This week I received a report from Reading Eggs showing the school’s participation and achievements in the program from January to the end of November. What an impressive set of numbers on that report! I have included the full report in the newsletter for you to see. It really shows me what a worthwhile program this is for children of all ages. While it is accessed primarily by our junior students, it was used across the whole school this year, especially during remote learning.
I urge you to encourage your children to keep accessing this extremely valuable program during the holidays to help maintain their reading and comprehension levels. It is proven to us that children do regress in their reading capabilities if they don’t practise over extended breaks, so with Reading Eggs and regular reading of books your children will keep on top of their reading.
Yesterday most grades were involved in the school’s transition morning. The children went to their 2021 year level and talked about all the exciting things that happen in that level. The Year 2 students will be involved in their transition morning this Friday. Our Year 6 students were also involved in their secondary school’s orientation program.
Congratulations to Siddarth Year 6, Lisa Year 6, Panagiotis Year 3 and Benjamin Year 2 who have been awarded ICAS medals, the highest recognition on achievement in the ICAS assessments, see further down for more information.
As we approach the last week of our 2020 school year, the year seems like a blur. However, I am reminded that although it has been a most difficult year for everyone, the resilience of our students, staff and parents has been incredible. A true reflection of our school motto… ‘Together We Achieve!’
Have a great week!

YEAR 6 GOVERNMENT UNIT
What a whirlwind this term has been for our year 6 students! During this term, the students were introduced to a new and exciting unit of work. Together, they have learnt about the key values of Australia’s democratic system of government and the key components of this government. They now have a strong understanding of the importance of the electoral process, the roles of different people in Australia’s legal system and the rights we have as Australian citizens.
The best way to really understand these important topics is to have elections ourselves, so we did! Each class split into small groups and created their own political parties. They selected a candidate to represent them during the election. These parties created different policies for our local area, our state and for our school. They also promoted their parties’ values and candidates, by designing posters, brochures and PowerPoint presentations. All the Year 6 students were engaged and loved the experience. Congratulations to the successful candidates, Nithil – State of Wells Premier, Sapphire – State of Davey Premier, Freya – State of Marsden Premier, William – State of Roth Premier and Jazmyn – State of Zielin Premier.
YEAR 6 ALADDIN SHOWCASE & COSTUME THANKS
This year’s Year 6 production was like no other … but the show did go on (in a very different format from usual).
Lights, camera action! Well, there definitely was all of that!!
The Year 6’s danced spectacularly to the song “A Friend Like Me” from their show ‘Aladdin Junior’. This was filmed, so they could have a memento of their performance in 2020. (They weren’t allowed to sing due to COVID 19 restrictions). The children were also filmed in front of a green screen, taking a memorable magic carpet ride to the song “A Whole New World”.
A huge thank you to Lemone Meyer and Elaine Wilkinson (Performing Arts teachers) for changing the parameters so many times this year, to enable the Year 6’s to have this opportunity.
Thanks also to the ‘Film Crew’ consisting of Nigel Hooley, Evert Eykman, James Melbourne and Andy Yeung who spent their time creating a professional recording set-up.
To the children of Year 6 … congratulations for going with the flow, and being grateful for whatever we were able to provide for you! You did OSPS proud!
We’d like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to all the parents who volunteered with the production this year, we were only able to utilise a small group of parents and staff due to the downscaled event and COVID restrictions.
Thanks to Kate Rawlinson, Liz Taylor, Velli Stavrou, Shiri Drabkin, Beki Sheehan-Warren, MandI Schruhm, Sally Kailas, Julie Roppola, Karina Makse-Hill, Yuliana Tjokroamidjojo, Janet Wilkin, Penelope Cato, Elaine Wilkinson and Lemone Meyer for all your help with the costumes.
