PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
What a fantastic week we’ve had! A huge shoutout and congratulations to all the students who took part in the district athletics yesterday. You all did an amazing job, and we’re super proud that so many of you are moving on to represent OSPS at the regional level next term.
I’m really excited to share some great news about supporting our students’ mental health and wellbeing. We’re bringing in a live theatre performance for all students from Prep to Year 6. The show is called ‘Being Brave’ and it’s by Brainstorm Productions, one of Australia’s top educational theatre groups. Their shows are all about helping kids build resilience, make positive connections, and understand why it’s so important to be an upstander — someone who stands up to help others, so everyone feels safe and happy at school. The performances are as follows:
- Wednesday 3rd September: Year 1 & Year 2
- Thursday 4th September: Year 3 & Prep
- Friday 5th September: Year 4, 5 & 6
Also, just a reminder that our Parent Group will be running the annual Father’s and Special Person’s Day stall next Thursday and Friday. Thank you to the Parent Group for providing this opportunity for our students. The Prep children are especially excited to celebrate their dads or special person in their classrooms next Friday afternoon.
Ticket sales for the upcoming Year 6 production of Matilda Junior are now open from this morning for the whole school community.
- The Miracles Cast will take the stage on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th September, while The Angels Cast will be performing in the choir on those nights.
- The Angels Cast will perform on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th September, with The Miracles Cast in the choir.

SCHOOL MATTERS
DISTRICT ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Wow, what an incredible day it was for our Athletics team at Duncan McKinnon on Thursday! Overcast skies greeted schools from across the district for the annual District Carnival, and the track and field were buzzing with energy from start to finish.
The field events brought plenty to celebrate, with Sam H., Jack O., Taylani C., Adrian N. and Hugo L. all winning their respective events. A host of others also finished second, securing a place at Division.
The track is where our school truly shines, and this year was no exception. An incredible 17 students qualified for Division in their individual events, and every single relay team also made it through! These outstanding performances secured Oakleigh South first place overall, with the shield proudly accepted by our Athletics Captains Alwyn, Erika, Taylani and Oliver M., who delivered an excellent closing speech.
This victory marks 19 wins from the last 20 District Carnivals, which is an extraordinary achievement and a true testament to the strength of our program. For a zoned school, this record is simply remarkable.
We were also thrilled to see such strong parent support throughout the day. There is nothing better than watching a student give their absolute best with their family cheering them on, and even better, the encouragement extended to students from all schools, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
A huge thank you to Mr Mooney and Athletics Coach Miss Gunning, whose leadership and dedication make results like these possible. The program they run sets our students up to achieve their personal best, and the number of students heading to Division speaks for itself.
Special thanks also go to Mr Nugent and Mr Wintersea for supporting students between events, and to Miss Strugnell for her work behind the scenes, and our House Captains who helped out across the day.
Congratulations to everyone who participated, and best of luck to our students heading to Division. We could not be prouder!
Mr Morrey

STUDENT SHOWCASE
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 3…
In the village, each Year 3 class has planted their own garden beds: 3MW planted potatoes, 3AN planted snow peas, 3NM planted cucumbers, 3NH planted bok choy, and 3FT planted climbing beans.
We recently harvested a bumper crop of cauliflower and broccoli, cooking enough for all Year 3 students to enjoy fresh vegetables straight from our garden. Most students absolutely loved them! Our baby carrots have been especially popular with the children because of their delightful sweetness when freshly harvested.
Our enthusiastic student farmers have been diligently weeding the garden beds and feeding these weeds to our chooks, who transform them into delicious eggs. As the days grow longer, our ducks have also begun laying eggs, much to everyone’s excitement.
The team recently cleaned the duck ponds, observing with wonder how much the ducks enjoy fresh water and marvelling at the impressive waterproofing of their feathers.
Our students have also taken on roles as “environmental warriors,” collecting litter around the village and school to prevent it from washing into drains and ultimately polluting our beautiful bay.
