PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
IT’S FETE WEEK AND WE CAN’T WAIT FOR THE DAY TO ARRIVE!!!
This Saturday our wonderful AUTUMN FAMILY FETE will be on.
The classroom teachers are putting the finishing touches to their stall timetables so if you haven’t volunteered to work on your child’s stall, please do so as soon as possible. Our amazing fete committee and our staff are doing a fantastic job tying up all the loose ends in readiness for the big day.
DON’T MISS OUT ON YOUR WRISTBAND FOR THE RIDES!!!
The ride wristbands will be on sale for $45 each till Friday at 6.00pm on Trybooking. These wristbands offer great value as the children can access the rides between 10am – 3pm, unlimited!! After 3pm all rides will be for sale at individual prices.
We have an extra high-capacity ride coming this year called, ‘The Bad Boys’ and with the weather looking to be around 20 degrees and fine, the two inflatables will be in action on the day.
The wristbands will not be available for sale on the fete day.
This year we are going DIGITAL! We won’t issue your child’s Early Bird Wrist Bands at school on Friday. All you need to do is one of 2 things so that your ticket can be digitally scanned on Fete morning from 9.30am.
- Print off your Trybooking ticket and give it to your child/ren to present at the ticket box, where one of our friendly staff members will scan your ticket and issue the wristband to your child/ren
- Present your Trybooking Tickets on your mobile phone, where one of our friendly staff members will scan your ticket and issue the wristband to your child/ren.
Our Fete is a group effort so I would like to thank everyone in advance for their hard work. I know it will pay off on Saturday when Oakleigh South PS has another amazing Fete day.
Have a great week and I’ll see you all on Saturday.

RESILIENCE PROJECT
STUDENT SHOWCASE
YEAR 1 STUDENT SHOWCASE
Flash! Bang! WOW! This term we have become inquisitive scientists and have spent a lot of time doing some pretty exciting experiments. We have learnt all about predicting, observing and explaining what has happened in the experiments. We have delved into chemical sciences and learnt all about how different chemicals react with one another. We saw:
ELEPHANT TOOTHPAST
In this experiment we saw foam being made from dishwashing detergent trapping oxygen bubbles when we added yeast to hydrogen peroxide. It looks like toothpaste as the foam escapes the bottle.
MAGIC MILK
This experiment showed us that everyday items materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways. We learnt that dish soap molecules chase fat molecules in milk and this is shown by the food colouring swirling and moving.
EXPLODING LUNCH BAGS
Students have been learning about mixing solids and liquids together to create a gas. The baking soda and vinegar mix together creating a gas called carbon dioxide. This fills the bag until it can’t hold any longer, then pops!
All the Grade Ones are really looking forward to their next science experiment called melting ice!
YEAR 1 LITERACY CORNER
Do you think you have the best mum in the world? Do you think dogs make the best pet? Would you rather be a Mermaid or a Dragon? These are some of the questions the Grade 1s have been answering during our unit on persuasive writing. Students have learnt what the difference between an opinion and a fact is and are able to give reasons why their opinion is the best.
Check out some of these amazing persuasive pieces from each class:
Ice cream or chocolate?
I strongly believe that ice cream is better than chocolate.
Ice cream is better because there are lots of flavours.
Ice cream is better because you can add lots of toppings.
Ice cream is better as you can eat it on hot days.
For these reasons, that is why ice cream is better than chocolate.
– Summer, 1SC
Dogs or cats?
Obviously, I would rather have a dog.
Firstly dogs are fun to play with.
Secondly dogs protect us from strangers. My dog, he wakes up if he hears footsteps, he will growl.
Lastly, dogs are fluffy. When I’m sad my dog comes to me and then I lift my dog and I feel happy.
See, dogs are the best pet!
– Devin F, 1MT
Would you rather be a Mermaid or Dragon?
Splash! Splash! How cool would it be to be a mermaid.
I want to be a mermaid because I can swim.
I have a treasure chest with diamonds and coins.
I have scales they are shiny and look beautiful.
