PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents & Carers,

This week parent group hosted the Prep BBQ which was enjoyed by many of our prep families. Mr Silly Pants entertained the crowd with his silly jokes, tricks and antics. Huge thank you to Parent Group, the Prep Team and Leadership for your support on the evening. We hope it was a great opportunity for Prep families to meet each other and celebrate the first few weeks of Prep.

Next week we have the Outdoor Cinema Evening of Moana 2 on the school oval on Friday 28th February. We can’t wait to see the excitement of the children and families as they enjoy the twilight evening together under the stars. Check out the details below

My last item is about the car park and a reminder to all families about appropriate behaviours and actions.

  • The staff car park is not to be used for pick up and drop off
  • Slow down and adhere to speed limits
  • Illegal u turns in intersections and over school crossings is against the law
  • Double parking, parking people in or across local resident driveways is undesirable behaviour
  • Be patient, we understand getting in and out is difficult, please show patience, understanding and common courtesy
  • Park your car safely, before walking your children in and out of the car park.

Police and council officers will be monitoring the school and surrounding streets over the next few weeks.

I hope you all have a restful weekend.

Ron Cantlon
Principal

PREP WELCOME BBQ 2025

Earlier this week, our Parent Group, along with our fantastic Prep teachers and Leadership team, hosted the Prep Welcome BBQ. We had an incredible turnout, and with perfect weather on our side, it was a wonderful evening for all.

The children were entertained by the always-hilarious Charlie Silly Pants, while parents and carers enjoyed a chance to connect over a meal. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience on the night and hope our new Prep students are settling in well.

A huge THANK YOU to the Parent Group for organising the event, as well as to the dedicated teachers who cooked and helped serve food. Your efforts made this special event a great success!

BOOK CLUB

SCHOOL GATE OPENING TIMES

From Monday 10th February, all four school gates will open at 8:35am. This allows plenty of time for students to make their way to their classrooms before the doors open at 8:45am.

On rare occasions, a gate may not be opened due to unforeseen circumstances. If this happens, please call the school office on 9570 1016, and a staff member will assist you.

Thank you for your cooperation.

HOUSE T-SHIRTS – AVAILABLE AT PSW

The new OSPS house t-shirts for Gould, Cuthbert, Fraser, and Landy are now available at Primary School Wear (PSW) Cheltenham for $50.95. These are an optional uniform item for all students from Prep to Year 6 and are not compulsory. Students may wear their house t-shirt on their PE class day or for any special sports activity.

Classroom teachers will provide information about PE days and other special sporting events throughout the year. House t-shirts can also be worn by Year 3–6 students (and some selected Year 2 students) for house athletics, house swimming, and house cross-country events.

We strongly encourage Year 5 and Year 6 students to purchase a house t-shirt, as this will support Year 5 and Year 6 PE lessons and the OSPS sport program. The regular Year 6 interschool sport uniforms for various teams will remain in place, and further details will be provided to Year 6 families next year.

Looking forward to seeing our new house tops in action!

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT

Since 2022, OSPS has partnered with The Resilience Project to support student wellbeing from Foundation to Year 6 through the Inspire Program. The curriculum, designed by teachers for teachers, aligns with Victorian and Australian Curriculum standards in Personal and Social Capabilities and Health and Physical Education.

The program focuses on four key strategies to build resilience and happiness:

  • Gratitude: The act of being thankful and appreciating what you have in life.
  • Empathy: The capacity to understand and feel what another person is feeling.
  • Mindfulness: The practice of attention regulation.
  • Emotional Literacy: The ability to understand and express our feelings.

Each week, students participate in formal lessons and complete entries in their Resilience Student Journals. Activities include gratitude posters, mindfulness colouring, and emotion-matching exercises. As a Partnership School, OSPS integrates The Resilience Project’s wellbeing curriculum across the whole school community.

There are many ways to support your child’s mental health at home.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

PREP SHOWCASE

Starting Prep has been an exciting journey filled with learning and fun! Our students have been busy settling into school life, understanding expectations, and learning important routines. From meeting specialist teachers to making new friends, everyone has done an amazing job adjusting to their new environment.

We’ve been exploring the sounds of the alphabet, practicing our numbers of the week, and even starting to use computers! Each day brings new discoveries as we learn how to be at school, work together, and support one another. It has been a fantastic start, and we can’t wait for the many adventures ahead in Prep!

LITERACY CORNER

The Preps are very excited to take home their first take-home readers! We have been learning to point to each word, use the pictures for clues, and identify sounds that we know.

We have started learning some letter sounds and have enjoyed fun craft activities, such as making a letter “S” snake and a letter “T” turtle.

We have also begun learning how to write and are practising writing recounts about our weekends. To develop our writing skills, we are tracing and copying the teacher’s writing and have learned that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

PREP GEM

Gratitude – We are showing gratitude by appreciating what we have.

Empathy (Kindness) – We are showing empathy by understanding and sharing others’ feelings.

Mindfulness – We are being mindful by practicing attention regulation.

Emotional Literacy – We are learning emotional literacy by recognising and expressing emotions.
