PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Congratulations to all the Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed NAPLAN catch ups last week. It was terrific for the Department to allow an extension of a week on NAPLAN catch ups, to allow those students who were absent with illness or COVID-19 to return to school to undertake them. We continued our very high participation rate, well above the state average, which makes this data so valuable to enhance our planning into the future.

Some exciting developments and progress with the car park. The Victorian School Building Authority and Monash Council are progressing with an agreed concept plan through detailed design and cost estimates. We hope to have further news for the school community once that project is confirmed. Huge thanks to Nadia Beauchamp and Rico Virtuoso who have pushed for this action for many months.

The footings and support structures have been installed for the shade sails between the year 3 portables and the hall and outside the Robotics room. This project is due to be completed within the next fortnight. The shade sails will add terrific outdoor learning spaces to our school grounds.

The 2 portables with 4 classrooms that were re-located from the old Village area along the oval between the art room and existing year 3 portables are soon to be signed off. Four year 3 classes will be moving into them creating 6 classrooms in a row of year 3’s closest to the new Village area. 2 year 4 classes will move into the 2 portables closest to the front of the hall.

The tender process for the new building refurbishment project is imminently due for sign off. This is the culmination of many hundreds of hours of work the school has poured into the project already. We are pleased to release the first concept design images below.

Have a great week,

Ron

All places for Prep 2023 will be confirmed by 26th August, 2022, as per the new timeline.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, enrolments will only be accepted in digital form.

Enrolment forms are available on the website http://oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au/enrolments/

SPARE CLOTHING

With the current wet weather, it is advised that children have a spare set of clothes, including socks in their bag.

Reminder to parents that if your child has been provided with spare clothes from sick bay  – please wash and return to school ASAP.

If we do not have spare clothing you will be contacted to bring items and for you to change your child.

ILLNESS

It can be difficult for families to know when their child is sick enough to need to stay home from school. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice.

Families can experience problems when trying to take time off to care for an ill child at home. However, it is important that parents focus not only on the wellbeing of their own child, but also upon the wellbeing of other children and the staff. If you need to administer Panadol/Nurofen before school, then your child should not be at school.

If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, they must be completely well for 24 hours before returning to school.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

The Victorian Government offer a Sports, Camps and Excursions Fund for families who hold a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A special consideration category also exists.

A payment of $125 for eligible primary school students and $225 for eligible secondary school students will be paid directly to the school to be used toward camps, sports and excursion costs for the student’s benefit.

CSEF payments to schools will commence from 1 March onwards. Schools are able to continue processing applications until the end of Term 2.

FUSE CUP @ OSPS

This term, Year 3-6 students have been participating in the FUSE Cup at an intra-school level. The Federation of United Schools Esports (FUSE) Cup is an international network of schools connected in providing young students with an opportunity to participate in a safe, supportive and structured national esports competition while developing positive and balanced gaming behaviours and digital wellbeing. The overarching values include Integrity, Strength (resilience), Inclusion and Teamwork.

The FUSE Cup provides school students with a face to face, safe, competitive and challenging esports opportunity while also promoting concepts such as Digital Wellbeing, Inclusion and Social Values. Children gain insight on being part of a team and learning how to contribute towards a common goal.

This term, students have been participating in the Just Dance competition, and the winners of each heat will compete in the Grand Final on the last day of Term 2.

Next term, students will have the chance to join the Mario Kart competition. Our goal is to compete with other schools in 2023.

Well done and good luck to all the children involved!
