PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome Back to Term 4!

It’s always such an exciting time of year, and this term is no exception. We have a fantastic lineup of events and activities—from incursions and excursions to the Region and State Athletics Championships.

Next Tuesday, we’ll be celebrating Japanese Dress Up Day! Get ready for colourful costumes, fun cultural learning, and a delicious Sushi lunch organized by our amazing parent group—thank you so much! Plus, the ever-popular Colour Run is coming up soon, a highlight for both kids and parents alike.

Our much-anticipated Year 2 production is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to see the creativity and hard work come to life on stage. We’re also gearing up for the Year 6 Graduation, a special milestone for our oldest students, alongside many more exciting activities to keep the energy buzzing.

Before we know it, we’ll be celebrating Christmas and looking forward to the summer break. But for now, our focus remains on learning and preparing the kids for 2026.

Speaking of next year, the 2025 Prep Transition program starts in two weeks on Friday. Over four Friday afternoons, our soon-to-be 2026 Preps will enjoy fun activities designed to make their move into primary school smooth and enjoyable. It’s always such a special time for new students and their families.

A huge thank you to our wonderful parent group for organizing the Twilight Picnic on Friday, 17th October. This fantastic community event is a great way for families to come together and celebrate the term.

Finally, a quick update on the proposed sandpit and bike shed works: Due to weather delays over the holidays, progress has been limited. However, a gate has been installed next to the sandpit in the laneway fence to allow access for works. The drink taps in the proposed junior bike shed area (the alcove between classrooms 1MB and 1NM) have been relocated nearby. A roofing contractor has also been onsite to quote roofing for the bike storage areas, with quotes expected to be presented at the next School Council meeting for approval.

Here’s to a fantastic Term 4 full of learning, fun, and community spirit!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Warm regards,

Nikki Virtuoso
Acting Principal

SCHOOL MATTERS

JAPANESE DRESS UP DAY

Japanese Dress-Up Day will be held on Tuesday 14th October (Term 4, Week 2). Students are encouraged to dress as their favourite anime character, ninja, samurai, or video game character like Mario. We aim to make this a fun and memorable celebration for everyone.

The Best Costume Prize will be awarded to one student from each grade, so let your creativity shine!

Additionally, we’re running a colouring competition this term, with winners to be announced at a special assembly on Dress-Up Day.

TWILIGHT PICNIC NIGHT!

A friendly reminder that our Twilight Picnic is happening next Friday 17th October from 5:00pm on the school oval.

The OSPS Parent Group invites all families to join us for a relaxed evening together. Bring along your picnic rug, chairs, and favourite snacks to enjoy a laid-back night with our school community.

The weather is looking perfect — a warm 26°C evening, so it’s set to be a great night for families to come together and celebrate the start of term!

This is a free event and will be held on the main school oval.

If you have any questions, please contact Parent Group at osparentgroup67@gmail.com.

We hope to see you there!

FOOTY DAY SUCCESS

Last term’s Footy Day might just have been the biggest and best ever! The parades and kicking competitions were a hit. The highlight of the morning being Miss Littlejohn doing the unthinkable and kicking the ball into the bin and celebrating with her adoring fans! The staff vs students game went down to the wire with the Year 6 students winning by 1 point with Anav and Kemi being the joint winners of the best on ground award!

Most importantly though was the money we raised through our coin line competition. This year we raised an incredible $2599.95 which is by far the most we have ever raised. Those coins went for a total of 330 metres! Adding in the very generous donation from Parent Group of $1000 and we end up with a total of $3599.95 that we can give to the Children’s Tumour Foundation. I want to say a massive thank you to every single student and their family who brought coins in because this donation is a huge achievement and shows the power of our school.

From me, a massive thank you to Parent Group for their tremendous donation and support, to the teachers for measuring coin lines with their kids and to the students and families who make Footy Day so much fun.

ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS

Dear Oakleigh South Primary School Community,

The Department of Transport & Planning has introduced a permanent 40km/h school speed zone along Centre Road, from Melaleuca Drive (Clarinda Primary School) to Cameron Avenue (South Oakleigh College).

This lower speed limit applies every school day during 8:00–9:30am and 2:30–4:00pm, returning to 60km/h at all other times.

This important safety change follows years of advocacy by OSPS families and the local community to make the area safer for students, families, and staff travelling to and from school.

For more information, visit the Transport Victoria project page.

Please obey all road rules and signage, take extra care during drop-off and pick-up times, and model safe driving behaviours around our school.

The road safety infographics below outline key traffic rules, safe parking guidance, and associated penalties:

STAFF CARPARK

The staff car park is for staff only. Parents and carers must not park, drop off, pick up, or drive through this area during school hours.

Families with a valid disability parking permit or a school-approved exemption (for extenuating circumstances only) are the only exceptions.

Having students in the staff car park is unsafe and increases the risk of accidents.

This also ensures access for the admin team, visiting support staff, deliveries, and emergency vehicles, who may need to come and go during the day. If vehicles are blocked or parked incorrectly, staff are unable to leave their duties, as their priority is student safety.

Please use the oval parent car park or signed street parking for all drop-offs and pick-ups.

SUN SMART AT OSPS

From mid-August to April, Oakleigh South Primary School follows SunSmart and DET guidelines to keep students safe.

  • Hats are compulsory. Students must wear a bottle-green broad-brimmed, legionnaire, or bucket hat outdoors during high UV periods (mid-August to April). No Hat, No Play applies.
  • Hats are available from the second-hand uniform shop or PSW Cheltenham.
  • Sunscreen is recommended by SunSmart and DET when UV is 3+. Students may bring their own labelled sunscreen if suitable.

  • Students should wear their OSPS uniform (which is SunSmart-compliant) and manageable layers they can put on or take off independently, to avoid overheating.

  • A water bottle is recommended every day.

Daily UV levels are displayed on the TV screens in the Admin Building and via the SunSmart app.

Hats can be purchased from PSW Cheltenham or the OSPS second-hand uniform shop, open Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:45–9:15am, run by our wonmderful parent volunteers.

You can view our OSPS Sun Protection Policy for full details.

FOOTY DAY SUCCESS!

Over 700 Hot Dogs Handballed Out on Footy Day!

During the half-time break on the last day of Term 3, the Parent Group kicked a major goal by serving up over 700 hot dogs to our footy-loving students in celebration of Footy Day!

A massive shout-out to our team captain, Parent Group president Nicole Stenton, for making sure no one was left hungry on the bench. Thanks to her smooth coordination, the day ran like a well-oiled midfield.

And to all the legends who grabbed a hot dog – you helped us raise an incredible $1,000 for the Children’s Tumour Foundation. That’s a win both on and off the field!

We’re always on the lookout for new recruits to join the Parent Group team—whether you’re ready to pull on the boots or just keen to help from the sidelines, every bit counts towards kicking goals for our school community. Please email osparentgroup67@gmail.com for more information.

Thanks for being part of our club—with your support, we’re building a strong side and making OSPS a premiership-winning place for our kids.
