PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The year 6 students are in full swing with their production practises of Moana Jnr at the moment. Before you know it, they will be performing in front of their family and friends at the end of the term. There will be four performances, Monday 12th September, Wednesday 14th September and Thursday 15th September all at 7pm. There will be a special matinee show at 4pm on Tuesday 13th September. Ticketing details will be provided soon. Please save the dates for these shows, we can’t wait to showcase our wonderful year 6 students in a full production this year!
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Regional Championships for RoboCup at St. Michael’s Grammar. We had 9 teams competing with two of our teams finishing second and third. This was a fantastic result given this was only our second time entering the event. I would like to congratulate the students who represented our school so well and to Mr Eykman and the teachers who have given their time during lunchtimes and on Saturday to support our students in this fantastic event. A detailed report is in this newsletter.
On Monday we had visitors from the DET North-Eastern Victoria Region, Principals and Japanese Language teachers from South Oakleigh College and Huntingdale Primary School to participate in ‘Learning Walks’ to observe high quality teaching and learning of the Japanese language at Oakleigh South PS as part of the Oakleigh Education Plan (OEP). The purpose of the “Learning Walks’ was to observe and stimulate discussion about high quality teaching and learning in Japanese to strengthened Japanese pathways for students, with a coherent approach to Japanese teaching and learning across the Learning Precinct.
I hope you have a great week

SCHOOL MATTERS

NATALIE HUTCHINS MP VISITS OSPS
State Education Minister Natalie Hutchins MP visited OSPS recently to have a tour of our school and view the commencement of the new $9.5m redevelopment project. She loved wearing our OSPS scarf on her tour and visiting classrooms and chatting to lots of staff and students.
Meng Heang Tak MP was also present, as was the architect, building contractor and representatives from the VSBA (Victorian School Building Authority).
Our school captains and vice captains spoke proudly about the programs and opportunities OSPS students receive at our school.
We can’t wait to see the progress during the year 6 wing redevelopment and new Village kitchen. Following that will be the redevelopment of the administration wing.

ILLNESS
It can be difficult for families to know when their child is sick enough to need to stay home from school. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice.
Families can experience problems when trying to take time off to care for an ill child at home. However, it is important that parents focus not only on the wellbeing of their own child, but also upon the wellbeing of other children and the staff. If you need to administer Panadol/Nurofen before school, then your child should not be at school.
If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, they must be completely well for 24 hours before returning to school.

RECYCLING BREAD BAGS
Did you know?
In Australia, only 18% of plastic packaging is recycled.
Our School is participating in the Wonder Recycling Rewards program.
Send along to your child’s teacher EMPTY bread bags, so they can be recycled and earn the school some sports equipment.
We need to collect 25kg of empty bread bags (any brand of bread bags), up until 9th September.
Start collecting now!

STUDENT SHOWCASE

ST JOHN FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM
This week the grade 2 Students attended a First Aid Incursion.
Students learnt about what to do if they found someone unconscious and the important steps to take.
They learnt D for danger, R for response, S for send for help. The year twos are now able to call 000 and understand the importance of calling triple 0.
They had a lot of fun and got to play bingo, looking for key words such as danger, send for help, ambulance, listen, smell and squeeze.
What a fantastic incursion!
TYPING CLUB PROGRAM
This term Grade 2 has been trying out a brand learning program during our computer sessions. The program is called Typing Club and it has been included in our weekly sessions to help us with touch typing. Here’s what some students from 2LW had to say about our new addition;
“I think Typing Club is great for kids because it teaches us how to type easily and it contains lots of games that are very fun” says Elly. “It also teaches you how to put your hands correctly and the posture that keeps you healthy.”
Katie loves Typing Club too. “I like Typing Club because it helps me to type fast and I don’t need to look at the keyboard, spending hours trying to find the letters. These skills make it easier to type a letter, an email or homework, otherwise people might think that you’re just taking forever to write and type.”

OAKLEIGH SOUTH PS FINISH 2nd and 3rd AT ROBOCUP REGIONAL EVENT
On Saturday the 13th of August, our amazing RoboClub students competed at St Michael’s Grammar in the Regional Championships for RoboCup. Entering the Riley Rover, the event involved students creating robots that compete by following a winding line on a series of tiles to a designated rescue area. On the way the robot would encounter a ramp, an oil spill and would be required to push out a victim from the final tile.
All teams successfully completed a course with 2 teams reaching the finals. We were pipped by a very small margin to have Team Solo consisting of Andrew Macrae, Alexander Zhang and Ajay Mehta finish second, and Team Mandolorian with Kenneth Huang and Andrew Mindakis finishing in third. This was a fantastic result given this was only our second time entering the event. A huge congratulations to all of the other 7 OSPS teams that entered, for the effort and dedication shown to their robot and the event. You all did our school proud!
A big thanks also goes to Mr Leon Davey, Mr Enis Wintersea, Ms Amy Philipsen and Mr Nick Mason Parker for giving up their lunchtimes and Saturday to support the students. Thank you also goes to the parents for their support of all of the children on the day.
Now, on to the next robotics challenge for our RoboCup teams to take on!

