FETE THANK YOU
Once again our Fete was a huge success and it was wonderful to see our community working together to achieve such great results. We have finally received the last of the invoices for the event and can now proudly tell you of the results!
The Fete would not be possible without our most generous sponsors and donors from local businesses and businesses from afar, friends and families. Thank you to our many special guests, community stalls and performance groups. Without your contribution the day would not have been possible. We hope to see you next year.
We also need to acknowledge our teaching and office staff for their dedication leading up to the Fete and on the day, especially to our Fete Coordinator Nikki Virtuoso and her amazing team of volunteer Fete Team parents.
Thank you to the many parents and volunteers who gave up their time before, during and after the fete to help in various ways. It is also wonderful to see many of our ex-parents and students offer assistance on or before the day.
The final figure was over $90,000, which is a tremendous effort considering the weather on the day.
We hope to see you next year! Thank you everyone!

ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
We are starting to see an increase in numbers of children becoming unwell with sniffles, cough, and sore throat.
If your child is displaying symptoms of being unwell – fever, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, tummy-ache, nausea, they are not well enough to come to school.
If you need to administer panadol or nurofen to your child before school, they are not well enough to come to school.
Student with highly contagious conditions like impetigo or “school sores”, conjunctivitis must not attend school until all symptoms are cleared, as per Department of Health requirements.
Please consider the health and wellbeing of other students and staff.
If your child develops any sign of illness whilst at school, we will request that you or an adult nominated by you, collect your child from school within an hour.
It is also timely to remind your child about hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue. Cough into your elbow, dispose of tissues into a bin, and wash hands regularly with soap and water, or use sanitizer.
Thank you for helping keep our school community safe.

STUDENT SHOWCASE
NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK – CELEBRATING INNOVATION
Throughout week 6, Oakleigh South Primary School celebrated National Science Week in all STEM lessons from Prep to Year 6. Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, the week features more than 1000 events around the country, showcasing the contributions of Australian scientists and the impact of science on our lives.
This year’s theme was Innovation: Powering Future Industries. As part of our National Science Week activities, our students explored the importance of innovation and how it can be fostered through some of the design thinking process.
The main project that our students worked on was creating their own innovative paper planes using a cardboard straw and paper. They followed some of the steps of design thinking, in particular, identifying their problem in order to make ‘THE BEST’ paper plane. By identifying whether the problem was about distance, speed or tricks, students came up with different designs to try and solve it. They then built and tested their prototypes, and refined their ideas based on the results.
Some of the innovative features that our students came up with were:
- Adding fins or wings to the straw
- Using different shapes and sizes of paper to create different flight patterns
- Cutting or folding the paper to create aerodynamic effects
Our students had a lot of fun experimenting with their paper planes, adapting innovative techniques and concepts to their planes. We are very proud of our students’ achievements and their enthusiasm for science and innovation. We hope that they will continue to explore and discover new possibilities in the future.
