to be sustained as part of improvement priorities of each of our schools.

Classes are trying to make the longest coin line with prizes on offer so start bringing those coins in the last week! Last year we had a class do 21 metres! Can anyone beat that?

Parents are encouraged to attend our Footy Day Parade which will be on the junior oval. Prep-Year 2: session 1, Year 3-6: session 2. The longest kick competition might look a little different this year so keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks to Parent Group who are providing hot dogs at lunchtime. The hot dogs are $5 each. There will also be a plant-based option available for purchase along with a variety of juice boxes for $2. Great value!

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 4 SHOWCASE

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 4 THIS TERM?

MATHS:

Our students explored the fascinating world of numbers and shapes. They tackled fractions, decimals, and percentages, and investigated measurement concepts including capacity, mass, temperature, perimeter, area, and volume. Data collection and display also featured in their learning, helping them visualise and interpret information in new ways.

READING:

The Year 4s enhanced their reading skills by employing strategies such as making conclusions, summarising, and inferring. They examined and responded to literature, and analysed and evaluated various texts to deepen their understanding and enjoyment of reading. Their detective skills in literature were truly impressive!

WRITING:

Creativity flourished as the students crafted imaginative narratives, developed informative texts, and explored Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Their writing showcased their ability to express themselves in diverse and engaging ways.

SPELLING:

Our students worked on mastering tricky spelling patterns and sounds, including suffixes like ‘-ly,’ and special cases such as ‘ie’ in ‘chief’ and ‘-ure’ in ‘measure.’ They also tackled sounds like ‘y’ in ‘yawn’ and ‘ew’ in ‘screw,’ demonstrating their growing spelling expertise.

INTEGRATED STUDIES:

In Integrated Studies, Year 4s investigated the Olympic Games, learning about its history and significance. They also explored the rich culture and traditions of First Nations people, gaining a deeper appreciation for their important contributions to our history and society.

WELLBEING:

Our students have continued to engage with and enjoy their Resilience Project lessons, where they are instilling the pillars of gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness. These lessons have supported their emotional growth and helped them build a positive and supportive classroom environment.

It’s been a term full of growth and exploration for our Year 4 students, and we look forward to more exciting learning adventures ahead!

LITERACY CORNER

In their classroom writing lessons, the Year 4 students have enjoyed learning about and writing information reports. They had fun creating their own animals and then writing an information report about them. The students were conscientious about structuring their paragraphs correctly to ensure every detail was included.

‘Tento immediately got his phone out and was lucky enough to get a photo. He rushed to the science lab and showed the photo. Scientists realised that the creature had an iguana head and a dog’s body. They named the animal a Doguana.’

Matthew 4LW

‘An unusual creature has shown up out of the mist. It has aroused the interest of many people, and I must say this unique animal is fascinating and beyond amazing. Much like an owl, the Dream Catcher uses its pair of pearly white wings to swoop down from a tree to catch then eat its food. Its prey mainly consists of fish, small birds, mice and any insects that it finds on the ground.’

– Gwen 4LW

In group lessons, we have focused on the Seven Steps elements ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ and ‘Ban the Boring.’ These strategies have engaged the students, encouraging them to use all their senses to enhance descriptions and details, as well as to increase tension in their writing.

‘As I stepped out the warm breeze pushed against my face. I knew this day was going to be packed with excitement. “Get ready, you’re going to use heaps of energy today”, I told my legs. I had been waiting for this moment! As my legs pushed their weight into the ground, I glanced at the beautiful view of the mountains.’

Clover 4LW

‘I nervously gritted my teeth as Natalie stepped onto the stage and was nearly blinded by the illuminous disco ball reflecting the full moon’s bright twilight. “Um, Jeremy, I’m not sure if I can do this. I don’t trust you to catch me in our grand finale” she called out with a nervous glance on her face, looking out into the empty room.’

– Arthur 4AS

YEAR 4 GEM

The Year 4 students are grateful for the many celebrations they’ve enjoyed this term. Highlights included NAIDOC Week, Matsuri Day, Superhero Day, and Book Week. During NAIDOC Week activities, the students demonstrated compassion by empathising with the hardships endured by Indigenous cultures. They also recognised and celebrated the cultures and beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, acknowledging their importance in today’s society. The Year 4s, along with their families, put in great effort to prepare for all our dress-up day occasions. Everyone supported and praised each other’s costumes, showcasing wonderful creativity and individuality. The Year 4 cohort thoroughly enjoyed Adam Wallace’s Book Week presentation and participated enthusiastically in the illustration activity he led.

SPECIALIST SHOWCASE

STEM SHOWCASE

SCIENCE WEEK

Let us dive into the fascinating world of species and their survival! This year, we’re exploring the delicate balance of ecosystems, the incredible adaptations of wildlife, and the urgent efforts needed to protect endangered species.

It’s about understanding that we’re all part of the big, interconnected web of life. Every creature, from the bees that pollinate our fruit trees to the worms that enrich our soil, plays an essential part.

Their survival doesn’t just protect nature’s beauty, it ensures the health of the ecosystems that provide our food, clean water and the air we breathe.

Our students from Prep to Year 2 explored the tiny titans of our ecosystem—minibeasts! From the intricate world of ants and butterflies to the mysterious lives of spiders and beetles, as we explore the incredible roles these small but mighty creatures play in our environment. Through hands-on activities, we uncovered the secrets of their survival strategies, unique adaptations, and the vital contributions they make to our world.

Our Year 3-6 students delved into the fascinating topic of urbanisation and its environmental impact. They became “Eco Detectives” through an engaging Minecraft Education activity, where they explored sustainable solutions for urban development. The experience not only enhanced their understanding of ecological challenges but also sparked their creativity and problem-solving skills. It was a week full of discovery and innovation.
