PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

This week OSPS is celebrating Book Week. On Friday the 25th, we ask that students come dressed as their favourite character from a book. Students will be asked to bring a gold coin donation which will go towards purchasing new books for the school library. The library has been decorated by our literacy team and looks magnificent. The students will have a visit from renowned author and illustrator Heath McKenzie and there is a ‘Design a Book Cover’ competition. We can’t wait to see all the student’s favourite book characters parading on Friday morning, with the juniors starting at 9.00am and the senior students parading at 9.50am. Parents are welcome to attend these parades. It will be fantastic to see the whole school come together celebrating books and reading!

The year 6 students are in full swing with their production practises of ‘The Wizard of Oz Jnr’. Before you know it, they will be performing in front of their family and friends at the end of the term. There will be four performances, Monday 11th September, Tuesday 12th (Matinee at 4pm), Wednesday 13th September and Thursday 14th September at 7pm. Tickets are on sale to the year 6 families and will be available to the public this Friday at 10am via Trybooking.com.

Lastly what a fun filled junior assembly yesterday! Our preps performed so well on stage for their first time, singing at the top of their voices. Well done preps! We had many junior contributors who speak so confidently in front of a hall full of people. This is a great skill to develop in our junior children.

SUBS FOR YOU LUNCH PROGRAM

Beginning next Thursday, 25 August, School Council have approved for Parent Group to trial with a new lunch order provider on Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of Term 3. Subway (The Links) and Canteen Hub are very pleased to be able to offer the ‘Subs For You School Lunch Program’ to our school.

Orders will close at 12pm the day prior to your selected day (eg. Orders for Thursday, 25 August will close on Wednesday, 24 August at 12pm).

Instructions on how to order and register are attached to this Compass.

FETE THANK YOU

Once again our Fete was a huge success and it was wonderful to see our community working together to achieve such great results. We have finally received the last of the invoices for the event and can now proudly tell you of the results!

The Fete would not be possible without our most generous sponsors and donors from local businesses and businesses from afar, friends and families. Thank you to our many special guests, community stalls and     performance groups. Without your contribution the day would not have been possible. We hope to see you next year.

We also need to acknowledge our teaching and office staff for their dedication leading up to the Fete and on the day, especially to our Fete Coordinator Nikki Virtuoso and her amazing team of volunteer Fete Team parents.

Thank you to the many parents and volunteers who gave up their time   before, during and after the fete to help in various ways. It is also wonderful to see many of our ex-parents and students offer assistance on or before the day.

The final figure was over $90,000, which is a tremendous effort considering the weather on the day.

We hope to see you next year! Thank you everyone!

SOUTH OAKLEIGH SECONDARY COLLEGE PRESENTS SEUSSICAL JNR

South Oakleigh Secondary College are performing Seussical Jnr. The cast have been rehearsing hard and would love the community to come to their show and they had a full house!

Illness at School

We are starting to see an increase in numbers of children becoming unwell with sniffles, cough, and sore throat.

If your child is displaying symptoms of being unwell – fever, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, tummy-ache, nausea, they are not well enough to come to school.

If you need to administer panadol or nurofen to your child before school, they are not well enough to come to school.

Student with highly contagious conditions like impetigo or “school sores”, conjunctivitis must not attend school until all symptoms are cleared, as per Department of Health requirements., conjunctivitis must not attend school until all symptoms are cleared, as per Department of Health requirements.

Please consider the health and wellbeing of other students and staff.

If your child develops any sign of illness whilst at school, we will request that you or an adult nominated by you, collect your child from school within an hour.

It is also timely to remind your child about hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue. Cough into your elbow, dispose of tissues into a bin, and wash hands regularly with soap and water, or use sanitizer.

VICTORIAN STATE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR

OSPS Year 5 students for Mass Dance and Mass Choir have been rehearsing very hard over several months! We can’t wait for them to perform!

