PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As our lockdown continues into the second week, I hope that everyone is well and coping with our current situation.

Today the children have been involved in Wellbeing Wednesday activities through their Google Classroom with the next class Zoom meeting being scheduled for Thursday. Thank you to everyone, both teachers and parents who are supporting their children during this remote learning time.

I like to remind you that in this newsletter further down, there is the Parent Corner. This gives you a snapshot of the online learning programs the children can use during remote learning and some wellbeing tips for the parents. If there is anything you need clarified about your child’s schoolwork, please contact your classroom teacher via email.

Parent Teacher meeting bookings opened up on Monday and have been very well received. At this stage they will still be face to face unless the decision is made to go to Zoom meetings. I will inform you via Operoo of any changes that may have to be made.

I hope everyone is safe and well.

Ron

Enrolments for Prep 2022 are now open and places are filling fast.

SMILE SQUAD

Please note that consent forms will be sent home once the children return to school.

Smile Squad is on the way to our school!

All children deserve a healthy smile and the Smile Squad are coming to Oakleigh South Primary School to help make sure this happens.

Smile Squad is a $321.9 million Victorian Government program that provides free dental care to all Victorian public primary and secondary school students.

The friendly Smile Squad dental team will visit Oakleigh South Primary School soon to conduct a free annual dental health examination for every student and provide free follow up treatment as needed.

What do parents need to do?

We just need you to provide consent once the forms are sent home with your child.

The Smile Squad team will then check your child’s teeth and mouth and show them how to keep their teeth healthy and strong. They will also provide any preventive services you have consented for. If your child needs more treatment, the Smile Squad will contact you.

Who is Smile Squad?

The bright orange Smile Squad vans are staffed by experienced oral health therapists, dental therapists, dental assistants and dentists. They all have lots of experience treating children and a passion for improving their oral health – for life.

Learn more about the Smile Squad by visiting www.smilesquad.vic.gov.au or contact the team at smilesquad@dhsv.org.au

YEAR 5 SHOWCASE

YEAR 5’s AT SOSC

Our Year 5 Students get the opportunity each year to visit South Oakleigh Secondary College to experience different STEAM activities/subjects that are on offer.  Each Monday afternoon we all walk down to the secondary college where we are greeted by their friendly teachers and student leaders; many of whom are ex Oakleigh South PS students.

There are 5 rotations to experience including Science lab, TV Studio, Fitness Studio, Music and Small Lab. So far our Year 5’s have participated in 2 rotations and the feedback has been very positive and exciting. All students have embraced the hands on nature of the activities where they have had experiences such as operating a TV camera, boxing, playing the drums and keyboard, dissecting a bulls eye and exploring the SMALlab (the only one of its type in the southern hemisphere!). It’s an interactive workspace that combines ultra-precise motion capture technology with an immersive floor projection. Students learn as they move about the room. WOW!

Year 5’s can’t wait to get back onsite to explore more of secondary college life and get a further taste of the opportunities available to them as they move forward with their education in a couple of years. We thank SOSC for giving us the opportunity to visit and explore.

PARENT CORNER

REMOTE LEARNING

As a result of the Victorian Government’s move to Remote Learning students working onsite and at home are required to access their Google classroom.

From Monday the 7th of June 2021, all tasks and activities will be available through Google Classroom. Here students will be able to access both online and hands-on content on a daily basis. Not all content will require technology which will allow you to be flexible in planning your child or children’s day.

Teachers have tried to make the activities simple and easy to understand for students, keeping in mind that older aged children may be able to be more independent and giving consideration to younger aged children who may need more content to demonstrate the task or parent support.

Please see the Operoo sent to parents on Thursday 3rd June titled – ‘Google Classroom and What to Expect’.

Families should also take advantage of the various school learning programs on offer.

They include:

Literacy
Reading Eggspress
myON
Sunshine Books

Numeracy
Essential Assessments
Mathletics

Wellbeing
Student Wellbeing Hub
Life Skills GO

ONLINE ZOOM SESSIONS

This week your child will have two online Zoom sessions with their classroom teacher to discuss Google classroom activities, check in on well-being and answer any questions they may have. Should the Government extend lockdown 4.0 a new Zoom schedule will be communicated with added sessions to support students with their well-being and learning.
