STUDENT SHOWCASE
SENIOR PERFORMING ARTS
VSSS Dance
Year 5 students participating in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular in Mass Dance had their final rehearsal before their dress rehearsals and shows at John Cain Arena in September.
The students travelled to Maroondah Nets where they completed their very first costume run of the show. It was a very busy day and there was plenty of excitement, sequins and even a surprise flash mob from the teachers! All of the students did an incredible job dancing with enthusiasm and energy throughout the day.
VSSS Choir
Year 5 students have been to their second rehearsal at the Melbourne Town Hall. It was great to see some of the other musicians, singers and dancers from the upcoming show. Only a few more weeks until the 2 dress rehearsals and the 2 big shows.
Tickets to the 2023 Victorian State Schools Spectacular are now on sale and can be purchased through Ticketek www.ticketek.com.au/spectacular.
There are two performances on Saturday the 9th of September at 1.00pm & 6.30pm. Oakleigh South students will be performing in both shows.
THE WIZARD OF OZ
We are now into our final weeks of rehearsals for our Year 6 production, The Wizard Of Oz. Both casts are now running the show in sequence and have been amazing learning their lines, songs and choreography over the last term. They can’t wait to perform to everyone during the last week of term. Tickets are available for all shows via TryBooking. See Compass for further details.
SPLASH
Level 4 students performed their production Splash at the end of last term. They accepted and rose to the challenge for these performances with great success. It was certainly a great learning and performance developing experience for all students.
SCHOOL BAND
Our band have been having regular Wednesday lunchtime rehearsals during this term. They have learnt Somewhere over the Rainbow, which we will be performing at assembly in week 9.
YEAR 5 SHOWCASE
During this term, students in year 5 have participated in a range of extra-curricular and class activities. We’ve had many of our students perform in VSSS Dance Spectacular’s, Senior Athletics, Girls Football, VSSS Choir, Robotics, Gem Club and Writing club. We’ve been extremely impressed with the teamwork, respectful conduct, and students’ willingness to take on so many learning challenges.
In class, our Integrated Studies Unit for this term has been focused on Cultural Diversity and Inclusion. The culmination of this unit has been a project called ‘Who am I?’, where students researched and presented projects on their family backgrounds and cultures. Their projects were completed at home and represented an enormous effort by them and their families. The resulting projects have been completed in detail and presented with great pride and enthusiasm in class. It’s been a pleasure to have been able to participate in these shared cultural journeys’ and celebrate the rich diversity within our year level and school.
Most recently, we have also had the pleasure of hosting an incursion by the Wanyara team of indigenous educators. Through their instruction, our students were fortunate to have learned about traditional dance, art practices, story-telling and games.
We’d like to thank parents for their support with enabling home learning activities such as Mathletics, A.R, Math’s and also our term Integrated Studies projects. Thank you also to all our general staff and leadership team, who volunteer to make lunch time and after-school extra-curricular learning opportunities possible.
RESILIENCE PROJECT
GEM- WANYARA INCURSION
Gratitude- We’re grateful for the Wanyara team for teaching us their hunting tools and how our First Nations people take care and manage the land.
Empathy- We had empathy for the First Nations team that led us in the dance routine as their ancestors weren’t allowed to got to lots of places because of their skin tone in the past.
Mindfulness- Mindful during the art we created when we wrote a story using Indigenous symbols. Another mindful activity was Yarn which we learnt about the culture of the First Nations people and how they survived and lived off the land.
Over the last few weeks our Year 5 students have been learning all about the important life skill of mindfulness during their TRP lessons. Our students explored the influence of music that can have on our emotions. They had opportunities to listen to happy, calming, and sad songs whilst they filled their buckets with images.
YEAR 5 LITERACY CORNER
The Year 5 students have completed a 4 week poetry unit as part of their writing program this term.
To coincide with our integrated unit on cultural diversity and inclusion, we have explored the concept of Country and what it means to Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people by writing our own verse in the story, ‘Somebody’s Land’ by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing.
We also wrote our own ‘Sorry’ poems after researching the stolen generation. To explore the concepts of rhyme, repetition, rhythm and sound patterns we wrote limericks, diamante, haiku, cinquain and acrostic poems.
The students enjoyed expressing their creative side and had fun experimenting with new ways of writing.
OSPS SPORT
SPORT AT OAKLEIGH SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
District Athletics
Last Thursday, OSPS took a squad of 61` students to the district Athletics Carnival which was held at Duncan McKinnon reserve.
All students performed remarkable well, doing their best at every event and showing great sportsmanship throughout. As usual, our exemplary behaviour was on show during the day. We even had some wonderful Year 6 students supporting the teachers on the day.
Of particular note were the relays. OSPS won 5 relays which means those teams go through to Division which will be held on 10th of October.
A huge thank you to Mr. Mooney and the P.E staff who have coordinated the program. Our Year 6 teachers and Miss Gunning who train teachers during lunchtime and to those staff and parents that helped on the day.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS RESULTS
Congratulations to the 36 students who will progress to Division Athletics on October 10th.

Thanks to the generosity of our families, we have helped them get closer to reaching this goal!
FATHERS DAY STALL
Last week, Parent Group hosted their 2nd Father’s Day Stall. Over the two days the stall ran, we saw many excited children ready to shop for their dad or special person in their lives.
It was also nice watching students put their math skills into action and calculate what their purchases would cost and how much change they should get.
Parent Group would sincerely like to thank all that helped over the two days the stall was running.
These events are only made possible with our wonderful volunteers. If you are interested in future volunteering opportunities, please email osparentgroup67@gmail.com.
