PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

This week we said farewell to our Japanese host students from Tamba Higashi Primary School and what a way to say goodbye by the wonderful Matsuri dress up day on Tuesday and special whole school assembly. We thank the 6 OSPS host families who looked after our visitors very well and showed them a lovely time in Melbourne. Thank you to Sumiko Sensei and her team for all the efforts in organising such a terrific experience for the Japanese students, teachers and our school community.

On Wednesday the senior school participate in the House Athletics on site at OSPS. The huge day was very well organised and executed by the PE department supported by staff. Students all participated and had a great time competing in the variety of track and field events. The results from the House Athletics will form the District Athletics team who will compete against other schools in the coming weeks. Students will train at lunchtimes for their selected events.

This week OSPS had our Department of Education scheduled OHS audit, where representatives attend the school site to inspect all areas, look at our OHS compliance and registers. We have performed extremely well again and thanks to Erik Albers for leading the OHS at our school.

The Year 5 VSSS dance group has a mass dance rehearsal and attended another school this week, not long until they perform at Rod Laver Arena in September.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

SCHOOL MATTERS

IMPORTANT REMINDER: PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG

While we understand that some families may bring their dogs around our school grounds, it is crucial to keep our environment clean and safe for everyone. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Bring Your Own Waste Bags: Our school does not provide dog waste bags, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Dispose Properly: Always pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste in the appropriate bins. Proper disposal of dog waste helps maintain a clean and pleasant environment for all.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for everyone. For more information, please read our Dog Policy

SUPERHIRO DRESS UP DAY

On Wednesday the 14th August, the whole school will be recognising the ‘National Week Against Bullying and Violence’ 12th to 16th August,  by dressing up as their favourite Superhero. We will be promoting and instilling once again, the importance of being an UPSTANDER and being kind and inclusive of everyone.

The theme for 2024 is ‘Everyone Belongs’, when we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It’s about embracing who we are, respecting everyone’s differences and standing up together against unkindness. At OSPS we encourage our students to speak up to create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

OLYMPIC SPIRIT IS ALIVE IN YEAR 5!

This term, our Year 5 students have been embracing the Olympic spirit through a range of engaging activities. They started by designing their own hexagonal Olympic Stadiums, calculating the area and perimeter of each section using various shapes and formulas.

Next, they created unique Olympic flags, incorporating the colours representing the continents and symbols that reflect the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.

To top it all off, our Year 5s showcased their athleticism and sportsmanship during the House Athletics event, demonstrating true Olympic spirit!

WRITING IN YEAR 5

The Year 5 classrooms have been fine tuning their writing skills and have finished off the term with a persuasive Big Write.

A Big Write is the chance for the students to celebrate their writing and show off the learning goals they have achieved over the last month. They learn how to up-level their work and create a ‘writer’s voice’ by using their VCOP skills (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation).

The writing topic was ‘Our Planet is Dying’ and the atmosphere was very different to a normal writing session; calming/soothing music is played, relaxing candles are on the tables, a little bit of popcorn & a treat to snack on, along with dictionaries and VCOP resources.

When our writing is finished, we then complete a Big Edit with a partner. We focus on highlighting our VCOP skills, giving constructive feedback and set a new writing goal for next term.

The students have produced some amazing writing and reflected that the Big Write was the ‘best’ writing lesson they’ve ever had! We can’t wait for the next Big Write!

YEAR 5 GEM

EMPATHY is the ability to understand how people are feeling. The Year 5 students reflected on what empathy means to them and how they show empathy towards others.

Here are some easy ways you can practice empathy every day:

Actively Listen: Pay close attention when someone is talking to you. Ask questions and really try to understand their point of view.
Put Yourself in Their Shoes: Imagine what it would be like to be in the other person’s situation. This helps you understand their feelings and respond kindly.
Show Understanding and Validation: Let people know you understand and support their feelings. This makes them feel heard and valued.
Practice Empathy Daily: You don’t need a big reason to be empathetic. Be kind to everyone, like a cashier, a friend, or a family member. It can make a big difference and make you feel better too.
Be a Role Model: Show empathy to others and encourage your friends to do the same. When you lead by example, others will follow.

Empathy is a powerful way to connect with others and make our school a happier place for everyone!
