PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Last Thursday evening, Martin Heppell from the Resilience Project presented to the school’s parent community. Over 120 parents attended which was fantastic to see. Martin delivered the message of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness, a message our students are becoming very familiar with. GEM is taught and celebrated across all year levels with it being added to our school assembly for students to be recognised for their GEM contributions. The feedback from the parents has been extremely positive. Thank you for supporting this very important program which will build our student’s resilience and promote their wellbeing.
Yesterday, the Junior Assembly saw the first Valued Students awards being presented for the year. The prep to Year 3 students were very excited to receive their awards. The children who participated and assisted in running the assembly did an amazing job. It’s hard to believe that these children are 6 – 9 years old, speaking in front of an audience, on a stage and under lights. The junior assembly provides our younger children with an opportunity to showcase their leadership abilities at a very young age! A big thank to Mr Eykman and his ICT team who organize our assemblies each week, connecting the students and families to the assembly by OSPStv.
Finally, today sees the last Wednesday that our prep children will be involved in assessments. Thank you to every parent that has attended these sessions, which has given our prep teachers a chance to spend one on one time with the child and the parents.
All prep children will start full time school next week on Monday 7th March.
Enjoy the weekend ahead everyone.

RESLIENCE PROJECT NEWS
After our huge launch last week with Martin Heppell and Hugh van Cuylenburg we are so proud to be an official TRP Partnership School. The lessons started last week in our classrooms and the GEM buzz around the school is awesome.
At our whole school assemblies our students will be awarded a prestigious award for displaying any of the following principles- Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. There will be one award given out in each Year Level. Kindness is contagious at OSPS!

WORLD MATHS DAY
World Maths Day is one of the world’s largest global educational events and this year it will kick off on Wednesday 23rd March! This day aims to get primary and secondary school students excited and enthusiastic about learning maths. We are constantly using maths in our everyday lives, from telling the time, counting and adding, to measuring and using money – maths is everywhere!
At Oakleigh South Primary School, we love to provide engaging and challenging maths lessons at every level. We also use Mathletics to help complement our learning. This year the “World’s Largest Online Maths Competition” is back! You can join millions of students across the globe as they celebrate World Maths Day and compete in Live Mathletics challenges. There will be 20 x one-minute challenges available.
The goal is simple: get as many questions correct as you can within one minute and be crowned the winning Mathlete! You can earn 1 point for each correct answer that goes towards your score. Winners will progress through to the global finals, which will take place two weeks after World Maths Day. They’ll go head to head with three peers from around the world in a live-streamed knockout tournament, with prizes for the champions. You might make it onto the World Maths Day Hall of Fame just like Alexander Z did last year, achieving 3rd place in the world! Go Alexander!
This event runs for 48 hours to cover all time zones. Your child will automatically be able to take part using their school subscription- just log in on the day and let the games begin! We encourage all students to take part, try their best and most importantly have fun. May the best Mathlete win!

STUDENT SHOWCASE
CHICKS HAVE ARRIVED IN THE VILLAGE
There has been much excitement this week as the eggs, incubators and chicks have arrived in the year 3 Village from Henny Penny Hatching.
Here is a very little taste of the beginning of their OSPS journey.
We already have 7 chicks hatched with many more eggs sitting under the warm lights ready to pop out of their shells.
OSPS has successfully provided this wonderful opportunity to our year 3 children for over 20 years.
Most of the chicks will be returned to the farm once they grow too big to keep at school, however we will keep around 6 hens and raise them for the year. In June/July they will start laying eggs for the year 3 cooking program and students to enjoy.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

YEAR 4 RESILIENCE PROJECT
Last week, Martin from the Resilience Project came to O.S.P.S to talk about GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness).
We learned that gratitude means to be thankful for what you have. Empathy means to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and mindfulness means to have the ability to be ‘in the moment’. He also explained the story of ‘DIS’. In the story, an Indian boy who couldn’t speak English properly kept saying “DIS” instead of saying “I’m grateful for this”.
In our classroom we have a ‘DIS’ wall. Each day, one table will fill out something they are grateful for and stick it on the wall. That way we can focus on all the good things we have in our life. Thank you, Martin for teaching us about GEM.

4AS GEM REFLECTION
G – We are grateful for our beautiful school and our awesome class, 4AS.
E – To all the people overseas living in places where they don’t feel safe
M – Take time out of your busy day to do something you enjoy doing such as reading, running, colouring or going for walks.
