OAKLEIGH SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

Konnichiwa!
At Oakleigh South Primary School (OSPS), we believe in making Japanese learning fun and engaging. Our students enjoy a wide variety of activities, including singing, games, conversation practice, reading challenges, cooking, worksheets, cultural demonstrations, writing hiragana, origami, art, listening games, and communication exercises. This approach fosters a love for the language while helping students develop essential skills.

Black Belt Club
OSPS is proud to offer the “Black Belt Club,” a special lunchtime Japanese club. Students who master the ability to read four sets of Hiragana are invited to join. The club offers a range of exciting cultural activities like Kendama (Japanese cup-and-ball game), cooking (onigiri, cookie decoration, mochi, etc.), hiragana card games, origami, clay sushi making, and more. It’s a fantastic way for students to experience Japanese culture beyond the classroom, and they absolutely love it!

Transition Program / Oakleigh Education Plan
Our school is an active participant in the Oakleigh Education Plan, collaborating closely with nearby secondary schools such as South Oakleigh Secondary College and Huntingdale Primary School. This program ensures a seamless transition for students moving to secondary education.

Study Tour / Exchange Program
Each year, a small group of Grade 6 students is selected to visit our sister school in Japan. This exchange program gives students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. In return, we also welcome students from Japan, fostering global connections and cultural exchange.

Matsuri Week / Japanese Dress-Up Day
To celebrate and deepen our understanding of Japanese culture, OSPS holds a lively “Matsuri Week,” which includes a special Japanese Dress-Up Day where students can enjoy a variety of cultural activities and dress in traditional Japanese attire.

Assistant Teachers / Volunteers
At OSPS, we are fortunate to have the support of assistant teachers provided through the Education Department, as well as a number of dedicated volunteers from Japan. These volunteers work alongside our teachers to support students’ learning and enhance their experience of Japanese language and culture. Their presence provides additional opportunities for students to practice and immerse themselves in authentic Japanese interactions.
