PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Tomorrow afternoon at 5pm in the school hall, we will be holding a Community Forum to discuss the school’s performance, its future direction and to gather ideas and feedback from our school community. This forms part of our preparation for our School Review which will be held in Term 4. This will be an opportunity for our families to understand how well our school has performed over the past four years of our School Strategic Plan.

If you cannot attend the forum, there will be an online survey which we invite you to participate in to share your feedback. A Flexibuzz will be sent to notify you when this will be available to you.

The Year 6 children started their dress rehearsals this week in preparation for their production performances next week. Tickets can still be purchased at www.trybooking.com for all shows. We are hoping to see lots of our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 children at the 4pm matinee performance.
Everyone is very excited for these shows and the children cannot wait to perform for their families and friends. Please show your support and join in another fantastic OSPS event.

Next week there will be no whole school assembly on Tuesday, but there will be a full assembly on Friday at 1.40pm before the children will be dismissed at 2.30pm for the holidays.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Ron Cantlon
Principal

SUPERVISION AND PARKING

Parking

A reminder to parents and carers are NOT to use the Staff Car Park, or the disabled parks, regardless of the time of day. It is NOT to be used as a quick drop off or collection point.

This includes after Choir on a Wednesday

Please make sure you do your civic duty to follow the road laws and rules. This includes parking correctly in the signed areas, and completing 3 point turns in the middle in the intersection!

We also urge parents to please remember to be patient and polite when using the Oval Carpark, and be good role models for all the children witnessing their behaviour. With over 800 families, drop off and collection times will be busy and you will need to plan your time accordingly.

Please click here for further parking information oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au/about-us/#parking

Supervision

Yard duty before school commences at 8:45 am.

After school teachers are in the grounds until 3:45 pm. Students on school grounds outside these times will not be supervised (unless they attending a before or after school care program or supervised extracurricular activity).

Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not arrive early or stay late after school unless they are attending before or after school care, or a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. running club).

SCHOOL MATTERS

OSPS School Council Update – September 2019

Dear Parents,

The OSPS School Council met on Wednesday 21st August for our regularly scheduled meeting following the extraordinary meeting on August 7th to elect office bearers. With a meeting so close to the previous one we only have a short update for you this month from SC.

Office Bearers

Kate Liu was nominated and duly elected to continue in the role of Treasurer. Kate has been doing a terrific job in this role and we thank her for taking up the position once again.

Vacant Positions

With the decision to invite a representative of the Parent Group to fill one of the community roles on SC, the second community rep and the casual vacancy left by Kate Rawlinson’s resignation were discussed. With the limited number of meeting remaining in 2019, the decision was made by council not to fill Kate’s position at this stage. This position is up for election in 2020 and will be filled through that process.

As advised in the last update we are currently assessing the skill set of the SC members and will make a decision on the second community position at the next SC meeting in September.

Robotics Lab

We are very excited to see the Robotics Lab progressing well. There is still much to do including working through how the Lab will be utilised by the school and local community. A working group will be set up including Evert Eykman and Katreen Cook who were instrumental in developing the winning grant submission. Lindsay Guy will represent the SC in this group.

School Communication Channels

SC discussed the recent increase in inappropriate posts and comments on various parent-run Facebook pages. It is disappointing that parents expect teachers and their own children to act in a respectful manner yet fail to do so themselves when behind a keyboard.

Whilst the school and SC has been supportive of these pages as a useful tool for communication of school events and relevant matters, we remind parents these are not official channels for communication with the school. Staff and teachers will no longer be responding to comments on this page. All communication is to be directed to the school through the proper channels. If you wish to send a communication to SC then please use the email address schoolcouncil@oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au

That’s it for this month

The Preps and Year 1’s will soon be holding their annual Multicultural Day on Thursday 12th of September.

Students are asked to come to school dressed in the traditional clothing of
a country of their choice (think flag colours, cultural dress, “stereotypical” clothing) and to bring along a platter of finger food that the country is famous for.

There will be a parade in the hall at 9.15am. Parents are most welcome at attend!

We look forward to seeing a variety of outfits and feasting on yummy foods!

STUDENT SHOWCASE

Prep Father’s Day

On Friday the 30th of August the Preps celebrated Father’s Day with a fun-filled afternoon in our classrooms.

With laughter and paper planes in the air, the afternoon flew by. From ‘shaving’ Dad’s face to decorating donuts, we all had a ball with our dads and special people.

A big thank you to all the ads and special people who joined us, embracing each activity with a smile on their face.

We hope the OSPS community had a memorable and enjoyable Father’s Day with families.
