As we move through another busy and productive term, it has been wonderful to see our students engaging so enthusiastically in their learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

This week, our Year 3 students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Myuna Farm, where they participated in a range of hands-on learning experiences that supported their classroom studies and deepened their understanding of sustainability and the environment.

Students explored the extensive vegetable gardens and learned about gardening for sustainability, visited the animal nursery, visited the Wetland Biodiversity area, and students explored the farm’s waste and recycling processes, gaining important insights into responsible environmental practices.

Wow, what an informative excursion! We thank everyone at Myuna Farm for providing such an engaging and meaningful learning experience for our Year 3 students.

Our Year 4 students are deep into rehearsals for Finding Nemo Kids, and we are excited to invite families to attend this wonderful production. Tickets for Year 4 parents opened on Monday and this will extend to the whole school community on Wednesday 10th June at 10am. Further information about tickets will be shared closer to the release date.

Cast 1 will perform on Wednesday 24 June, 6:30 pm and Cast 2 will perform on Thursday 25 June, 6:30 pm

We look forward to seeing you at the show and celebrating the hard work and talent of our Year 4 students.

Lastly, you have been notified of the carpark works next week from Wednesday 10 June to Friday 12 June. Please read the Compass notification that has been sent for full details. Thank you.

A reminder to families that Monday is the King’s Birthday public holiday. There will be no school for staff or students. We look forward to welcoming all students back to school at 8:45am on Tuesday, 9 June.

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable long weekend!

    Warm regards,

    Nikki Virtuoso
    Acting Principal

    IMPORTANT NOTICE: WINDSOR AVE WORKS

Monash Council will be undertaking maintenance on the unsealed surface at Windsor Ave, Oakleigh South, adjacent to the Oakleigh South Primary School parent car park. They will be resurfacing Windsor Ave with crushed concrete, which will be very welcome news to our school community, despite the inconvenience caused during the works.

The works will take place from Wednesday 10 June to Friday 12 June.

Access Changes During the Maintenance Works:
    • There will be no vehicle access to the unsealed area from Riley St or from the school parent car park.

Parent Car Park Access: The only entrance and exit to the parent car park will be via the single driveway on Riley Street.

    THE RESILIENCE PROJECT

Since 2022, OSPS has partnered with The Resilience Project to support student wellbeing from Foundation to Year 6 through the Inspire Program. The curriculum, designed by teachers for teachers, aligns with Victorian and Australian Curriculum standards in Personal and Social Capabilities and Health and Physical Education.

The program focuses on four key strategies to build resilience and happiness:

      • Gratitude: The act of being thankful and appreciating what you have in life.
      • Empathy: The capacity to understand and feel what another person is feeling.
      • Mindfulness: The practice of attention regulation.
      • Emotional Literacy: The ability to understand and express our feelings.

Each week, students participate in formal lessons and complete entries in their Resilience Student Journals. Activities include gratitude posters, mindfulness colouring, and emotion-matching exercises. As a Partnership School, OSPS integrates The Resilience Project’s wellbeing curriculum across the whole school community.

There are many ways to support your child’s mental health at home.

    BE A GEM AT HOME

Practising mindfulness helps us slow down, focus on the present moment and become more aware of our thoughts, feelings and surroundings in a calm and balanced way. Rather than getting caught up in worries about the past or future, mindfulness encourages us to pause and pay attention to what is happening right now.

Research shows that regularly practising mindfulness can help strengthen emotional regulation, focus and overall wellbeing. Even a few mindful moments each day can make a positive difference. Taking time to practise mindfulness can:

    • improve focus and concentration
    • support emotional regulation
    • reduce stress and feelings of overwhelm
    • promote calmness and relaxation
    • encourage self-awareness and empathy
    • support positive mental health and wellbeing.

Encouraging children to practise mindfulness at home is a simple and meaningful way to help build resilience, confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Below is a wonderful mindfulness activity and a GEM Chats conversation prompt that you may like to try together at home.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 2?

This term in Year 2, students have been exploring the topic of Past and Present through a range of engaging lessons and discussions. We have been learning about how life has changed over time, particularly focusing on technology, communication, transport, homes, schools, and everyday life.

Students have enjoyed comparing the past to the present and sharing their ideas about how inventions and advancements have made life different today. Through class activities, videos, discussions, and hands-on tasks, students have developed a greater understanding of how the world has evolved and continues to change over time.

    LITERACY CORNER

In Literacy this term, the Grade 2 students have been exploring persuasive writing and learning how to convince their audience using strong arguments and persuasive language. Students have been developing their skills by stating their opinion, providing reasons to support their thinking and using persuasive vocabulary to make their writing more convincing.

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT – LESSON OF THE WEEK:

This term, Year 2 students have been building their understanding of emotional literacy and empathy, learning that emotions are important messengers and that seeing things from another person’s perspective helps us better understand and support one another.

In emotional literacy lessons, students explored how feelings such as joy, sadness, anger, and fear can give us helpful information about what we need or what is happening around us. Through discussion, video clips, and reflective activities, students practised identifying emotions and considering how they can respond in calm and thoughtful ways. A key focus has been developing self-talk strategies, such as asking, “What is this feeling trying to tell me?” and “How can I respond in a helpful way?”

In empathy learning, students have been exploring what it means to “walk in someone else’s shoes.” Through activities such as examining different perspectives, discussing real-life scenarios, and role-playing situations, students have been developing their ability to recognise how others might feel and how they can respond with kindness and care. These experiences have encouraged students to understand that different perspectives are normal and valuable, and that empathy helps us build stronger relationships within our classroom community.

Together, these lessons are helping students strengthen their emotional awareness, perspective-taking skills, and ability to interact with others in respectful and supportive ways.

    THE RESILIENCE PROJECT – GEM

    Gratitude:
We are grateful for the wonderful support from our families and school community in making the school fete such a fun and successful event!

    Empathy:
We are empathetic by showing kindness to our classmates, including others in games and activities, and helping friends when they need support.

    Mindfulness:

We are being mindful by keeping our playground clean by packing up when the bell goes, helping to look after our school environment, and enjoying a calm and tidy space to learn and play in.

Camp Australia offers independent before- and after-school care (7:00 AM–8:45 AM and 3:30 PM–6:00 PM) in a safe, fun, and engaging environment.