The 2023 Victorian State Schools Spectacular will be held on Saturday 9 September. The performance times are 1:00pm and 6:30pm at John Cain Arena, Melbourne Park (show time 2 hours 45 mins)

Tickets are on sale from 11am on Wednesday 7 June. Adult: $40, Concession: $30, Child (U15): $20 (a $6.30 service fee per transaction applies on all purchases)

STUDENT SHOWCASE

HEATH McKENZIE WORKSHOP

Last week, OSPS students from P – 2 and then 3 – 6 really enjoyed their visit from the popular author and illustrator, Heath McKenzie.

There were two workshops held in the school hall where Heath inspired the students to become involved in drawing activities.

They learnt how to draw different types of characters using simple shapes, and then expanding with finer detail.

If you would like to purchase any of his books, please order them online through this portal and they will be delivered to OSPS and distributed to your child.

PREP SHOWCASE

The Preps have had quite a busy few weeks! The 100th day of school is an exciting milestone for our students.

We are celebrating 100 days of learning, growing and all of the achievements we have accomplished throughout the year.

Our count down chart had finally reached its target, which meant a dress up and class party day with lots of fun ‘one hundred’ activities.

The Zoo excursion was our next adventure! The sun was shining, the animals were out to play, and the Prep children had a marvellous day exploring and learning.

We are so proud of the Prep students and their behaviour at the Zoo. It was exceptional! We would also like to thank our parent helpers who came along to assist us with our excursion.

We couldn’t have done it without you!

PREP GEM

Discovering our GEM Superpowers.

The Preps have been uncovering their amazing GEM Superpowers and getting to know the special tools that make us feel happy, safe, and strengthen our hearts.

Ever said “thank you” for something nice? That’s gratitude! It’s like a magic trick that warms us up inside when we’re thankful, like for our families or a big bear hug. We’re also exploring how our families are like puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly.

Imagine being a feelings detective! Empathy is like putting on special glasses that help us understand how others feel. When we see someone sad or happy, we can imagine what they’re feeling. And guess what? We’re learning to say “stop” when something feels wrong. That’s called personal boundaries, and it’s like making a safe space around us.

Did you ever notice your tummy going up and down when you breathe? That’s mindfulness! It’s about paying attention to our breath and how we feel right now. It’s like taking a peaceful adventure inside our own heads, where we can chill out and think about good things. We’re also finding out how our bodies grow, kind of like little plants.

PREP LITERACY CORNER

In Prep, we have been busy working on our writing skills. After our wonderful visit to the Zoo, the students were super excited to write all of their highlights down as a recount piece. The students have been working hard to make sure that they produce their best writing including punctuation, finger spacing, sounding out unknown words and WOW words. The Preps did an amazing job recounting their experience at the Zoo. They wrote about their favourite animals but also about how much fun they had with their peers. It was amazing to see all the Preps try their best and write their own recount piece. They produced such wonderful work!

Zoe (PNM) has so much fun at the Zoo and her favourite animals were the seals and turtles. Beautiful writing, Zoe!

Hayley (PNM) loved the bus ride to and from the Zoo and her favourite animal were the Giraffes. Excellent work on using exclamation marks!

Sam (PHM)’s favourite animals were the butterflies, seals and a snow leopard. Wonderful writing, Sam!

Leo (PHM) loved being in the Monkey Group and enjoyed so many animals. Fantastic work on using a WOW word in your writing!

SHARE THE DIGNITY

For the month of August, Parent Group will be accepting donations as part of the Dignity Drive run twice yearly by Share the Dignity.

Share the Dignity is a women’s charity in Australia, that works to make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough. They distribute period products to women, girls, and anyone who menstruates who needs support. When someone is doing it tough, the last thing on their mind should be dealing with their period.

If you would like to donate to those in need, all products in original packaging, including pads, tampons, reusable pads, period undies, menstrual cups and incontinence products will be accepted and appreciated. All donations can be placed at the office in the donation bin.
