PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we near the end of term 2, I reflect on what a busy term it was. Starting with the new Year 6 area being open, its great to see the students well settled into their lovely new space. The building works are continuing in the administration area and the year 2 wing is having its windows and doors replaced and new cladding on the outside walls. There have been excursions, incursions, sports, and lots of learning. To top the term off, the Year 4 production of ‘Splash’ begins tonight, with the final show being on Thursday.

Tickets will be available for sale at the door if you haven’t already reserved yours. From all reports it’s a spectacular show full of colour and fun and the year 4 students are very excited about performing for family and friends.

Thank you to the staff and parents who met yesterday to discuss their child’s first semester report. This time is always a great opportunity to touch base, especially for those parents who can’t always get to the school regularly.

Unfortunately our new car park isn’t progressing at the rate expected, with the Department, VSBA and Monash City Council still finalising the project scope. We have been working with all parties for a long while and did anticipate this project would have commenced by now. However due to these delays, we will arrange for some additional gravel to be spread across the surface of the carpark during the school holidays.

Finally, those of you going away for the holidays I wish you safe travels and for everyone else I hope you enjoy a safe and restful break. I look forward to seeing everyone returning for the start of term 3 on Monday 10th July.

Have a great holiday break.

Ron

SAFETY AT OSPS

A friendly reminder to encourage parents and children to be safe when on and moving off our school grounds. Please read and follow the below safety measures to ensure we have a safe and risk-free environment at OSPS:

  • If you are using the parent car park, please meet you child at the fence. This reduces risk as some students have been walking/running through the car park unsupervised.
  • Parents are reminded that they should not be using the staff car park to drop off/pick up children at school. For those families who drop off or pick up their child from Camp Australia, you have been directly notified by Camp Australia where to predominantly park (that is the parent car park and Riley Street) and what do in cases of bad weather or emergency.
  • The library corridor is only to be accessed if student’s are borrowing books or have Chess Club. Please do not access it to pick up your child. This corridor will be blocked off in the coming weeks as the builders continue works in the admin wing.
  • Please note the student hall toilets are for students only, if parents need to use the bathroom, please ask at the office to use the staff toilets.

Together we can support our children to have a safe and enjoyable time at OSPS.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 6 ECONOMICS UNIT

This term, as part of our Economics unit, we started a project called Business Expo. As part of this project, we must create a successful business to fundraise money for Year 6 events.

We each donate $5 which is exchanged for 50c tokens to treat ourselves to the goods and services at other students’ stalls. The assignment consists of many parts and started by learning about the design thinking process which helped us generate ideas for our stall.

This process begins with empathising with the customer to ensure the stall we create will appeal to them. Each group then brainstormed potential ideas for businesses and once the group had decided on an idea, we began building prototypes of products or games and testing them out.

We have also learnt how to build a website for our business, create an advertisement and calculate expenditure to work out how many sales we need to make a profit. Business Expo helps us prepare for the future, as well as having heaps of fun. Early in Term 3, we will hold our Business Expo and we hope all the Year 6 teachers, students and parents love the businesses we have created. Stay tuned for more information and photos next term when we reflect on how the day went!

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION REHEARSALS

Everyone is very excited for our upcoming production, ‘The Wizard Of Oz’. We have started gathering in the hall during Performing Arts sessions to practise songs and also learn some choreography.

The main characters have begun rehearsing and have written backstories of their characters to better understand them.  Every time we enter the hall for rehearsal we must understand our character, feel like them and be like them.

We are also learning many elements of performance like projecting our voice and not blocking other actors. Many more rehearsals will take place next term along with costume making and set building with the big show hitting the stage in the last week of Term 3. Keep your eyes open for when tickets are released because it is going to be a spectacular show!

LITERACY CORNER

YEAR 6 LITERACY CORNER

Year 6 Slam Poetry

Earlier in the term, the Year 6’s held their annual Slam Poetry competition. Slam poetry is a form of poetry that combines the elements of performance, writing, competition, and audience participation. Our Year 6 students put their best foot forward and gave it everything with some very powerful poems on topics affecting our youth. Congratulations to Nikola and Panagiotis who took out first place and to our runners up Leah, Nick and Aiden. Below is an excerpt from Nikola’s much longer slam poem on the beauty myth.

The devil’s creation. If it goes horribly wrong she will lose all self esteem, wanting to look like a beauty queen on the cover of a magazine but now knows she could’ve been beautiful if she hadn’t, hadn’t, hadn’t, HADN’T believed the rumours. Rumours of the tumour it creates in your brain, taking over her head instead. Making her want to look like Mrs Potato Head!

SOUTHERN METRO BEACHSIDE CROSS COUNTRY

Last Wednesday the 14th of June, 4 students from OSPS participated in the Regional Cross-Country Championships.

The course was at Hastings Foreshore in very challenging conditions. Congratulations to all four of our competitors, especially Sasha in Year 4 who came 12th, qualifying for the State Championships.

Well done to Rory, Sasha, Lidia and Veer.

OSPS GIRLS’ FOOTY

Last Tuesday, the Oakleigh South Girls Footy Team participated in the inaugural round robin against St Peters, Coatesville and St Andrew’s at Centenary Park.

Many of our Year 5 and 6 girls had never played before and it was terrific to see them giving a new sport a go, kicking, handballing, tackling and having an absolute blast!

Games were only two 15 minute halves long but gave each school a chance to play and have fun with most girls experiencing Aussie Rules for the first time.

We have only won one game since the formation of the Girls Footy team back in 2018 but history was made as we won 2 out of our 3 games qualifying for the next round to be held in Term 3.

An early loss to St Peter’s (37-2) was followed up by nail-biting win over Coatesville (9-7) and a comprehensive victory against St Andrew’s (43-1).

I’m really proud of all of the girls that took part and think it is so great that there is a pathway for girls to play any sport at our school.

Massive thanks to Mrs Peluso for being a part of it, getting involved at training and on match day. Sky’s the limit for these girls next term as we take on!
