PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Yesterday the whole school was involved in a puppet show performed by the Camp Quality crew. Their vivacious and loveable puppets, Kylie, Dean and Melissa engaged the children in a narrative to dispel myths and misconceptions that are commonly associated with cancer. They covered areas such as why someone may look a little different due to side effects of the treatment, to be supportive of anyone who is living with cancer, that cancer isn’t contagious, so it’s ok to play and to be positive. The children responded so well and were totally engaged to their powerful message.

Many children from years 2-6 participated in the UNSW Science test yesterday. Over the next couple of weeks there will be other tests in Spelling, Writing, English and Mathematics. There is more information in this newsletter.

Last Friday, the OSPS Parent Group held another very successful Father’s Day Breakfast. Over 500 dads and grandads came to school with their children and grandkids to indulge in a breakfast of egg and bacon rolls, croissants and ‘real’ coffee. A huge thank you to the parent group for organising such a wonderful community event.

This week the Book Fair is on in the library. The children can buy books between 3.30pm and 4.00pm each afternoon until Thursday. There are many books to choose from as well as novelty items, like pencils, pens and posters. This is a very popular event which the children love. See you there!

Finally keep your eye out next Monday during the Channel 10 news bulletin. Our Prep children have been invited to be part of the weather cross which will take place at school. They are very excited to be on TV.

Have a wonderful week.

Principal

SCHOOL REVIEW

In preparation for our School Review in Term 4, and part of the Pre-review Self-evaluation, it is vital that all members of our school community are provided with the opportunity to contribute to a shared understanding of how well the school has performed over the life of the School Strategic Plan.

The school will be holding a Community Forum to discuss the school’s performance, its future directions and gather ideas and feedback form our school community. We invite our school community to participate in the Community Forum on Wednesday September 11 at 5.00pm in the school hall.

For those members of our school community that are unable to attend, we invite you to participate in an in online survey to share your ideas and feedback. This will be sent to parents prior to the forum.

SUPERVISION AND PARKING

Parking

A reminder to parents and carers are NOT to use the Staff Car Park, or the disabled parks, regardless of the time of day. It is NOT to be used as a quick drop off or collection point.

This includes after Choir on a Wednesday

Please make sure you do your civic duty to follow the road laws and rules. This includes parking correctly in the signed areas, and completing 3 point turns in the middle in the intersection!

We also urge parents to please remember to be patient and polite when using the Oval Carpark, and be good role models for all the children witnessing their behaviour. With over 800 families, drop off and collection times will be busy and you will need to plan your time accordingly.

Please click here for further parking information oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au/about-us/#parking

Supervision

Yard duty before school commences at 8:45 am.

After school teachers are in the grounds until 3:45 pm. Students on school grounds outside these times will not be supervised (unless they attending a before or after school care program or supervised extracurricular activity).

Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not arrive early or stay late after school unless they are attending before or after school care, or a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. running club).

Multicultural Day

The Preps and Year 1’s will soon be holding their annual Multicultural Day on Thursday 12th of September.

Students are asked to come to school dressed in the traditional clothing of
a country of their choice (think flag colours, cultural dress, “stereotypical” clothing) and to bring along a platter of finger food that the country is famous for.

There will be a parade in the hall at 9.15am. Parents are most welcome at attend!

We look forward to seeing a variety of outfits and feasting on yummy foods!

NED

On Monday the 12th of August we had a very special guest visit Oakleigh South Primary School all the way from California! His name is NED and, along with his best friend Keith, NED taught us some valuable lessons about growth mindset and having a ‘can do’ attitude.  The letters in NED’s name stand for Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best.

Through storytelling, humour and some unbelievable yo-yo tricks we learnt that when facing obstacles in life positivity, problem solving and perseverance can help us get through challenges and grow our brains.

Thanks NED and Keith for a wonderful show and for spreading such an important message.

Trivia Night

Once again the annual Year 6 Trivia Night was a huge success with over 100 students in attendance. The children put their brains to the test with a jam packed audio visual extravaganza and side splitting games such as beat the teacher, air guitar, the Fortnite dance-off and hula hoop competition.

Congratulations to ‘Dem Boys’ for becoming the 2019 trivia winners. Celebrations continued into the night at the post trivia disco where students and teachers danced the night away to some awesome tunes. Thank you to the wonderful committee of teachers and parents who made this a night our Year 6’s will never forget.
