PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It’s the Preps’ turn this week to attend their 5-day intensive swimming program. From all reports, the children are doing very well with their swimming and having lots of fun. Just another reminder to parents to name everything the children bring to school, especially during swimming times when the children are changing clothes, wearing bathers, and using a hairbrush and towel. So many items of clothing and other possessions are unclaimed each day because they are not named.
Parents and Carers of prep, year 1 and 2 children would have received a notification on Monday regarding the picking up of children during school hours. Due to the building works and the extensive trip to get to the junior area to the office, we are now asking that parents sign their children out at the office, then proceed through gate 3 to collect their child straight from the classroom. This will cause less disruption to the classroom activities.
Yesterday, 13 OSPS students represented our school at the Beachside Division Cross Country. All the participants performed very well, with four students going to next stage. The whole school wishes these students good luck.
Finally, a reminder that next Monday, 5th June, there will be a pupil free day. Children are not required at school on this day. Staff will be undertaking a Professional Practice Day on reporting and assessment. The Camp Australia OSHC program will be running a care program for this day.
Have a fantastic week.

STUDENT SHOWCASE
VISUAL ARTS SHOWCASE
Last Wednesday Oakleigh South Primary School had a special visitor to the Art Room, renowned artist Daniel Butterworth. He’s a professional artist and a school teacher that is known for painting on scrap cardboard and for using house paints that he mixes on the cardboard as he works. He has been an Archibald finalist and a Moran Portraiture finalist and he believes he has painted over 2000 self portraits!
He spoke to the year six children about his career and about using things around the house to make art like coffee and even vegemite. He encouraged the children to draw every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes to improve their skills. His most important message was, “just have fun creating”.
They worked with Miss Hunt and the art team the week before on drawing portraits of the lion, the scarecrow and the tin man in pencil, onto cardboard before Mr B arrived. They then watched a demonstration and set about using the paints to complete a portrait that will be displayed in the foyer for the production of The Wizard of Oz Jr.
The children had a great time and got very messy. We even discovered some hidden talents. Each child experimented with colour mixing and mark making. We can’t wait to see them up on production night.
YEAR 1 SHOWCASE
Flash! Bang! WOW! This term we have become inquisitive scientists and have spent a lot of time doing some pretty exciting experiments. We have learnt all about predicting, observing and explaining what has happened in the experiments.
We have delved into chemical sciences and learnt all about how different chemicals react with one another. We saw elephant toothpaste expand before our eyes, milk dance in colour and we even made zip-lock bags explode!
Ice, ice baby! We have been learning about the 3 states of matter – liquids, solids and gases. Last week we experimented with the process of ‘melting’ and raced to find the quickest way to melt ice cubes. We knew we had to apply heat so we put our thinking caps on and came up with a few different strategies, such as, rubbing the ice between our hands to create friction, sucking on the ice, holding it in front of the heater, adding water to the cup of ice to dilute it, blowing on it with warm breath and wrapping it in tissues! Next, we’ll be learning about the changes of day and night, and all about the solar system.
We can’t wait!
WORLD MATHS DAY
World maths Day was held on the 8th of March this year with children from all over the world competing to be the best Mathematician.
Notably, Revan in Year 6 entered the Live Mathletics World Maths Day competitions earlier this year, and it turns out that he placed on top as the National Year 6 Champion.
Furthermore, he placed 6th in the world for his age group! Brilliant effort, Revan!
RESILIENCE PROJECT
Dear Parents and Carers,
With our strong connection and continued work with The Resilience Project at Oakleigh South Primary School, to support and foster the wellbeing of our students, staff and parents, we are thrilled to announce that Hugh van Cuylenburg will be delivering an online presentation to our parent community.
Hugh and the TRP Team are so looking forward to our upcoming Parent and Carer Discovering Resilience Webinar (with other schools) on Wednesday 31st May from 6:30pm to 7:30pm AEST (60 minutes).
What you can expect.
Hugh will be delivering his flagship ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation. Through his high-energy humour and captivating storytelling, Hugh will share simple, practical tips we can use everyday to improve our wellbeing.
Why a Parent & Carer presentation?
When building positive mental health in schools, we know the best impact happens when we work together.
The ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation helps do just that by sharing those same evidence-based strategies being taught in the classroom, so they can be also practised at home and beyond. Attendees will also be reminded of the importance of their own wellbeing- we bring the best versions of ourselves to our family and community, when we make time to look after ourselves.
Parents and Carers will need to register for the webinar using the following link:

YEAR 1 RESILIENCE PROJECT
Students have been learning all about empathy and what makes each of us special. Students were asked to think about why superheros get their name and what makes them special.
Yes, they might be able to fly, be super strong, or have laser eyes but the thing they all have in common is that they want to help others. Students were asked to identify what their superpower is and how they can be helpful towards others.
Superpowers such as being nice and teaching others how to play games or do things we are good at were discovered. Recently we have also been learning about belly breathing. This comes in handy whenever we are feeling nervous, stressed or upset. All you need to do is sit up straight, place your hand on your belly and feel the air flow in and out of your body as you take nice deep, slow breaths.

LITERACY CORNER
YEAR 1 LITERACY CORNER
Do you think you have the best mum in the world? Do you think dogs make the best pet? Where would you rather go swimming- the beach or a pool?
These are some of the questions the Grade 1s have been answering during our unit on persuasive writing. Students have learnt what the difference between an opinion and a fact is and are able to give reasons why their opinion is the best.
Check out some of these amazing persuasives from 1JG and 1MT:
“Are you kidding me? You know that mermaids are the best. Firstly they have scales. Secondly they can sleep in a clam bed. Lastly they can find treasure and wear golden jewels. Mermaids are the best!” Lenka B 1MT
