PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
On Monday we had very excited year 1 and 2 students as they began their 5-day intensive swimming program at GESAC. Not only are the children experiencing the very worthwhile swimming program, but they are learning skills of travelling with their peers on a bus and the independent skills of organising themselves before and after the lesson. It was a great start to the week, well done everyone!!
Next Monday our prep children begin their first swimming program at GESAC. Thank you to the staff who have organised this great program for the children and a big thanks to the parents who have helped each day at the pool.
The demolition of the old administration block has swung into full force this week, hence the new access procedures for parents and children. There has been a gentle ramp constructed at gate 3 to allow parents with strollers and disability access to the Year P-4 and Year 6 areas. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to overcome the challenges as we navigate our way around the building site.
With our strong connection and continued work with The Resilience Project at Oakleigh South Primary School, to support and foster the wellbeing of our students, staff, and parents, we are thrilled to announce that Hugh van Cuylenburg will be delivering an online presentation to our parent community.
Hugh and the TRP Team are looking forward to our upcoming parent and carer webinar, ‘Discovering Resilience.’ This online presentation will screen next Wednesday 31st May from 6:30pm to 7:30pm AEST (60 minutes).
Parents and Carers will need to register for the webinar using the following link:

Finally, good luck to the OSPS Cross Country team who will represent our school at the Beachside Division Cross Country run next Tuesday.
Have a fantastic week.

STUDENT SHOWCASE
HATCHING CHICKS
CHEEP CHEEP The cuddly, calm, and cheery chicks have been chatting away in the Year 3 Village. We have an exciting integrated learning opportunity.
Two weeks ago, we had some eggs and chicks arrive from Henny Penny. They also brought us an incubator and a pen for the hatched chicks.
We have watched the eggs hatch in an incubator with a 360-degree view, and observed the hatched chicks play in a large, clear-sided pen with a safety net.
There’s a heat lamp to keep the fluffy friends warm, wood shavings to keep them comfortable and plenty of water and feed to keep them satisfied.
We have relished the opportunity to learn to nurture and care for these little living creatures, whilst studying their life cycle and behaviours.
RESILIENCE PROJECT
Dear Parents and Carers,
With our strong connection and continued work with The Resilience Project at Oakleigh South Primary School, to support and foster the wellbeing of our students, staff and parents, we are thrilled to announce that Hugh van Cuylenburg will be delivering an online presentation to our parent community.
Hugh and the TRP Team are so looking forward to our upcoming Parent and Carer Discovering Resilience Webinar (with other schools) on Wednesday 31st May from 6:30pm to 7:30pm AEST (60 minutes).
What you can expect.
Hugh will be delivering his flagship ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation. Through his high-energy humour and captivating storytelling, Hugh will share simple, practical tips we can use everyday to improve our wellbeing.
Why a Parent & Carer presentation?
When building positive mental health in schools, we know the best impact happens when we work together.
The ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation helps do just that by sharing those same evidence-based strategies being taught in the classroom, so they can be also practised at home and beyond. Attendees will also be reminded of the importance of their own wellbeing- we bring the best versions of ourselves to our family and community, when we make time to look after ourselves.
Parents and Carers will need to register for the webinar using the following link:

YEAR 3 RESILIENCE PROJECT
This term in The Resilience Project we have been learning about gratitude and empathy.
One engaging activity we played was gratitude tennis. It’s when we have two teams line up facing each other.
The first team starts by saying one thing they are grateful for and why. The second team responds with another reason why they are grateful for that same item.
It keeps going back and forth until all the reasons are exhausted. These are some of the reasons which students came up with for the topic: parents.
Another fun activity to help us with our learning was empathy charades. Students got act out an emotion for their partner after drawing an emotion card.
The students really enjoyed showcasing their dramatic acting skills and we all had a lot of fun.
Here are the different emotions that we got to act out.

LITERACY CORNER
YEAR 3 LITERACY
This term, we have been focusing on Information Reports and Procedural Texts. We’ve learnt about the important language features of each text and how to properly structure each text type.
In class, we have been learning about Information Reports’ structure and language features, including paragraphing and grouping of facts.
We have been able to plan and write some of our own Information Reports. We’ve also learnt about writing information texts by analysing information texts from Sharks to Seeing Eye Dogs. Here are some examples from our wonderful writers.
SNAKES
Habitat
Snakes are found in tropical areas of the world and live in bushes, forests, deserts, and burrows. They also live in lakes and oceans.
Venom
Around 600 species of snakes are venomous, and highly toxic saliva is pushed through their fangs. Snakes use venom to kill their prey and for self-defence.
Diet & Food
Snakes are carnivores. Some species of snakes eat rabbits, mice, birds, and even whole eggs. Some even eat insects, amphibians like axolotls, and other reptiles.
Appearance
A snake’s body is covered with dry hard scales, with no eyelids and a forked tongue. They also shed their skin a number of times every year. Their jaws are very flexible to eat large prey.

FIREFIGHTERS
Introduction
Firefighters have probably saved your life, and you don’t remember! These people are one of a kind.
Skills
Firefighters can drop water from helicopters. People who train to be firefighters are likely to become one.
Equipment
Firefighters use strong water-pressure hoses to put out bushfires more easily. Their trucks have great speed, so they can quickly get to the fires.
Courage
Firefighters have great choices to make, like to save ten people or to try and save them all. So you see, firefighters have saved millions of lives. You might be one of them!

We have limited spaces available for neighbouring Primary School students to join us for some of our Sports Development Program sessions in Football & Soccer.
The Football/Soccer Development Program provides opportunities to boys and girls at the College to learn and further improve their strategic, tactical and physical skills through a specialist sports program.
All students, even those who have not played football or soccer before, will have the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive environment. Students will receive expert training from legends of the game Kevin Sheedy & Archie Thompson as well as learn skill development from our specially trained Sports staff.
Kevin Sheedy:
Player honours
Best and Fairest 1976 @ Richmond; Premiership Team player 1969, 1973, 1974;
Victorian Representative (8 games, 1 goal); captain 1978; Richmond Team of the Century.
Archie Thompson:
Player honours
Archie has played over 50 times for Australia, scoring 28 goals. He was in the squad for the
2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2001 and 2005 FIFA Confederations Cups, the 2007 Asian Cup,
the 2008 Summer Olympics and the successful 2004 Nations Cup.
He holds the all-time goal scoring record for a single international match, where he scored 13
goals in a 31–0 victory against American Samoa, in 2001.
The focus of this Development Program will be to develop and improve the fundamental skills, game sense and technical knowledge of the sport. Students who are more advanced will be challenged through different drills that target pattern play, structure, decision making and strategies, transitioning the sport. These training sessions will ensure all students are challenged and will see improvement in their game.

SHARE THE DIGNITY
After a successful Mother’s Day stall, Parent Group is pleased to announce that they will be donating $1000 to Share the Dignity. Here is a little bit of information explaining what Share the Dignity does and how this donation will help their charity.
“Our work directly benefits those in crisis experiencing period poverty. Everyone deserves to be afforded the dignity so many of us take for granted. Share the Dignity makes a real, on-the-ground difference to those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or experiencing poverty.
We distribute period products and work to end period poverty here in Australia. When someone is doing it tough, the last thing on their mind should be dealing with their period. We assist by collecting thousands of period products each year through our collection drives and campaigns and distributing them directly to charities.”
We would like to thank the school community for their support with the stall which made this donation possible.
