Welcome to Oakleigh South Primary School Science Lab!

Our engaging and interactive science program is designed to ignite curiosity and inspire young minds from Prep to Grade 6. Through hands-on experiments, exciting demonstrations, and exploration of the world around us, students will discover the wonders of science. Join us on a journey of discovery as we unravel the mysteries of the universe together!”

What do we do in science classes?

Students can explore and investigate various scientific concepts through a combination of hands-on experiments, interactive demonstrations, group discussions, and real-world applications. Our goal is to make learning science fun and engaging while fostering critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the natural world. Our school implements the 5Es model – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate- that provides a structured approach to learning that fosters inquiry and critical thinking skills.

Students conducting experiments to observe phenomena, ask questions, form hypotheses, test predictions, collect data, and draw conclusions. They will also engage in activities that promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Through exploration and discovery, students will develop a love for science and a curiosity about the world around them.

Program Highlights

Hands-On Experiments: Students have the chance to conduct experiments in a laboratory setting, where they can apply scientific principles and theories in a practical way.

Incursions: We invite scientists, researchers, and experts from various fields to speak to students about their work, share their experiences, and inspire the next generation of scientists. Taking part in an exciting and engaging incursion on Forensic Science with Education Interactive Workshop.

Science Expo: As part of our STEM – Science Program, our students are involved in an innovated project ‘Mission to Mars’ which involves the students to learn the skills of Critical and Design Thinking process that includes Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test with hands-on activities. It’s a brilliant opportunity to share their creations, learn from each other’s, and meet like-minded innovators.

Research Opportunities: Students have the chance to engage in research projects, collaborate with faculty members, and contribute to ongoing scientific investigations.

Modern Facilities: Our science/sustainable kitchen is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and resources to support students in their scientific inquiries and experiments.

Design Thinking Challenges: Our program includes various competitions and challenges that encourage students to think creatively and apply their knowledge in innovative ways. A consistent element of our teaching includes a focus on the Design Thinking process when solving problems.

Overall, our science program aims to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and develop critical thinking skills in students, preparing them for future success in the fields of science and beyond.
