STUDENT SHOWCASE

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
What a fun and exciting term it has been for our Year 2, 5 & 6s in STEM-Digital Technologies.
Our Year 2s have started the term by learning with Ozobot as well as some word processing basics through Microsoft PowerPoint. Ozobot is a unique robot that can not only follow lines, it can be coded through colour and block coding.
So far students have practised navigating the Ozobot through mazes and using the colour codes to direct it on the correct path.
Further to this, the year 2s have been learning about the key functions of Microsoft PowerPoint. From inserting and formatting pictures, shapes and text boxes, through to using animations and transitions, students have used their creativity to develop their own slideshows.
Next we look to combine the Ozobot and PowerPoint, as we guide students into creating their own colour coded maze.

In Year 5 and 6, we began the term by exploring the Scratch 3 block coding software. Students were introduced to some of the basics of the program and followed a tutorial to help them make their sprites move both through controls and automatically. The task for students was to redesign their own version of the infamous platform game ‘Flappy Bird’. From Hippos chasing cheesy puffs, through to dinosaurs eating tacos, the creativity and team work to make these games was fantastic!
Following this, our Year 5s linked some technologies with science to build a scaled model of the solar system in a Minecraft World. Students worked in groups to identify and use a workable scale ratio and apply it to the size of their planets in Minecraft. They then had to work out a separate scale ratio to further represent the relative distance each planet was from the sun. Students showed outstanding group work skills to define rolls and responsibilities, and worked feverishly to complete their builds including their giant 350 x 350 block representation of the sun.
Finally, after years of waiting, our Year 6s students were introduced to the 3D printers. They used a unique software called BlocksCAD which integrates block coding with a basic version of the CAD design software. Students learnt to use coordinates and the Cartsesian Plane, to position letters and shapes to create a 3D bug and a personalised key chain. Their objects were printed and students were able to take them home.
