PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s been a busy week for our Year 2 students as they performed their production of ‘Porridge’. They did an exceptional job with their singing, dancing, acting and stage craft. The costumes, sets, projections and special effects were all amazing. The children should be very proud of themselves as many of them overcame their nerves to perform in front of such large audiences. Congratulations to all the staff involved, especially Amy Phillipsen the Director and Jenny Barnard Musical Director. The parent’s proud faces said it all as they watched their little ones on stage!

The Preps had a great time this week as they travelled to GESAC each day to attend their swimming program. From all reports they did very well, not only in their lesson, but the travelling to and from the pool. Great job Preps and thank you to staff and parents who supported this very valuable program.

On Monday the Year 6 students and staff set off on their trip to the Grampians for their 5-day camp. From the reports that I received, the children had a great time, experiencing the many outdoor activities the camp had to offer, enjoying delicious food and having fun, living, working and playing together away from school and home. We welcome them back this afternoon.

Have a great weekend

STUDENT SHOWCASE

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 4?

Year 4 Craft Power Incursion

Our Year 4 students recently had an unforgettable hands-on experience during the Craft Power incursion! As part of our unit on forces and simple machines, students put their learning into practice by constructing their very own Formula One race cars using woodwork tools. Guided by our fantastic leader, Anatoli, they mastered the use of hammers, nails and pliers to bring their creations to life. This engaging incursion not only enhanced their understanding of mechanical concepts but also built confidence and teamwork skills.

LITERACY CORNER

As part of our persuasive writing unit, our Year 4 students put their skills to the test by writing letters to a principal of their choice. Their mission? Convince them to add or change something about our already fantastic school! From building canteens to creating new playgrounds, our students showcased creativity, passion and strong arguments. Here are some of their fascinating letters!

Dear Mrs Virtuoso,

Isn’t the point of school for students to learn responsibility? Building a canteen in our school not only creates a fundraising opportunity for a better school, but it also takes pressure off parents who provide food and most importantly it teaches students responsibility. Imagine a school with responsible students and relieved parents dropping children at school every day. Together we can turn our dreams into reality.

Building a canteen in our school is something no one can disagree with. Who doesn’t want our already awesome school to become even better with more stationery, a whole new school playground for everyone to enjoy? Even better, with extra money we don’t need, we must help the world and donate money to charity, helping not only OSPS students but even more children who are in need.

Doesn’t every principal want to look out of their office window and see happy and relieved parents dropping kids off to school every day? Building a canteen in our school means that busy parents don’t have to prepare food for their children each day. They can simply give their children some money for lunch and it will reduce a lot of weight off their shoulders. Research shows that 94% of children who are good at learning have relieved and relaxed parents who guide them through their school years. Together we must make these stressed parents happy and relaxed.

Lastly but most importantly building a canteen in our school will teach children responsibility. We will teach children to manage money on important things and not to buy unnecessary items. Students of OSPS will be able to prepare for the future when they are grown-ups and need to live by themselves. Which school wants to be known for raising irresponsible students?

It is without a doubt that our already fantastic school has to build a school canteen to make it even better. It will create a wonderful fundraiser for our school, it takes pressure off parents and last but not least it teaches students responsibility with money management. Now go and call some workers to come build a school canteen!

Sincerely,

Elly W

Dear Mr Albers,

Imagine you wake up. You go to school, enter your classroom or office and then suddenly remember that… YOU FORGOT YOUR LUNCH!!! Mr Albers, I, as a student of Oakleigh South Primary School, unite with other students to enforce the act of… getting a school canteen for emergencies like this! I am simply here on account of the simple or brain-rotting hard task of persuading you Mr Albers to get a school canteen! It’s not too hard is it?

To begin, if we set up a school canteen which would benefit our school MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of tonnes of stress would be lifted off our students’ parents’ shoulders. Imagine that your parents are sooo very stressed and busy. They can just spend some money and then they don’t have to worry about what you eat! It’s so great!

Next, if we build a school canteen it would definitely teach our amazing students here at Oakleigh South Primary School… responsibility. You don’t want your students becoming adults without an idea of what responsibility is do you? Building a school canteen will teach our students to be responsible and make their own choices. Are you with me!?

Finally, a school canteen will be a permanent fundraiser meaning that a decent amount of money will go towards improving our majestic school. We must build a school canteen or I will dig a hole in the middle of my classroom crawl into it and I will not move. We must and I mean must build a school canteen!

To sum it all up, I know you’ve been convinced so you can just build one! I know that it’s expensive but who cares??? It will benefit our school and you know it! You absolutely must build a school canteen because if you do the money that parents pay will replenish your money source and your students will finally be happy! Isn’t that what you wanted?

Sincerely,
Arthur F

Dear Mr Cantlon,

Do you want to see this school filled with rubbish? Putting more bins around the school will stop people from littering, have fewer overflowing bins and make our school look much cleaner! Imagine how clean the school would be!

To begin with, if students are on the oval and need a bin to put their wrappers in, some people will just chuck their wrappers behind a tree or through a fence! This is because there are no bins on the oval and students want to stay with their friends without losing precious playtime. For example, I have sadly seen many students eat then litter on school grounds. This is why we should add more bins around the school.

Another reason is that bins are almost always overflowing! For example, the bins are always full to the brim and rubbish is flying everywhere! The environment is dying! Is this what the principals imagined for our school?

Finally, putting more bins around the school will make our school look clean. For example, I heard a former student of OSPS visited and the former student exclaimed, “This school was much cleaner when I was a student here!” Do you want future students to study in a dirty environment?