Beyond gardening, our clever farmers have been sorting 10¢ recyclable containers from the purple recycling bins. These containers are taken to the recycling centre to raise valuable funds for our school.
Please continue to support our sustainability efforts by placing eligible bottles and cans into the purple bins located in the Year 3 area.
LITERACY CORNER
This term, we have been exploring the story “Matilda” by Roald Dahl and using it to help us become better narrative writers. We have been learning how to use sizzling starters to hook the reader right from the beginning, just like Roald Dahl does in his writing. We have also practised using dialogue to bring our characters to life and show how they feel or what they’re thinking.
To make our stories more exciting, we focused on building tension and using show not tell to describe emotions. For example, instead of simply stating a character is scared, we would show their hands shaking. We also worked on writing action paragraphs with strong verbs and clear descriptions to help readers visualise what’s happening in the story. Reading “Matilda” has helped us understand how authors create engaging and powerful narratives, and we’ve been applying these techniques in our own writing.
NUMERACY NOOK
In Maths, we have been learning to tell time to the nearest minute using both analogue and digital clocks. We’ve practiced reading and writing times such as quarter past, half past, and quarter to, while also developing our understanding of a.m. and p.m. Additionally, we’ve been solving time-related problems—calculating activity durations and determining future times after specific intervals. These skills help us apply time concepts to real-life situations and build confidence in our daily routines.
YEAR 3 GEM
Gratitude
We are grateful for World Book Day because we got to dress up as our favourite book characters, read with other year groups, and participate in fun reading activities. It demonstrated that reading can be enjoyable and exciting in numerous ways. We loved sharing stories with our friends and discovering new books we might not have otherwise chosen. The special events inspired us to use our imagination and explore different worlds through literature. Book Day reminded us how powerful and enjoyable reading can be, and it encouraged us to continue reading daily.
Empathy
We are learning about scarecrows as we prepare to make our own in class. Through this project, we’re developing empathy by considering how scarecrows might feel lonely standing outside all day by themselves. We’re exploring what a scarecrow might need from us to feel cared for—such as friendship and kindness. This helps us understand the importance of showing appreciation and being kind to others, even if they seem quiet or different.
Mindfulness
This week we are learning how to understand and express our emotions and how to handle challenges in a calm and kind way. Mindfulness helps us pause and consider how we are feeling – whether sad, angry, or worried – before we react. We’ve been practicing strategies like deep breathing, counting to ten, or talking to a trusted adult when facing difficulties. These tools help us stay calm, solve problems, and treat others with respect, even when things don’t go my way.
SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT
TERM THREE IN THE JUNIOR MUSIC ROOM
This term in Junior Performing Arts we have been busy performing, playing instruments, dancing in a hip hop style, and learning about Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing artists.
In Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 3, students have been listening to artists such as Emily Wurramara, Baker Boy and King Stingray. They have learnt about Australian First Nations instruments including the didgeridoo (Yidaki), bullroarers, rasp and clapsticks.
Preps have been learning a hip hop dance to Baker Boy’s song ‘In Control’.
From Prep to Grade 3, students have also been singing new and classic songs by Peter Combe. He will perform a concert for students in Term 4. We will share more details later this term.
In Grade 2, students have been very enthusiastic about production rehearsals. We cannot wait to share their show next term.
In Grade 3, classes 3NH, 3AN and 3FT have begun learning the recorder. Classes 3MW, 3WC and 3NM learnt recorder last semester and are now doing a unit on Music Futures with Mr Mietzcke.
I also want to commend our wonderful performers, both musicians and singers, who have shared their talents in class, in music exams and in competitions.
Congratulations to Masha W. from 3NH, who participated in the Monash Youth Festival in the Under 12 Junior Vocal section and received an Honourable Mention for ‘Naughty’ (Matilda). Masha also participated in the Eisteddfod by the Bay and received another Honourable Mention for ‘Naughty’, and was awarded 2nd place for her duet of ‘A Whole New World’.
Speaking of singing, Junior Choir is now open to students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 every Tuesday lunchtime at 1:00 PM in the Junior Music Room. New members are very welcome!
