PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last Thursday the House Athletics carnival was held in beautiful, sunny conditions. The children embraced the day with great enthusiasm and were seen proudly wearing their place ribbons after their events. Congratulations to all the students that competed and showed wonderful sportsmanship and a big thank you to all the staff who organised and supported the events on the day.

Yesterday we had the senior assembly where the OSPS school band performed, and what a performance it was. Thank you to Mr Mietzcke, Mrs Barnard, Mr Davey, and Mr Whittaker for their time to teach and coordinate the band during lunchtimes. We look forward to more performances during the year.

Work on the replacement of Year 1 windows and doors is in progress now. The year 1 grades will each take their turn to work from the old senior music room while their windows are being replaced. Look out for an email from your classroom teacher letting you know when its their turn to vacate for a couple of days.

This week the year 3 and 4 students are participating in their 5-day swimming program at GESAC, with years 5 and 6 having their turn next week. Thank you to Mr Albers for the organisation of this program which promotes the health and wellbeing of those students who attend, and thanks to the teachers and parents who support this important program each day.

Enjoy a great week.

SCHOOL MATTERS

PUPIL FREE DAY

We will be having a pupil free day on Monday 14th August.

The day will be centred around Health and Wellbeing with all staff being involved in updating their skills in CPR and training in Anaphylaxis procedures.

We will also be having professional learning in the curriculum area of Resilience, Right and Respectful Relationships (RRRR’s) which is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum and a session on The Resilience Project.

More details will follow regarding the out of school hours care program for that day.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE

On Friday 18 August 2023, OSPS will officially be taking part in NDA Day 2023. We will be promoting and instilling once again, the importance of being an UPSTANDER and being kind and inclusive of everyone. To recognise this, there will be a whole school Superhero Dress Up event on this day. Students can dress up as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, truck drivers, emergency service people, mum or dad, or grandma to celebrate who their hero is. The options are endless!!

If your child prefers to not dress up, they can wear something orange.

The theme for the 2023 NDA is Growing Connections.  Help us to create positive action by growing connections with all our students, school staff and our communities for Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative by joining our school community to say … Bullying. No Way! Oakleigh South Primary will be taking a united stand with more than 6,500 other Australian schools in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). The NDA promotes the importance of school, family, and community connections in building safe and supportive learning environments where all students can belong, feel accepted and respected.

BOOK WEEK AT OSPS

This term OSPS will be celebrating Book Week on the 25th of August. On Friday the 25th, we ask that students come dressed as their favourite character from a book. Students will be asked to bring a gold coin donation which will go towards purchasing new books for the school library.

Junior school students will have their parade at 9am in the hall and Senior school students will partake in their parade at 9:50. Parents are welcome to attend these parades.

Similar to last year, Book Week Dress Up day will be filled with fun-filled book related activities for the students to participate in throughout the day.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION

The Year 6 Production of The Wizard of Oz is moving along at tornado speed!

The students have been working hard and we’ve now moved on to the next phase with ensemble cast joining the main characters at rehearsals.

Lots of singing and dancing is taking place from Munchkinland to the Emerald City!

Costumes are being tried on and props are busily being made.

On the weekends, our amazing parent helpers along with some students, have been constructing and painting sets for the show.

We appreciate their help so much proving that teamwork makes the dream work!

Not long to go now, so make sure you get your tickets to this bright and colourful production – well, bright and colourful once we leave Kansas that is!

Tickets will be on sale later this term – watch this space!

YEAR 6 BUSINESS EXPO

During terms two and three, the Year 6 students to put their entrepreneurial hats on and worked in groups to create their very own businesses. Using the Design Thinking process, students came up with unique ideas to appeal to their peers and adults alike.

Business meetings were held and businesses promoted themselves via their very own professional looking websites! The project culminated in Business Expo day, when each business showcased their products and services to eager customers – fellow students, parent and teachers.

Advertising and presentation had to be just right to entice customers to the stalls and thorough bookkeeping was necessary to track all transactions. The Economics unit taught our Year 6s many skills they can take into the future and was a fun, hands on way to learn about the highs and lows of the business world.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

YEAR 6 GEM

The Year 6s have been hard at work but have also taken the time to pause and reflect during their last year at OSPS.

Gratitude (G)- We are grateful for our amazing parent helpers who are working tirelessly to assist with our production preparation.

Empathy (E)- We are empathetic towards those students who, despite their greatest efforts,  just missed out on making the Athletics team. Be proud of your effort!

Mindfulness (M)- In Lesson 13 in our Resilience Project journal we are encouraged to ‘look at what we have’. There is so much for us to be appreciative of which can help us when we are experiencing negative thoughts.

YEAR 6 LITERACY CORNER

In Writing Groups, Year 6 students have been introduced to essay writing in preparation for secondary school. We analysed and responded to the short story/film ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan, discussing symbolism, colour and themes, using evidence to support our explanations. It’s been interesting to delve into another world and examine the use of language and imagery in depth.

‘The Lost Thing proves that the demise of hope not only exists in that dystopian grey empire, but in our world, our Earth and our lives.’ Nikola 6SC

‘People in ‘The Lost Thing’ have lost all creativity and are living tedious and monotonous lives which they do not want disrupted, as shown in the advertisement for the Department of Odd and Ends. They identify anything unique as bad as it upsets the order of their lives. No matter what the circumstance, they will always be following signs and orders, even at their own expense.’   Nick  6CM

‘If you observe closely, you’ll see that Shaun Tan had added ‘false hope’ in almost every scene.’  Lilly 6SM