PERFORMING ARTS AT OSPS
VSSS Dance
Year 5 students participating in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular in mass dance had their final rehearsal before their dress rehearsals and shows at John Cain Arena in September.
The students travelled to Maroondah Nets where they completed their very first costume run of the show.
It was a very busy day and there was plenty of excitement, sequins and even a surprise flash mob from the teachers!
All of the students did an incredible job dancing with enthusiasm and energy throughout the day.
VSSS Choir
Year 5 students have this week been to their second rehearsal at the Melbourne Town Hall.
It was great to see some of the other musicians, singers and dancers from the upcoming show. Only a few more weeks until the 2 dress rehearsals and the 2 big shows.
Tickets to the 2022 Victorian State Schools Spectacular are now on sale and can be purchased through Ticketek www.ticketek.com.au/spectacular.
There are two performances on Saturday the 10th of September at 1.00pm & 6.30pm.
Oakleigh South students will be performing in both shows.

MOANA JNR
We are now into our final 4 weeks of rehearsals for our Year 6 production, Moana Jnr. Both casts are now running the show in sequence and have been amazing learning their lines, songs and choreography over the last term. They can’t wait to perform to everyone during the last week of term.
X FACTORY
Level 4 students performed their production X Factory in week 3. They accepted and rose to the challenge for these performances with great success. It was certainly a great learning and performance developing experience for all students.
JUNIOR PERFORMING ARTS
This Term in Junior Performing Arts the PREPS have been continuing to learn about the music concepts whilst singing, dancing, and playing instruments. They have been doing some drama in class. The GRADE ONES have been learning about other cultures and music from around the world. They have been learning a variety of traditional folk dances.
The LEVEL TWO classes have been working on their Year Two Production.
The LEVEL THREE classes have been learning the Ukulele. They have been learning chords and strumming patterns.

LITERACY CORNER

YEAR 2 WRITING
Do you know what a sizzling start is? Well, let us show you! This term, the Year 2s have been looking at sizzling starts during their persuasive writing unit. They have been using dialogue and rhetorical questions to capture the audiences’ attention and convince them of their opinion. Read some of our amazing examples and see if you are convinced with their persuasive reasons of why lunchtime should/should not be extended!
“Nooooo!” I cried. I need more time to eat my lunch. I have a test and my brain is not refreshed yet! What should I do? I will fail this test! I can’t believe that silly old bell did that to me, I’m so mad. I have no time to study either! That is why I am certain that lunchtime should be extended.
Jiayi 2TM
“I’m super happy that lunch is 50 minutes but I wish we could have more time to work,” my best friend explained to me. 10 minutes is enough time to eat and you can play a dozen games in 50 minutes! I am going to convince you with my 3 reasons for why lunchtime should not be extended.
Trisha 2LW
“Ugh!” I said. I only took one bite of my lunch and the boring old music came on. I only got one minute outside. Lunchtime is too short because you do not have much time to hang out with your friends, not enough time to eat and not sufficient time to play with multiple friends. Let me tell you why it is too short!

RESILIENCE PROJECT

RESILIENCE PROJECT
This Term, the Year 2 students have continued to develop their emotional literacy.
They have been learning different ways to react to problems, and were able to identify bad, good and bounce back reactions in real life scenarios.
In addition, the Year 2 students identified and discussed the importance of teamwork by participating in engaging and fun team games.
YEAR 2 GEM
G – “I am grateful for all of my friends and my teachers because they are super nice to me!” (Chloe)
E – “I show empathy when I help my friends at lunchtime, sometimes they fall over!” (Nina)
M – “I like to practice being calm by taking deep breaths when I am stressed.” (Safaa)

PARENT GROUP

COFFEE DAY
Last Thursday, Parent Group spent the morning training members of their committee on how to use the coffee machine in the hall kitchen.
For this training to be successful, we needed to have someone to make coffee and hot chocolates for, so the teaching and admin staff seemed like the logical choice.
The teachers were very grateful to receive their hot drinks and Parent Group were happy to have completed a successful training session.
If any parents would like to be included in the next training session or are familiar with using coffee machines and can assist with future events, please feel free to email Parent Group on osparentgroup67@gmail.com

MUFFIN DAY
Last week, Parent Group organized a successful muffin day for students.
The feedback received was very positive; with many comments on how huge they were and how delicious. It was nice to see the smiles on the kids faces as they were delivered to the classrooms.
Parent Group looks forward to hosting more similar events this year.
If anyone has any fundraising suggestions, they’d like to share please feel free to contact Parent Group to discuss them.
