PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Student Eyecare started at school last week. The response to this free eye assessment has been overwhelming with over 650 responses received. Student Eyecare will work through each assessment, so it may take a little longer than first thought to have your child’s eyes tested. They will be working into term 4 to get all the tests done.
Tomorrow, we welcome to school the Minister for Education, Natalie Hutchins, to view the building site and tour the school. We will have a detailed report of her visit in next week’s newsletter.
At present, there are a high volume of students that are coming to school unwell. If your child is showing any signs of being unwell, please do not send them to school. As we know, Covid-19, flu, RSV, colds, and other viruses are rife amongst all communities at the moment. Please keep RAT testing twice a week to keep us all safe. Thank you.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
Ron
Principal

SCHOOL MATTERS

PARKING – OAKLEIGH SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
It has come to our attention that some parents are parking across driveways and footpaths blocking children, families and prams that need to access the footpath.
If everyone could please be mindful to NOT block driveways and paths that would be much appreciated.
Let’s all work together to help keep our children and families safe at OSPS.

ILLNESS
It can be difficult for families to know when their child is sick enough to need to stay home from school. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice.
Families can experience problems when trying to take time off to care for an ill child at home. However, it is important that parents focus not only on the wellbeing of their own child, but also upon the wellbeing of other children and the staff. If you need to administer Panadol/Nurofen before school, then your child should not be at school.
If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, they must be completely well for 24 hours before returning to school.

COVID-19 UPDATE FACE MASKS IN SCHOOLS
It is strongly recommended by the Victorian Department of Health that face masks are worn in indoor settings, with face masks mandatory for those aged 8 and over who are household contacts and attending school. This is because the wearing of masks is effective in reducing the transmission of COVID-19.
What does this mean in practice for schools?
It is the department’s expectation that, through to the end of winter, students aged 8 and over and staff will wear masks when in class, except where removing a mask is necessary for clear communication or when a particular activity requires the removal of a mask.
Masks are not required to be worn outdoors but can be worn when physical distancing is not possible. This expectation should not constrain student participation in the full range of school activities, including music, sport and performances.
Wearing masks is a simple step we can all take this winter to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and ensure our schools are as safe as possible.
A short letter is available below, signed by each of the 3 school sectors which explains the consistent expectation across all schools in Victoria this winter. You can access this by clicking on the link below.

CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK – Year 5
The Year 5s have spent the last few weeks celebrating NAIDOC week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.
It is now a week that is celebrated each year in the first week of July. We celebrate NAIDOC week so we can show our respect to the Indigenous people whose land we are gathered on.
We have learnt about the history of NAIDOC week and more about our Indigenous culture. Mark, our Koorie Education Support Officer, came in to speak to the Year 5s about this very important week.
He taught us lots of facts about Indigenous culture and how NAIDOC week was formed.
He also told us a very interesting and special fact about our school! OSPS sits on two traditional Aboriginal lands – Wurundjeri and Bunurong lands.
The Year 5 building is on Bunurong land while the Preps and Year 1s are on Wurundjeri land.
The Year 5s did lots of different activities in our classrooms like creating a new flag using parts of our 3 flags, research about significant Australian Indigenous people who have made contributions to our community and read lots of amazing picture story books about our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

GEM AT OAKLEIGH SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Students in Years 4-6 will have the opportunity to explore GEM during lunchtimes. Mindfulness is one of the four pillars of GEM, Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy.
Mindfulness is the ability to be present in the moment and our ability to remain calm. We practice this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.
Students are able to attend GEM Club each Friday at 1pm to practise Mindfulness. There will be activities supplied by Ms Paroukas, however, students are also able to bring in their own to school to use in GEM Club.
With Gratitude.
