As we move towards the end of another busy and successful term, there is plenty happening across our school community.

Our Year 4 students held their dress rehearsals this week as they prepare for their production of Finding Nemo Kids. We are all looking forward to seeing their hard work come to life on stage next week. Performances will be held on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June at 6:30pm in the school hall. We encourage all families to come along and enjoy what promises to be a fun and entertaining show. There’s still time to purchase tickets, so be sure to head to TryBooking to secure your seats.

Mid-year student reports will be sent home via Compass on Friday 26th June. These reports provide valuable insight into your child’s progress and achievements so far this year. We encourage families to take the time to celebrate successes and discuss learning goals with their children.

Looking ahead to Term 3, we will be holding Parent-Teacher Meetings on Wednesday 15th July. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s learning progress and goals for the remainder of the year. More information about booking a meeting time will be shared via Compass in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, our House Athletics Day will be held at school for students in Years 3–6. Students are welcome to wear their house t-shirt or a t-shirt in their house colour. We warmly invite parents, carers and grandparents to attend as spectators and support our students throughout the day. As always, we remind everyone to uphold our school values and abide by the sporting code of conduct when cheering on participants. We are looking forward to a fantastic day of competition, participation and house spirit. The OSPS Athletics Squad will be selected from the competitors on the day.

Next Friday, we will come together for our final whole-school assembly for the term at 1:50pm. This is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate achievements and acknowledge the efforts and successes of our students.

Please also remember that school will finish early at 2:30pm next Friday as we conclude the term and begin the school holidays.

As we approach the end of another successful term, I wish all students, staff and families a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 13th July.

Wishing our community a lovely weekend!

Warm regards,

Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 4?

This term in Year 4, students have been busy rehearsing for our production of Finding Nemo Kids. Throughout the term, they have worked hard to learn songs, lines and choreography, showing great enthusiasm and commitment. It has been wonderful to watch students grow in confidence as they developed their performance skills and brought the characters and underwater world of Finding Nemo to life.

Rehearsals have provided many opportunities for students to strengthen their teamwork, resilience and communication skills. Students have supported one another, practised regularly and demonstrated a positive attitude as they prepared for the performances. The show’s message to “Just Keep Swimming” has been reflected in the determination students have shown when learning new routines and overcoming challenges.

Our students are looking forward to performing next Wednesday and Thursday evening at 6:30pm. Tickets are still available, and we encourage families and friends to come along and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic show.

LITERACY CORNER

In Year 4, students have been focusing on persuasive writing. They have been learning how to strengthen their arguments by incorporating a range of persuasive devices, such as emotive language, rhetorical questions and strong supporting reasons. Through this, students are developing their ability to write in a way that is both engaging and convincing for their audience.

Did you know that teaching students neat handwriting limits their creativity? They spend a long time worrying about their handwriting that they forget how to write their story. It is of course important that people can read their writing, however, it isn’t that important that you have to have sessions of handwriting over and over again.

by Daniel, 4CR

“Mum! Where did you put my school uniform?” I complained. “Can’t we just choose our own casual clothes?”. It’s so boring just wearing plain old bottle green clothes. Teachers always say to put detail into our writing, but why can’t we put detail into our clothes?”. Okay, listen up and I’ll blow your mind!

by Mika, 4CG

Imagine swimming in the ocean and seeing more rubbish than fish! If we don’t stop throwing plastic bags away, they will continue to end up in storm water drains and as a result will cease the existence of all our precious marine life. We definitely don’t want this!

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT – LESSON OF THE WEEK:

This term in our Resilience Project (TRP) lessons, Year 4 students have been learning about understanding and managing anger. Students explored how anger is a normal emotion and discussed the different ways it can affect our thoughts, feelings and actions. Through class discussions and activities, students learned strategies to recognise when they are becoming angry and how to respond in a calm and respectful way.

A key focus has been the Catastrophe Scale, which helps students identify the size of a problem and match their reaction to the situation. Students practised distinguishing between small, medium and large problems and considered whether their response was appropriate for the challenge they were facing. This learning has supported students in developing emotional regulation skills, building resilience and making positive choices when faced with difficult situations.

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT – GEM

Gratitude:
The Year 4 students are incredibly grateful to the many parents and teachers who have supported our Finding Nemo Kids production by creating costumes, props and sets. Their generosity and hard work have helped bring the show to life and made the experience even more special for our students.

Empathy:

As the busy end of term approaches, Year 4 students have continued to show empathy by supporting and encouraging their classmates. They have demonstrated understanding that everyone learns and works at different paces and have celebrated each other’s efforts and achievements.

Mindfulness:

Year 4 students have shown mindfulness throughout rehearsals by listening carefully, following instructions and giving performers their full attention. Their respectful and considerate behaviour has helped create a positive environment where everyone feels confident and valued.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN DIGITECH?

In Year 2…

Year 2 students began the term by creating PowerPoint presentations linked to their inquiry into the past, present and future. Focusing on children’s games, they developed their research skills by gathering information, retrieving images and using keyboard shortcuts to enhance their presentations.

Later in the term, students explored Ozbot robots, integrating their learning with measurement concepts such as centimetres and millimetres while developing their critical thinking skills. Working collaboratively in pairs, they applied Design Thinking strategies to create a two-player Ozbot game. Students then produced a PowerPoint presentation explaining the setup and rules of their game, showcasing both their creativity and growing digital literacy skills.

IN YEAR 4

During Term 2, Year 4 students engaged in a variety of coding activities, including programming LEGO Spike robots, mixing soundtracks in Music Lab and creating projects using Scratch. Across all of these activities, students applied their creativity and problem-solving skills by using block-based coding palettes to complete a range of challenges and tasks.

Students successfully programmed and raced LEGO Spike robots, created imaginative remixes of popular songs in Music Lab, and designed their own interactive games in Scratch. These experiences helped develop their computational thinking, creativity and confidence in using digital technologies.

IN YEAR 6

Early in the term, Year 6 students explored how images are represented using binary code. Through the use of programming languages such as Python and Java, they further developed their understanding of these concepts and gained valuable experience in coding. Students also participated in a range of activities using Code.org, along with code interpretation challenges that strengthened their computational thinking and problem-solving skills.

Towards the end of the term, the focus shifted to the Year 6 Business Expo. Working collaboratively in teams, students learned how to design and create websites to promote their products. By applying Design Thinking strategies, they empathised with their target audience and carefully defined the content and layout of their websites before bringing their ideas to life through creative design. This process encouraged innovation, teamwork and effective communication while developing valuable digital technology skills.