It’s easy to see that Mermaids are cool.
– Lydia 1LB
Would you rather be a Mermaid or Dragon?
How cool would it be flying in the sky like a flying beast?
It can breathe fire. It also has tough scales.
It can burn its enemies to death and bite it’s enemies with sharp razor teeth.
It can smack it’s enemy with it’s spikey tail.
As you can see for these reasons above I like dragons way more than mermaids.
– Samuel 1LB
YEAR 1 GEM
Gratitude: “We are grateful for having the Mother’s Day Stall so we can get things for our mums and grandmas.” – Zoe 1KS
Empathy: “Let’s be kind and caring to others.” – Poppy 1KS
Mindfulness: “If we are mindful, it calms us down and helps us when we are feeling sad.” – Kabir 1KS
YEAR 1 RESILIENCE PROJECT
Year 1 students have been learning all about gratitude and what we are thankful for. Students were asked to think about what they are grateful for and write this on a leaf template. These were combined to make a tree of gratitude. Some questions that were asked were:
- I wonder if you know what it means to be grateful?
- I wonder if everyone is grateful for the same things or different things?
- I wonder if you can find even the smallest things and be grateful for it?
SPORT AT OSPS
BENTLEIGH DISTRICT CROSS-COUNTRY
On Tuesday 30th May, OSPS took 50 of their best runners to compete in Bentleigh District Cross Country. Despite a couple of rain showers, the day will filled with excitement, determination and triumph! The 9 and 10-year-olds started the day with a bang, Mika P and Koby P took 2nd and 3rd place for the boys with Olia A and Emma M bringing home 1st and 3rd respectively for the girls! Jack O, Aadhiyan R and Drewin D also qualifying in this age group for the next round.
Throughout the races, athletes showcased incredible perseverance and sportsmanship. Cheers and encouragement echoed around the oval as teammates and supporters rallied behind each runner, spurring them on right to the finish line.
The 11-year-olds were up next, running the 3km. Sasha M and Rory M received 1st and 2nd while Makaela T brought home a 4th. Mickey Z, Patrick P and William J had a brilliant race also qualifying in their age group for Division. As the clouds parted and the sun broke through, casting a golden glow over the field, the last 2 races were held for the 12- and 13-year-olds. Karlos W finished 4th for the boys while Lidia V had an incredible victory in the girls’ races, followed by Kathleen H who came in 3rd. Also qualifying for Division were Ovi M, Alex R and Tiyah S.
In the end, Oakleigh South Primary School emerged victorious, with cheers of joy and pride filling the air. It was a testament to the hard work, dedication and teamwork of our athletes, coaches and supporters. A huge congratulations to all who participated and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make the day a resounding success. Good luck to those athletes making their way to Division on Tuesday 28th May. We wish you all the best!
PARENT GROUP
MOTHER’S DAY & SPECIAL PERSON DAY STALL 2024
Last week, Parent Group hosted their annual Mother’s Day / Special Person stall. This was our biggest stall yet with over 100 items on sale. Across two days, we saw each class come in to select their gifts. Some children knew exactly what they wanted to buy while others took their time browsing.
As the stall was profitable, Parent Group has decided to donate $1000 of the profits to a locally based charity, Next Steps Australia Limited. To give you insight into what Next Steps Australia Limited does to help the community their mission is below:
Our mission is to support survivors of domestic and family violence in establishing independent homes and lives by providing Starter Packs of essential manchester items to families who are forced to leave their homes due to violence.
We aim to supply at least 365 Starter Packs each year to families in need, meaning that each day of each year, Next Steps Australia is helping at least one mother or child start a new life.
For more information on our selected charity or to see how you can support them please visit their website: https://www.nextstepsaustralia.org.au/
As always, we would like to thank all our volunteers who made this event possible. It was nice to see a lot of new faces volunteering and we hope this continues with other events throughout the year.
If you would like to be notified of volunteer opportunities, please feel free to email Parent Group at osparentgroup67@gmail.com.
Lastly, we would like to wish all of our OSPS mums and special people a very Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday!