Please consider my request. The cleanliness of our school is decided by your decision.

Yours sincerely,
Winston L

Dear Mr Cantlon,

Homework is just a big burden on us so can you please stop giving us homework? (Unless it’s really important). When we get home we have a lot of things to do before we do our homework such as tutoring classes. By the time we get home to do our homework we are already tired and broken. We are like this every day! We’ve already learnt enough at school. Homework is sometimes too hard, doesn’t make sense or is too easy. Also, homework takes away time to relax or be with nature. Homework causes headaches as students might be really tired or there is too much homework. I am writing this as a representative for all the students who do not want homework.

I once came home feeling very tired from school and when I went into my room I saw a pile of homework on my desk. Think about what you would feel like if you were me—show some empathy. Research shows that when you are tired you can’t focus and complete your best work. Therefore, there is no point trying to do homework when you are tired.

Sometimes you can’t finish your homework because you might be too occupied on other days. When it’s time to hand it in it causes anxiety so you might not do well in tests or school tasks. Don’t you want students to set a good example for kids joining OSPS? You don’t want a school full of anxious students. Anxiety leads to all sorts of other health issues which we certainly don’t want children to experience.

Homework causes headaches because sometimes you have to do a lot of homework and thinking. Headaches can make students suffer and may lead to serious issues like dizziness or even brain problems. You might even get a tension headache which is caused when people spend too much time in straining positions.

After all, homework has been a burden for students for thousands of years. Remember, it’s not only me who doesn’t want to do homework. Online resources say that over 70% of students don’t want homework—over half, nearly all the students!

Thank you for reading my letter and I hope you can change the homework policy immediately.

Yours sincerely,

Loki

YEAR 4 REFLECTIONS: CELBRATING A WONDERFUL YEAR!

As the year draws to a close, our Year 4 students have taken time to reflect on their incredible journey this year. From exciting projects and new friendships to valuable lessons learned, they’ve shared heartfelt memories and personal growth. Their reflections highlight the joy, challenges and achievements that have made this year unforgettable. We’re so proud of how much they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for these amazing learners!

“Ugh! We are finally here!” I exclaimed. When the bus finally turned off, the bus was full of cheers since we had arrived at the MCG. The MCG was one of my favourite moments in Year 4! It was fantastic when I saw all my football idols in the statues. Next, we quickly ran to the bus again because we were going to the Eureka Tower. When we arrived a few minutes later, we played a VR game and did some fun activities. This was just one piece of my Year 4 journey and it was a blast!

I have achieved lots academically, but my favourite subject was maths. In maths, I learned algebraic notation, angles, linear equations and, lastly, the hardest part—algebraic worded questions! I’ve achieved so much in maths but also in writing. In writing, I learned how to write fabulous persuasives. This is proof that Year 4 was such a hard-working and fast-paced year.

In Year 5, I look forward to our house captain speeches since I want to follow in my brother’s footsteps as he was an art captain. I also look forward to surfing on our Year 5 excursion. At the end of Year 4, I am excited to find out my new teacher for Grade 5. I also look forward to learning more academic tips and tricks and striving to reach my best.

Because of all this, I must admit Year 4 was definitely my favourite grade at Oakleigh South!

Ryan C

Every dot on my black paper was placed with care and effort. Recently in Art, the Year 4s have been creating Aboriginal dot paintings. A green turtle lay in the middle of the void, surrounded by dots of white, orange, brown, green and red.

I ran, I jumped, I threw. I admired my two ribbons: 4th and 3rd. I wasn’t upset that I didn’t get 1st—I just wanted a ribbon.

At the start of 2024, I thought, “What is this BONMATHS thingy?” It’s actually BODMAS/BIDMAS/BEDMAS/PEDMAS. BODMAS stands for brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction.

Being part of 4AS has been great! Next year, I hope to be in the same class as Aiden and look forward to Year 5 camp.

Asher

As I jumped off the bus for the excursion, I knew that it would be a day to remember. The excursion was the best one I’ve ever been to! When I stepped into the MCG, I was wowed by everything. The games room was obviously my favourite with all the fun games to play. But the Eureka Tower was just another experience! I could not believe how high we were and how much we could see. My personal favourite was the VR. When we were on the rollercoaster (not really because it’s VR) my chair dipped down and I felt like I was falling! Then we started flying!

Another thing I loved about Year 4 was experiencing Athletics Day for the first time. I could not believe that in my first year of athletics I made it into district for high jump. I had also made it into division, but I was on holiday and only arrived the day before, so I didn’t compete. Athletics was a very exciting experience and I can’t wait for it again!

I’ve heard so much about Year 5 from my friends. They said that they had a fabulous time. The thing I’m most excited for though is camp. My favourite activity is camping. I heard that we are going to go surfing. I have tried surfing before, but it didn’t exactly go so well, so I’m hoping that in Year 5 it will go a lot better. Year 5 sounds like a blast to me and I can’t wait to go!

UNIFORM SHOP CLOSURE

Please be advised that the uniform shop will be closed on Friday 6th December.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage families to plan ahead for their uniform needs. The shop will reopen on its regular schedule following this date.

Thank you for your understanding.

LOST PROPERTY

We currently have a significant number of uniforms in our lost property. Between now and the end of term, we will be processing all items. Our goal is to clear the lost property by the end of the year. Any unclaimed items without names will be donated to charity or added to the second-hand uniform shop.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of lost clothing, we are unable to return named items directly to students.

We encourage both students and parents to check the lost property for any missing named items. All named items will be displayed on the racks for easy identification.

Thank you for your cooperation!
