PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This week the Year 5’s and 6’s completed their intense swimming program at GESAC which is always a valuable program for children to learn the basics of swimming and water safety. This program gave students the opportunity to extend their swimming skills in levelled classes.
We welcomed 12 students from Tamba Higashi Primary School in Japan for a 10 day Melbourne experience. Staying with 6 OSPS host families, they will experience OSPS school life and go on a variety or trips and excursions in Melbourne. They are looking forward to Matsuri Dress up day next Tuesday 6th August! All OSPS children can dress up in something Japanese themed and enjoy sushi, if purchased through the parent group Sushi Day event.
Today is Principals’ Day and I extend my heartfelt thanks to the OSPS principal class team of Ron Cantlon, Erik Albers, Sue Jackson, Anthony Rowe for their incredible work in leading our wonderful school.
Erik Albers and I attended the Victorian Principal’s Conference this week where it was reassuring to hear that the research and evidenced backed ‘explicit teaching’ approach is found to be the most effective way to educate students, a teaching philosophy that Ron has engrained in the school since his arrival 35 years ago. Presentations also included how successful schools have established high expectations on behaviour and connecting children to schools through engagement opportunities (e.g. productions, sport, STEM, sustainability, languages and the arts). OSPS is certainly on the right track!
This Saturday will be the first parent group function post pandemic, the DJ Bingo night. The location will be in the staff room. Tickets are still available via trybooking and can be purchased at the door (with cash). Check out all the details further down in the newsletter.
Ron has returned to work, however part time so that he can maximise his recovery and rehab. He is working Wednesdays and Thursdays presently. I will remain the Acting Principal on the other 3 days of the week.

SCHOOL MATTERS
IMPORTANT REMINDER: PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG
While we understand that some families may bring their dogs around our school grounds, it is crucial to keep our environment clean and safe for everyone. Here are some key points to remember:
- Bring Your Own Waste Bags: Our school does not provide dog waste bags, so please remember to bring your own.
- Dispose Properly: Always pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste in the appropriate bins. Proper disposal of dog waste helps maintain a clean and pleasant environment for all.

ANNUAL JAPANESE MATSURI DRESS-UP AND SUSHI DAY
We are excited to remind you about our Annual Japanese Matsuri Dress-Up and Sushi Day on August 6th!
On this day, all year levels will participate in special in-class programs, and we will hold a special assembly to announce the best-dressed students and a teacher, and Origami Competition winners.
This year is even more special as we have Japanese students from Tamba visiting us after 5 years! They will be joining us and are very excited to celebrate the day with everyone at OSPS.
Students can celebrate Japanese culture by dressing up in colourful kimonos, karate gear, ninja costumes, or as their favourite Pokémon, Studio Ghibli characters, anime heroes, samurai, geishas, sumo wrestlers, or Japanese folklore creatures like kitsune and tengu.
ORIGAMI COMPETITION
We are thrilled to announce our upcoming Origami Competition as part of Matsuri Day on August 6th! This competition is a fantastic way for students to engage with Japanese culture and showcase their creativity.

- Prep – Grade 2: Make a special origami design chosen for you and learn the basics in a fun way.
- Grade 3: Create an origami of your favourite animal.
- Grade 4 – 6: Choose any origami design you like. Create anything you want, such as animals, flowers, or unique designs.
Please submit your origami work to Sumiko Sensei by July 26th, 2024 (end of Week 2).
SUPERHIRO DRESS UP DAY
On Wednesday the 14th August, the whole school will be recognising the ‘National Week Against Bullying and Violence’ 12th to 16th August, by dressing up as their favourite Superhero. We will be promoting and instilling once again, the importance of being an UPSTANDER and being kind and inclusive of everyone.
The theme for 2024 is ‘Everyone Belongs’, when we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It’s about embracing who we are, respecting everyone’s differences and standing up together against unkindness. At OSPS we encourage our students to speak up to create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected.
