PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WE’RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD…… THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ!!!

Two amazing shows down, two amazing shows to go!!

The week got off to a great start on Monday evening when the Emerald cast performed the first show of The Wizard of Oz. Wow, our students are so talented and absolutely everyone who was on the stage gave it their all. Then yesterday afternoon, they did it all again at the matinee show… they were amazing.

Tonight, and tomorrow a night, the Ruby cast will be performing their shows. I know this cast will be just as sensational and I cannot wait to be mesmerised by their acting, singing and dancing.

At OSPS we are very proud of the quality production performances we deliver, but it takes hours and hours of hard work behind the scenes, working together as a team so the students have the best experience possible. To the staff and parents who have helped, I thank you. To every year 6 student, thank you for your exceptional efforts too.

There are still some tickets available for tonight and tomorrow night’s shows. These can be booked through the link: https://www.trybooking.com/CKNYY

Considering the recent incident involving a student from another school being injured on their way home, reminded us that the safety of our students is always our number one priority.  We wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some advice around safe travel practices when going to and from school, which you can support you in discussing your own child’s travel arrangements.

  • Always travel directly to and from school and avoiding making stops or side trips along the way. If you are catching public transport, walk directly to the bus stop or train station.
  • Where possible travel in pairs or groups. You may want to arrange to meet friends and walk to school together.
  • Remain alert to your surroundings and try to avoid using your phone while walking.
  • If you are getting picked up, remain on school grounds until your ride has arrived.
  • If there is anything that makes a student feel uncomfortable in any way, they should leave the area and report any concerns to an adult or phone the police.

Just a reminder there will be a whole school assembly on Friday at 1.50pm before the children will be dismissed at 2.30pm. The assembly will be streamed online on OSPStv.

Lastly, remember to keep on reading and do your Mathletics and Reading Eggs whenever you can. Have a restful and safe break whether you are at home or away on holidays.

See you all back at school on Monday 2nd October.

R U OK? DAY AT OSPS

Thursday 14th September is our National Day of Action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs.

The theme this year is ‘I’m here to hear’. Our students will be participating in important lessons on the day, promoting and instilling once again in our students the importance of being UPSTANDERS and supporting our friends when they are in need.

Asking the important question R U OK? And the very important questions and support that come after.
R U OK wrist bands will also be on sale for $2 and money raised will be donated to Kids Helpline.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

VISUAL ART SHOWCASE

Term 3 in the art room has begun with the bang crash and excitement of the front of the main building being renovated.

It’s a long walk to the art room, at the moment, but the children are enjoying the coming and goings of trucks as well as conversations with the near-by chickens.

It makes for many a conversation starter with the younger children.

The Preps have been busy making ‘The Wizard of Oz’ handprints, The 1’s have completed their ‘Wizard of Oz’ collages.

These were of such a high standard and one of our favourite activities this year.

The 2’s are having a great time, making tinmen and funny munchkins that have had us all laughing.

The 3s have completed a paper weaving task and have explored Oil Pastels and Vincent Van Gogh’s Stary Night, which is always a favourite among the children.

The 4’s have focused on construction making tinmen using all sorts of found objects that were glued and later spray painted silver.

The grade 5s have been mask making and print making.

And the grade 6’s have created the most magical ‘street art’ themed yellow brick road.

We can’t wait to showcase this years completed artworks at the production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ so make sure you put it in your calendar for this week.

We have well over 3000 artworks on display from every year level and if we had the space, this year we could probably have showcased 1000s more!

What an exceptional display of talent we have had this year.

The finalists of the annual colouring competition also resulted in over 400 entries.

The winners of which will be announced in assembly at the beginning of next term.

Have a great and well earned holiday everyone.

From Miss Hunt, Miss Cato and Miss Em.

JAPANESE SHOWCASE

Konnichiwa! We have some exciting news to share from the Japanese Team!

Japanese Speech Contest

On August 27th, Ashley and Racshna participated in the annual Japanese Speech Contest organised by the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria. A total of 39 students competed in the Year 6 and 5 division. Students had to deliver both a prepared speech and a creative one in front of an audience. Each speech lasted 60-90 seconds, and they were not allowed to use notes during their performance. We are thrilled to announce that Ashley and Racshna won first prize! This marks the first time our school has received an award in this contest. Congratulations!

Japanese Dress Up Day

Mark your calendars for Japanese Matsuri Day on Tuesday, October 24th, Week 4 of Term 4. ‘Matsuri’ means ‘festival’ in Japanese, and it’s your chance to dress up as a Kimono, Ninja, Samurai, Karate Kid, Pikachu, Sushi, or an Anime character! Start brainstorming your costume ideas and get ready to celebrate Japanese Matsuri Day in style!

Teacher Assistant Volunteers

This term, we were fortunate to have three wonderful volunteers: Yuri, Mai, and Yudai. They enthusiastically shared their knowledge of Japanese culture and provided valuable assistance to our students. Mai read Japanese books to Year 1 and 2 students, Yudai played soccer with older students, and Yuri spent time with younger students during breaks. We appreciate their hard work. While Mai and Yudai are returning to Japan, Yuri will continue supporting us until the end of the year. We will also have two new assistants joining us next term!

Zoom Session with Shin-izumi Primary School

Several of our Grade 5 students had the incredible opportunity to converse with students in Japan via Zoom. They introduced themselves in Japanese and had a great time. Although we have only talked twice with Shin-izumi Primary School in Tokyo, both sides want to engage more next term with more students. We are also planning Zoom sessions with three more schools in Tanba, Japan.

Black Belt Club

This term, our Black Belt Club met every two weeks during Monday lunchtime for exciting activities, including making onigiri, designing cupcakes, crafting clay sushi, and participating in challenging blooket game competitions. Currently, we have 31 students in the Black Belt Club. To join, students must demonstrate proficiency in reading 44 or more Hiragana characters. We will conduct more testing sessions during lunchtime next term, so we encourage more students to aim for a black belt!

Prep Japanese Rainbows

You may have noticed the beautiful rainbows hanging from the ceiling in the Prep building. Our Prep students spent the term creating these as part of their Japanese colour lessons. A big thank you to Mrs. Bathols for displaying this lovely artwork!

YEAR 2 SHOWCASE

Year 2 Eggs-po

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall…

What would happen if the King’s men were actually able to save Humpty Dumpty, but then he became afraid of heights?

This term in our Integrated Studies unit, Make It, Move It, the Year 2 students have been following the Design Thinking process to develop a new way for Humpty Dumpty to get back up on the wall.

The students have been incredibly creative and showed great empathy for their eggs whilst they tried to resolve his problem.

We were so egg-cited to share our student creations and inventions in our open afternoon last Thursday. Thank you to all of the families who came along to support our learning this term!

On Tuesday this week, we are off to Legoland Discovery Centre to further develop our Design Thinking skills with an educator led session.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

YEAR 2 LITERACY CORNER

This term we have been busy developing our persuasive and narrative writing skills.

Our persuasive writing skills were on display during Book Week where we were convincing others to read our chosen book. Here are a few suggestions that might persuade you to pick up a new book during the holidays…

Harry Potter – he is brave, fights for justice and I love fantasy books! He also goes on dangerous quests with his friends. Ethan T (2CD)

Ninja Kid, Nelson Kane – he woke up on his 10th birthday and everything had changed. He was the last kid on Earth. There’s always a very good story behind the scenes. Remy (2TM)

The 26-Storey Treehouse, Captain Woodenhead – he is cool and brave. The story is very adventurous and also funny because ‘laughter is the best medicine’. Edward (2SC)
