PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
On Monday the year 6 students and staff set off on their trip to the Grampians for their 5-day camp. From the reports that I have received so far, the children are having a great time, experiencing the many outdoor activities the camp has to offer, enjoying the delicious food and having fun, living, working and playing together away from school and home. We welcome them back on Friday.
Last Friday afternoon/night the parent group hosted the annual OSPS Disco. It was great to have this event back up and running again and … the children had an absolute ball. Thank you to DJ Mr. Eykman who was excellent in organising games and great tunes for the children to dance to and thank you to the staff who came along to support the event!
The very excited year 2 students and teachers are putting the finishing touches on their production, ‘Goin’ Buggy’ which will be performed next week on Tuesday 30th November and Wednesday 1st December Tickets are still available for both nights. The students have been working very hard and can not wait to perform for a packed house!
Have a great week.

Further information
- Better Health Channel information about preventing mosquito-borne diseases
- A handy checklist for at home to help reduce mosquito breeding sites
- Department of Health safety advice for flood-affected areas in a range of languages.
STAYING SAFE FROM MOSQUITOES
After floods and heavy rainfall, mosquitoes can grow and spread in the pools of water left behind.
While the overall risk is low, some mosquitoes carry diseases that are spread through mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are more active at dusk and dawn, but some will also bite during the day.
The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid mosquito bites.
Families can protect against mosquito bites by:
- covering up as much as possible with long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
- applying insect repellent that contains picaridin or DEET on exposed skin when leaving home
- limiting outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are active.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

YEAR 5 ‘TALK MONEY’ INCURSION
Over the past two weeks the Year 5 students have participated in the ‘Talk Money’ incursion.
In both Workshops, we looked at money stories, which is the way we think, feel and act with money, and how we all have different money beliefs and how these different money beliefs can impact the decisions we make and how we spend our money.
We then looked at using the HEARD word in money conversations to help us have constructive money conversations:
H – Hear, not just talk
E – Express your wants and needs
A – Ask questions
R – Respect the other person
D – Disagree if needed (but do it respectfully)
We also looked at how we can use the Super Savings Strategy to set saving goals, establish saving strategies, and separate our savings and spending money to help us reach our saving goals.

SCIENCE – PREPS
In STEM Science, the Prep students are exploring objects that are made of observable properties. They are also identifying and recording what everyday things are made of. The students created a pair of ‘binoculars’ which they used to find and describe objects in their classroom. Through collaborating with a partner, they used their senses, to question, observe, describe and sort a variety of natural and made objects.
The students are developing their science skills through inquiry, prediction, observation, exploration, discussion and recording.
They are answering questions such as;
What can I see?
Is it natural or made?
Why is it made that way?
Why do we wear different things?
Well done, to all the Preps for working so hard during Science! I am so proud how far they have all come!

SCIENCE – YEAR 4
This term the Year 4’s had the opportunity to be involved in an innovated project ‘Mission to Mars’ which involves our students learning Critical and Design Thinking skills that includes: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test with hands-on activities.
OUR MISSION TO INVESTIGATE
Let’s imagine, what types of food they would be eating on Mars, based on what we know about Mars and how it is different from Earth?
The students have been exploring the process of empathising and collaborating their ideas to define the problem and coming up with solutions.
They brainstormed and researched different foods to create that are sustainable on Mars.
Focusing on certain questions:
What are the different foods that can be grown on Mars?
What recipes can we come up that can be sustainable for humans on Mars?
Explored and investigated different recipes and their ingredients, to see if they can be sustainable on Mars if not they were required to explore alternative ingredients that are sustainable and be grown on Mars.

LITERACY CORNER

YEAR 5 LITERACY CORNER
Throughout this term, the Year 5 students have been busily planning, drafting and publishing their Leadership Speeches, in an attempt to achieve a Captaincy for 2023. In class, we first studied the qualities of good leaders and thought deeply about which of these qualities each student most valued and felt they possessed. Students chose three traits they wanted to highlight, and wrote their speech based on these qualities.
In close partnership with their teacher, the students wrote and polished their paragraphs, before publishing and printing in order to rehearse in front of peers, families and the mirror!
Over two days the Year 4s joined us, to hear the speeches and participate in selecting the best candidates to represent their House.
We were blown away by the creativity, passion and commitment the students showed, not only in the writing process but also in the, somewhat terrifying task of presenting to a larger audience.
Well done to all the Year 5s!

The person you have all been waiting for has arrived. Ok maybe only a few of you have been waiting for me, or maybe none… anyway, I am Panagiotis and I would love to have you vote for me to be a leader in 2023. But I can’t just say I want you to vote for me as there are around 20 other candidates all worthy of their name being on that paper. But are they good leaders? In fact, what is a good leader? Well to put it simply, a leader is someone who is determined to succeed, resourceful, someone who represents the school brilliantly and someone who helps others stand up for themselves and use their voice. You probably heard all that and are confused so I am going to break it into 3 paragraphs…
Panagiotis, 5LG
“If you want the rainbow then you’re gonna have to put up with the rain.” This quote was written by Dolly Parton. This quote means that if you want success, you’re going to have to put up with the challenges that may stand in your way. For about half my life I have been doing the best I possibly can, at this amazing and massive school. Throughout this time, I have found the key to leadership is friendliness and a good reputation, as well as you must be courageous, calm and honest. Hi, my name is Finn, and I would love to be a captain for 2023.
Finn, 5NK
Is a leader someone who is smart… handsome… or funny definitely NOT. I believe I have what I takes to be a leader and I’m not that smart… I’m not handsome (far from it) … and I’m not extremely funny. But what do you think makes a good leader? (ask audience the question). I believe a good leader is someone who is creative, determined and, last but not least kindness. Hello Ladies, gentlemen and everyone else I’m Aiden and I’m running for a Captaincy position in 2023.
Aiden, 5KP
Persistence, determination and reliability. These are the three character strengths I personally believe make a good leader. Some people may disagree, and that’s completely fine because I believe different opinions are what make our world and society interesting. Hi, I’m Hannah, I’m in Gould, I would be honoured to be a captain at OSPS in 2023.
Hannah, 5WS

OSPS DISCO 2022
Saturday night fever hit OSPS last Friday!
The school disco finally returned to OSPS, and it was a huge success. It was great seeing the kids fill the hall dressed ready to dance. The lights were dimmed, glow products were turned on and the music was pumping. It was great watching the kids dance away enjoying the event.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the teachers that came on the night and let loose on the dance floor, especially Nikki Virtuoso and Michael Mietzcke who helped with supervising both discos.
The biggest thank you goes out to DJ Eykman who kept the kids entertained with the music, fun and games. It truly was a great night and we look forward to hosting again, bigger and better next year!
