PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

This week the teachers are involved in Planning Week. The day is used for planning, moderating, assessing and preparing in a team environment, some teams go to other schools to observe programs and teaching practices for their own professional development.

The Year 5’s have commenced a 5 week Science Program at South Oakleigh Secondary College. This program includes activities and experiments in line with the Year 5 unit of the Human Body. They will be exploring how body parts work; health, fitness and wellbeing in relation to how their body works and functions.

Last week the Preps enjoyed their Mini Beast Incursion, and yesterday “The Village” was a buzz when the students were able to view an active bee hive and learn about the important role bees play in nature.

Have a good week everyone.

Principal

Enrolments

Places for Prep 2020 are filling fast and we have an incredible number of applications.

If you have a child starting in 2020, please complete and return Prep Enrolment forms with the supporting documents as soon as possible.

If you know of other new families thinking of applying, please encourage them to submit their forms as well.

For more information about enrolments, please visit our school website    http://oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au/enrolments/

Lost Property

There is an incredible amount of lost property outside the Library! Please check there for any lost items.

As the weather turns much colder, and more layers are being worn to school, please make sure you check that all your child’s items are clearly named, especially if you have second hand clothing.

If you are in need of replacement jumpers and jackets – please visit the Second Hand Shop – open on Wednesday and Friday mornings, or PSW in Mills St, Cheltenham, and do not take items that do not belong to your child from Lost Property.

Illness

It can be difficult for families to know when their child is sick enough to need to stay home from school. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice.

Clearly we want children to be resilient and learn to put up with minor health matters, however it is important that students do not return to school before they are completely over illness. Apart from the fact that our facilities are limited, it is problematic if children return to school too soon and infect others.

Families can experience problems when trying to take time off to care for an ill child at home. However, it is important that parents focus not only on the wellbeing of their own child, but also upon the wellbeing of other children and the staff. If you have to administer Panadol / Nurofen before school – then your child isn’t school ready.

Antibiotics that are to be administered three times per day can be done at home. The first dose can be administered between 7am – 8.30am, the following dose can be administered between 3.45 – 4.30pm. Then the last dose can be given at 8pm or before bed.

If your child has a temperature, has vomited or had diarrhoea, they must be completely well for 24 hours before returning to school.

Car Parking

Parents are NOT to use the Staff Car Park, or the disabled parks, regardless of the time of day. It is NOT to be used as a quick drop off or collection point.

This includes after Choir on a Wednesday

Please make sure you do your civic duty to follow the road laws and rules. This includes parking correctly in the signed areas, and completing 3 point turns in the middle in the intersection!

We also urge parents to please remember to be patient and polite when using the Oval Carpark, and be good role models for all the children witnessing their behaviour. With over 800 families, drop off and collection times will be busy and you will need to plan your time accordingly.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

Year 6

During this term we learnt about the ANZAC campaign in Gallipoli. We learnt that approximately 500,000 casualties occurred during that campaign. We also watched the movie Gallipoli. Some people cried at the end of the movie but we learnt that where there is war there is death and sorrow.

Every term the Year 6 student gets a project. This term we got a project on any country of their liking. There was three parts to the project: A website, brochure and a 3D model. At school the teachers taught us how to code our website on code.org. The brochure and the 3D model we do at home.

We also have a new activity in our classroom called classroom economy. It teaches us about how to handle money and make it last a while so then you don’t go broke when you are older.

Groups

In writing groups this term we learnt the structure of persuasive texts. For the big write this term we wrote about whether social media is good or bad. For maths groups we learnt about ratios and rates.
In class the Year 6’s learnt about gender stereotypes and how they affect children’s brains.

Fete

The fete this year was amazing. There was a new ride called the cliff-hanger. You were basically in a hang glider that was attached to a spinning wheel that was on an angle. In other words it was a really fun ride.
The stalls were great too. There were fun stalls and food stalls that had great food!
Overall it was a great fete.
