PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It has been a long and busy 11-week term at OSPS, and I’m sure all of our families and staff are looking forward to a well-earned break.
School reports will be available in Compass for parents today. These reports reflect your child’s academic and social-emotional progress, along with strategies for future learning and how this can be supported at home.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 22nd July. Please check Compass for details and to make your bookings.
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the Year 4 production of The Jungle Book Kids.
The students lit up the stage with their vibrant costumes, expressive makeup, and incredible performances in singing, dancing, and acting—truly transporting the audience deep into the jungle!
A heartfelt thank you to the entire Year 4 production team for their outstanding efforts in direction, choreography, lighting, vocals, costuming, backstage coordination, program design, and prop creation.
Special thanks also to all OSPS staff who continue to give their time, talent, and energy to make these events so successful. And of course, a big thank you to all the parent helpers—your ongoing support is deeply appreciated and never goes unnoticed.
On Wednesday, we were proud to host the VSSS Mass Dance practice in our school hall. It was a fantastic opportunity to welcome dancers from across our region as they came together to rehearse with the official VSSS dance trainers.
Important Reminder:
- Start of Term 3: Monday 21st July is a Curriculum Day—no students are required at school. Staff will be undertaking professional learning on the new Literacy 2.0 curriculum.
Wishing all our OSPS families a restful and safe holiday break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term!

NAIDOC WEEK 2025 AT OSPS
Over the next two weeks and into Term 3, students at Oakleigh South Primary School will have the opportunity to come together to learn and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and the achievements of Australia’s First Nations People.
This year marks a significant milestone — 50 years of NAIDOC Week, honouring the voices, culture, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” celebrates the achievements of the past while looking forward with hope and pride to a future led by empowered young leaders.
An interesting fact: Oakleigh South Primary School is situated on two lands, representing both the Bunurong and Wurundjeri people.
In support of NAIDOC Week, we will be selling:
- Wristbands for $3.50
- Mini balls for $4.00
- Key chains for $4.00
Should you wish for your child to purchase any of these items, please send them to school with correct money (cash only). Student Voice representatives will be selling these items throughout the next two weeks.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we learn and work, and pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging.

SPECIAL SCHOOL TV REPORT: CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK
As the end of the school term looms, so do the impending celebrations for NAIDOC Week. This is an important time to recognise and celebrate indigenous history and culture. NAIDOC celebrations will occur during the school holidays between 6-13th July and this week-long event helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, enabling a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities.
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities and is a great opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together.

STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS
We are proud to announce that Jack O. and Koby P., from Grade 5, have qualified to compete at the State Cross Country Championships on Thursday 24th July at Yarra Glen Racecourse!
On Wednesday 18th June, Jack and Koby travelled to Hastings Foreshore to represent OSPS in the Under 11 Boys’ 3km race at the Regional Cross Country event. Despite challenging weather—with icy winds and coastal cold—the boys gave it their all, showing true resilience and sportsmanship.
Jack ran an outstanding race to place 6th overall, with Koby not far behind in 11th place — a remarkable achievement in a highly competitive field. Their results have earned them a place among the state’s best young distance runners.
We are incredibly proud of their dedication, perseverance, and the way they represented our school. Congratulations Jack and Koby—your OSPS community is behind you all the way, and we wish you all the best at State!

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
Since 2022, OSPS has partnered with The Resilience Project to support student wellbeing from Foundation to Year 6 through the Inspire Program. The curriculum, designed by teachers for teachers, aligns with Victorian and Australian Curriculum standards in Personal and Social Capabilities and Health and Physical Education.
The program focuses on four key strategies to build resilience and happiness:
-
- Gratitude: The act of being thankful and appreciating what you have in life.
- Empathy: The capacity to understand and feel what another person is feeling.
- Mindfulness: The practice of attention regulation.
- Emotional Literacy: The ability to understand and express our feelings.
Each week, students participate in formal lessons and complete entries in their Resilience Student Journals. Activities include gratitude posters, mindfulness colouring, and emotion-matching exercises. As a Partnership School, OSPS integrates The Resilience Project’s wellbeing curriculum across the whole school community.
There are many ways to support your child’s mental health at home.

STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 4 SHOWCASE
Our talented Year 4 students have spent the term singing, dancing, acting and rehearsing tirelessly to bring The Jungle Book Kids to life on stage.
From learning lines and choreography to building confidence and teamwork, every student has played an important role in creating a vibrant, joyful performance.
Their dedication, creativity and enthusiasm have truly shone through and we couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved. Well done, Year 4!
LITERACY CORNER
This semester, our Year 4 students have immersed themselves in a wide range of learning experiences – from starring in The Jungle Book Kids to exploring writing, maths, excursions, STEM, and buddy activities. Below, a few students share their personal highlights, proudest achievements, and what they’re most looking forward to next term:
This semester in Year 4, I have enjoyed practising for the Year 4 production of The Jungle Book. It is so fun and intriguing, and it makes me sing all the production songs at home all the time, which to my delight annoys my brother greatly. I have also really enjoyed my writing, maths and Digital Technologies assignments and activities.
My achievements have been surviving Cross Country and auditions, as well as meeting, playing with and teaching my two fabulous prep buddies, Zara and Lauren.
I have improved at almost everything that I have practised at school, which is, to me, a spectacular (gosh, I love that word!) accomplishment.
Next semester, I really look forward to proper music lessons, swimming, “Mission to Mars” bars and finding out who my Grade 5 teacher is. (Wow, I grow quickly).
This semester in Year 4 has been amazing because I enjoyed doing fun activities like Writer’s Toolbox, Reading Groups plus going to excursions like the MCG and Eureka Tower. I have also enjoyed getting to know my buddy and writing a story for him. It has been a blast!
My achievements have been getting better at writing thanks to Writer’s Toolbox which has improved my writing from good to excellent.
I have improved at playing cricket by practising and practising. I have also improved my maths by listening to everything in class that will help me to get better.
Next semester I am looking forward to getting my pen licence, going swimming and also playing cricket outside.
This semester was amazing although I did have a few standouts! My friends and I enjoy playing games with our buddies on Mondays and Fridays. They’re all so adorable, cheerful and silly. We have an absolute blast together and I hope for more activities with them next semester. It was delightful practising the production, singing with friends and I didn’t even miss my cues. I had a wonderful time watching my other besties act as some of the main characters. The long excursion to Eureka Tower and the MCG was sooooo high I felt really dizzy (especially for someone who hates heights!) The altitude was harsh, but I enjoyed looking through the safe unbreakable glass. I felt tiny compared to the huge MCG. It was fun too and I loved the exhibition.
I think that my hard work has seen me towards a great semester where I have gotten three certificates for hard work and a good story, another one for reaching platinum in Mathletics and a final one for a splendid picture of one of the main characters in The Jungle Book (Baloo). I boosted my reading level up by stretching my skills to the limit. I think my target is too high for me but I could perhaps make fifty by the end of the term!
I think I have improved in writing information reports. When we worked on our magical new animal reports, I found out that writing reports is much easier if you just do a little more homework to study the fascination a bit more so that you won’t spend your report writing time just researching on the computers. I reckon my handwriting has really improved but I still need to take my time when writing on paper (I’m working on it!). The pressure on netball has pushed me to become fitter and faster. I tried quite hard and that saw me being in the highest new team, the Sapphires!
Next semester I’m looking forward to playing with my new netball team as well as working more on new writing types like procedures and recounts. I’m excited for the Mission to Mars and Rube Goldberg projects and swimming. I’ll work on my breaststroke and butterfly and I am excited to swim with my friends. But what I’m mostly excited about is learning a better drawing style. Drawing is my absolute passion and I love to make new realities on paper. In conclusion I am thrilled for next semester!
This semester in Year 4 I have enjoyed Ice Cream Day and Prep Buddies. Those are just some of the things I enjoyed but there are even more. For example the Autumn Fete was probably one of my favourite things in the entire world. I have also enjoyed having Miss Gunning as my teacher. She is one of the best teachers in the whole of Year 4 if not the best. I have also enjoyed making new classmates. My new classmates encourage me to try things that are really hard.
My achievements have been very rewarding. I reached my AR goal in both terms and I’m proud of getting the “Old Monkey” role in the production. I’m also proud of coming 4th in cross country practice.
I have improved in many areas like algebra. At first, I didn’t know what algebra was but now I’m a pro. I can solve things like x + y = 15 or (2)(5). I also want to share that my fitness level has improved a lot. I could barely run 500 metres before but now I can run 2.5 km in about 15 minutes.
Next semester I am excited to go to Healesville Sanctuary but the best thing will be getting my pen licence. When I get my pen licence I will be very excited!
This semester in Year 4 I have enjoyed practising for the Year Four production The Jungle Book Kids because acting (in my opinion) is quite fun. The excursion to the MCG and the Eureka Tower was also awfully fun. I could see the whole of Melbourne from the Eureka Tower. I have also enjoyed Writer’s Toolbox. In Writer’s Toolbox we learn new devices to add to our writing to make it better.
My achievements have been boosting up my A.R. targets quite high. My first target was 200 points and I exceeded it and my second target was 180 points and I exceeded it again. Another achievement of mine is that I have made new friends this year.
I have improved at my Writer’s Toolbox. I have started to understand how to use a lot of writing devices in my writing pieces. I also believe that I have become better at my handwriting because I can properly read my writing tasks.
Next semester I am looking forward to earning my pen licence, attending the Healesville Sanctuary excursion and Mission to Mars. I am excited to go to Healesville Sanctuary because I love animals.

Year 4 has been a blast and a wonderful experience! I liked the production because I got the role of Wolf 6. I really enjoyed our excursion to the MCG and Eureka Tower. I loved seeing the city from above (even though it was very scary!) and picking the grass at the MCG. STEM was a lot of fun because I got to make games and music. I also enjoyed swimming because I got to have fun with my best friends and I’m really looking forward to tennis next semester. I loved chess because it helped me calm down and relax from school. One area I want to improve in is writing. I need to use more advanced vocabulary to make my writing more interesting and fun. I also really enjoyed using Writer’s Toolbox during computer time. It was so much fun! I’m looking forward to our trip to Healesville Sanctuary next term.
YEAR 4 GEM
Gratitude
Year 4 students have shown genuine appreciation for everyone involved in The Jungle Book Kids, including teachers, parents and classmates. They have taken the time to say thank you and recognise the effort that goes into creating something special as a team.
Empathy
During rehearsals, students supported one another with kind words, encouragement and understanding. Whether it was helping a friend remember a line or calming nerves before going on stage, their care for each other has been inspiring.
Mindfulness
Students practised being present in the moment by listening carefully during rehearsals, focusing on their roles and reflecting on feedback. Their calm and centred approach helped make the performance a success and showed true awareness of themselves and others.
