The Year 6’s had a special visitor to the Art Room, renowned artist Daniel Butterworth. He’s a professional artist and a school teacher that is known for painting on scrap cardboard and for using house paints that he mixes on the cardboard as he works. He has been an Archibald finalist and a Moran Portraiture finalist and he believes he has painted over 2000 self portraits!
We spoke to the year six children about his career and about using things around the house to make art like coffee and even vegemite. He encouraged the children to draw every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes to improve their skills. His most important message was, “just have fun creating”.
They worked with Miss Hunt and the art team the week before on drawing portraits of the lion, the scarecrow and the tin man in pencil, onto cardboard before Mr B arrived. They then watched a demonstration and set about using the paints to complete a portrait that will be displayed in the foyer for the production of The Wizard of Oz Jr.
The children had a great time and got very messy. We even discovered some hidden talents. Each child experimented with colour mixing and mark making. We can’t wait to see them up on production night.
