PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The huge task of decanting the administration and staffroom wing of the school to the new space, began last Thursday. All office staff, AP’s (except Mr Rowe in the year 6 area) and I are now situated in the west end of the year 5 building.

Please enter through the white door at the side of the building if you need to speak to office staff or sign your child in or out of school. Sick bay is also located in the area.

Next week the Year 1 children begin their swimming program at GESAC. The students will be involved in an intensive 5-day swimming program. The students that are not attending will be learning about the importance of water safety.

This year there are new statewide enrolment procedures in place for all children beginning prep in 2024. All enrolment applications are due by Friday 28th July and parents and carers will be notified by Friday 11th August of their enrolment outcome. We urge you to enrol any siblings of children already at our school, as soon as possible. This cut-off date includes siblings as well. This is very important as it allows us to understand how many vacancies we have to offer other potential enrolments. Thank you for your assistance.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

RESILIENCE PROJECT

Dear Parents and Carers,

With our strong connection and continued work with The Resilience Project at Oakleigh South Primary School, to support and foster the wellbeing of our students, staff and parents, we are thrilled to announce that Hugh van Cuylenburg will be delivering an online presentation to our parent community.

Hugh and the TRP Team are so looking forward to our upcoming Parent and Carer Discovering Resilience Webinar (with other schools) on Wednesday 31st May from 6:30pm to 7:30pm AEST (60 minutes).

What you can expect.
Hugh will be delivering his flagship ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation. Through his high-energy humour and captivating storytelling, Hugh will share simple, practical tips we can use everyday to improve our wellbeing.

Why a Parent & Carer presentation?
When building positive mental health in schools, we know the best impact happens when we work together.

The ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation helps do just that by sharing those same evidence-based strategies being taught in the classroom, so they can be also practised at home and beyond. Attendees will also be reminded of the importance of their own wellbeing- we bring the best versions of ourselves to our family and community, when we make time to look after ourselves.

Parents and Carers will need to register for the webinar using the following link:

YEAR 5 RESILIENCE PROJECT

Over the last few weeks our Year 5 lessons from the Resilience Project have been focusing on ‘Empathy’.

Empathy is the capacity to understand and feel what another person is feeling’.

This week in small groups, students developed a short play and performed in front of the rest of their class.

This was an opportunity for our students to work collaboratively, in a creative way, to inform their class of the very important message of empathy and kindness.

They had lots of fun and we had some outstanding performances.

LITERACY CORNER

YEAR 5 LITERACY CORNER

‘100 Word Holiday Writing Challenge’

The Year 5s have been busy working on a ‘100 Word Holiday Writing Challenge’. They had to first draft a recount on one aspect of their recent holidays, making sure they used exactly 100 words. They also had to make sure they kept their writing engaging and used a high level of vocabulary. Once their draft was complete, each student had a one-on-one conference with their teacher, to edit and recount their words. At this point, lots of students were sent back to take out, or add, a word or two.

When the drafts were complete, the good copy began – students were given an outline of glasses, with lines ruled. They wrote their good copy on these lines, then drew an A4 portrait of themselves and stuck the glasses over the top. We think the end products look pretty spectacular!

OSPS SPORT

YEAR 5 INTRASCHOOL SPORT

Last Thursday our Year 5 students participated in either lawn bowls or their chosen summer sport at GESAC.

All students enjoyed their experience which has been designed to give them a taste of Year 6 interschool sport.

Thank you to all the Year 5 teachers who helped coach the students throughout Semester 1 along with the P.E teachers.

PARENT GROUP

MOTHER’S DAY STALL – PARENT GROUP

Parent Group were pleased to be able to host their 2nd successful Mother’s Day stall last week.

With over 70 different items on sale, there was a real sense of excitement as class by class the students put a lot of thought into what they should buy their mum or special person.

We would also like to thank the Herd family for their generous donation of heat bags.

As always, we would like to thank all our volunteers that made this event possible. Parent Group hosts many events over the school year, and these are only possible because of the parent volunteers. If you would like to be notified of volunteer opportunities, please feel free to email Parent Group at osparentgroup67@gmail.com.

PARENT GROUP UNIFORM SHOP

The 2nd hand uniform shop has brand new OSPS branded scarves ($20) and beanies ($18) in stock for the cooler weather.

If you would like to purchase one, the uniform shop is open from 8.45am – 9.15am on Wednesday and Fridays.

Alternatively, you can email osparentgroup67@gmail.com if you’d like to purchase but are unable to get to the 2nd hand shop.
