PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

On Wednesday and Thursday nights we saw two spectacular performances from the Year 4 students. What a fun and vibrant show!! All students played their parts so well and I’m sure if you were a parent or family member watching, you would have been so proud.

Thank you to all the staff and parents who were involved in giving this wonderful opportunity to the students and congratulations to all the Year 4 children… you were amazing!

The week has been full of exciting events. The Year 1 students enjoyed their Planetarium Incursion, while the Year 3 students took part in a Jump Rope for Heart Day and had their excursion to Chesterfield Farm, and of course the fantastic Year 4 production was enjoyed by all.

As we come to the end of a very busy and long term, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and restful break. As always, encourage your child to continue to read over the holidays and log on to Mathletics and Reading Eggs too!

All students return to school on Monday 15th July.

Enjoy the holidays.

SCHOOL MATTERS

OSPS FROG NAMING COMPETITION RESULTS

This term our Sustainability Captains ran a Frog Naming Competition to name our two Green Tree Frogs.

Each class submitted their favourite names for our two green tree frogs, and our Sustainability Captains randomly selected the names via a lucky dip.

Congratulations to our winners: Prep FG and Grade 4LD!

Prep FG named our dark green frog Beanie
Grade 4LD named our light green frog Lime

Our winning classes received a Freddo Frog each and a little class frog statue to display in their classrooms.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our competition!

NAIDOC WEEK MERCHANDISE

Dear Parents and Community Members,

We are thrilled to announce that Oakleigh South Primary School will be celebrating NAIDOC Week (2nd-9th July) before and after the school holidays. This special week is dedicated to recognising and celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Join Us in the Celebration!

To help commemorate this important event, we will be selling unique items that symbolise our support and appreciation for Indigenous culture:

  • Mini Squishy Footballs $3: Perfect for fun and play, these footballs are not only enjoyable but also serve as a reminder of the significance of NAIDOC Week.
  • High-Quality Keyrings $4: These beautifully designed keyrings are a great way to show your support and keep a piece of this special week with you always.

Let’s come together to honour the rich cultural heritage and the many contributions of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Student voice reps will be visiting each classroom next week (the last week of Term 2) and the first week back in Term 3.

Thank you for your support!

All applications and supporting documents must be submitted by Friday 26th July 2024. This is in line with the new statewide Prep enrolment timeline, introduced by the Department of Education.

NEW DOG POLICY AT OSPS

We would like to announce that OSPS have updated our Dog Policy to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Due to concerns about allergies and fears among some students, dogs will no longer be allowed inside school buildings. This decision was carefully reviewed and approved by our Leadership Team and School Council to prioritise student welfare and safety.

For more details, please refer to the full policy here.

Thank you for your cooperation.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

SCHOOL COUNCIL TERM 2 UPDATE

The OSPS School Council have had a productive term.  We have been able to move our council meetings back inside the newly refurbished main office building this term as the building works continue to progress. We also welcomed new Council Member Rajkumar Karunanidhi.

On May 11, the school community came together to celebrate another highly successful Autumn Family Fete. School Council members joined forces with Parent Group to manage the hall kitchen. It was rewarding to see so many school families participating in the fun on the day and supporting the school. At our following Council meeting we spent time reviewing the fete to acknowledge what worked well and brainstorming what learnings can be taken to make our 2025 fete even better. School Council would also like to recognise Parent Group for running many follow up events, such as Hot Dog Day and Milkshake Day to ensure all excess fete stock was enjoyed by students.

School Council have recently reviewed and endorsed the ‘School Strategic Plan for 2024-2028’ following the completion of the 4 yearly review by the Department of Education.  The plan sets out the school’s philosophy, goals, and targets to improve student outcomes and the strategies it plans to use for achieving those targets. This is a significant body of work and we thank all staff for their hard work and input to complete the plan.

As Term 2 draws to a close, the OSPS Council send our best wishes to all school families for a restful break.

Thank you and kind regards,

Melissa Clubb

STUDENT SHOWCASE

STEM SHOWCASE

PREP

This semester the Prep students have been investigating the concept of living things and their basic needs, including food, water, and air. They have also explored the different characteristics of the life stages in animals, Minibeasts.

YEAR 1

The Year 1 students have been exploring how natural materials are made into resources, and can be featured to undergo change.  They have completed collaborative problem-solving activities related to food chemical science, such as designing and conducting simple experiments to investigate chemical and physical changes in food.

YEAR 2

The Year 2 students had the opportunity through hands on investigations to learn about the lifecycles of a mealworm and a bean plant.

YEAR 3

The Year 3 students have been investigating what goes into producing and preparing healthy food and all the things we can do to avoid food waste.

YEAR 4

Year 4 students have been exploring how light travels and enables our eyes to see.  They have also been investigating the reflection, absorption, and refraction of light, and researching Earth and how natural and manmade events influence change.

YEAR 5

The Year 5’s have been investigating and experimenting to see how living things (animals, plants, bacteria, and humans) adapt in everyday life.  They have explored different living things that have structural features and how they adapt to survive in their environment.

YEAR 6

Year 6’s explored the concept of change, that is, a material or object can be reversible (e.g. melting, freezing, evaporating), or irreversible (e.g. burning and rusting). Students had the opportunity to pose their own scientific question related to the concept of chemical change, and to investigate in groups.
